1st John (part 10)

1ST JOHN (PART 10) – WHEN DOES OUR SIN LEAD TO SEPARATION FROM GOD?

 (PASTOR LEE JACKSON)

I)     INTRODUCTION –. HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW FAR CAN I GO?  HOW MUCH SIN WILL GOD TOLERATE BEFORE GOD MIGHT SERVER MY RELATIONSHIP WITH HIMSELF, BEFORE I WOULD LOSE MY SALVATION AND GOD’S GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE, BEFORE I WOULD AGAIN BECOME SPIRITUALLY DEAD, AS IF I HAD NEVER COME TO KNOW CHRIST?   IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE – SOME SAY “NO” BUT I BELIEVE THE SCRIPTURES SAY YES, THIS CAN HAPPEN.  TODAY’S LESSON DOES NOT ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS THAT MAY ARISE BUT I BELIEVE IT SPEAKS TO THIS SUBJECT.

II)     TEXT: 1JOHN 5:16 – 21 (KJV).

III)   PRAYING FOR A CHRISTIAN BROTHER / SISTER THAT HAVE FALLEN INTO SIN (16 – 17)

A)   IF WE PRAY FOR A BROTHER / SISTER WHO HAVE FALLEN INTO SIN THAT DOES NOT LEAD TO DEATH, GOD WILL GIVE THEM LIFE.

B)   PICTURE A BATTLE FIELD MEDIC THAT IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE IS TRYING TO ATTEND TO THE WOUNDED AND DYING.

C)   HE GOES FROM ONE TO ANOTHER TRYING TO ASCERTAIN THE CONDITION OF THE WOUNDED.   IF HE FINDS ONE THAT IS DEAD OR MORTALLY WOUNDED, HE WILL GO ON TO THE NEXT ONE THAT HAS A CHANCE OF LIVING.

D)   HIS PRIORITY IS TO TREAT THOSE THAT HAVE A CHANCE OF LIVING AND TO ADMINISTER LIFE GIVING TREATMENT TO THEM.

IV)  THERE IS A SIN THAT LEADS TO SPIRITUAL DEATH

A)   IT APPEARS THAT, WE ARE RELIEVED TO THE BURDEN OF PRAYING FOR THE BROTHER OR SISTER THAT HAS COMMITTED THE SIN(S) THAT LEAD TO SPIRITUAL DEATH.

B)   THE QUESTION IS WHAT DISTINGUISHES THIS PERSON OR THEIR SIN FROM ANOTHER?

C)   IF IT IS CERTAIN SINS THAT DETERMINE THIS CONDITION, WHY WOULD JOHN NOT GIVE US A LIST OF THESE SINS HERE?

D)   JESUS TALKS ABOUT THE UNPARDONABLE SIN IN THE CONTEXT OF ATTRIBUTING A MIRACLE TO SATAN THAT GOD PERFORMED.  Mat 12:31  Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

E)   THIS IS WHERE WE NEED DISCERNMENT.  I BELIEVE IT IS NOT SO MUCH THE SIN BUT THE CONDITION OF THE HEART.  IF THEY HAVE NO REMORSE OR EVEN A NEED TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR THEIR SIN THEN THEY ARE SPIRITUALLY DEAD OR NEAR DEAD.  (See Donald Stamps notes on this verse)

F)    PAUL GIVES SOME GUIDELINES IN 1COR. 5:1-11, CONTRAST WITH 2COR. 2:4-11

V)   IT IS ABNORMAL TO SIN AFTER WE HAVE COME TO KNOW CHRIST (18-19)

A)   EVEN STRONGER WE ARE NOT TO SIN AFTER WE HAVE COME TO KNOW CHRIST, BUT THE TRUTH IS CHRISTIANS DO SIN.

B)    WHEN WE SIN, WE SHOULD CONFESS OUR SINS AND AS GOD’S FORGIVENESS AND HIS HELP TO KEEP US FROM SINNING AGAIN.(1JN 1:9, 1JN 3:2-6, ROM 6:1)

C)   BUT WHAT DOES VS 18 MEAN: “WHOEVER IS BORN OF GOD KEEPS HIMSELF (GUARDS HIMSELF?) AND THAT THE WICKED ONE TOUCHETH HIM NOT”

D)   WE KNOW THAT GOD HAD PLACED A HEDGE AROUND JOB AND SATAN HAD TO ASK GOD’S PERMISSION TO TOUCH JOB’S FAMILY, BELONGINGS OR HIS BODY. (JOB 1:6-12 & 2:1-10).

E)   SIMILARLY, SATAN CAME TO JESUS TO ASK PERMISSION TO “SIFT” PETER.  (LUKE 22:31-32)

F)    I BELIEVE THAT IF WE ARE OBEDIENT WE “KEEP OURSELVES” WITHIN HIS LOVING CARE AND NOTHING HAPPENS TO US THAT GOD DOES NOT ALLOW.

G)   NEVERTHELESS, TRIALS AND TESTS ARE A PART OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE: 1Pe 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

H)   IT IS NOT SO WITH THE WORLD: “THEY ARE UNDER THE SWAY (INFLUENCE) OF THE EVIL ONE.  (THEY ARE UNDER HIS CONTROL.)

VI)  GOD WANTS US TO KNOW THE TRUTH AND LIVE THE TRUTH (19-21)

A)   JESUS, GOD IN THE FLESH, HAS COME TO BRING US UNDERSTANDING – THE WORD BECAME FLESH.

B)   JESUS SAID “YOU SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE…”

C)   FINALLY, IN CLOSING WE ARE EXHORTED “LITTLE CHILDREN, KEEP YOURSELF FROM IDOLS.”  THE IDOLS OF THAT TIME, NEARLY 2000 YEARS AGO, ARE NOT THE SAME AS THE IDOLS THAT WE HAVE TODAY.

D)   Wesley’s Commentary: Keep yourselves from idols – From all worship of false gods, from all worship of images or of any creature, and from every inward idol; from loving, desiring, fearing anything more than God. Seek all help and defence from evil, all happiness in the true God alone.

E)   Mathew Henry’s Commentary: Happy are those to whom it is given to know that the Son of God is come, and to have a heart to trust in and rely on him that is true! May this be our privilege; we shall thus be kept from all idols and false doctrines, and from the idolatrous love of worldly objects, and be kept by the power of God, through faith, unto eternal salvation. To this living and true God, be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

F)    Col 3:5 (NIV) Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.

G)   IF YOU DEFINE AN IDOL AS ANYTHING THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU THAN GOD OR KEEPS YOU FROM BEING WHAT GOD WANTS YOU TO BE THE LIST MIGHT INCLUDE:  MATERIALISM, MONEY, FAME & FORTUNE.
