1st John (part 6)

1ST JOHN (PART 6 )

THE MANDATE OF BROTHERLY LOVE

 (PASTOR LEE JACKSON)

I)     INTRODUCTION –   ONE OF THE MAJOR RECURRING THEMES OF 1ST JOHN IS THE LOVE OF THE BRETHREN, THE LOVE THAT CHRISTIANS SHOULD HAVE FOR ONE ANOTHER. THE WORD USED FOR LOVE IN OUR TEXT TODAY IN ITS VARIOUS FORMS IS “AGAPE” THE SAME WORD IN 1CORINTHIANS 13 (THE LOVE CHAPTER OF THE BIBLE).  THERE ARE AT LEAST THREE KINDS OF LOVE SPOKEN ABOUT IN THE NEW TESTAMENT:  SEXUAL OR SENSUAL LOVE “EROS”, BROTHERLY LOVE “PHILO” AND THE PUREST KIND OF LOVE (GOD’S LOVE FOR US AND THE LOVE THAT WE SHOULD HAVE FOR ONE ANOTHER) “AGAPE” LOVE. IT IS A MORAL, PURE, UNSELFISH LOVE THAT GOD HAS REVEALED TO US THROUGH CHRIST AND IS REVEALED IN GOD’S CHILDREN.   TEXT: CHAPTER 3:10-24 & 4:7-11 &  (NKJV).

II)    IT IS THE DEFINING, ESSENTIAL DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE CHILDREN OF GOD AND THE CHILDREN OF SATAN – OUR LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER (10-15)

A)   OUR ATTITUDES, OUR ACTIONS, OUR VALUES MANIFEST THAT LOVE

B)   IF THAT LOVE IS NOT MANIFESTING ITSELF THEN I WOULD BE CONCERNED THAT THE SPIRIT OF GOD IS NOT PRESENT IN YOU, FOR GOD IS LOVE

C)   LOVE IS FUNDAMENTAL DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTIC OF GOD’S NATURE

D)   IT WAS REVEALED IN CREATION – IN THE GARDEN – IN THE BEGINNING. IT WAS REVEALED TO ISRAEL, HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE & IT WAS REVEALED IN CHRIST

III)   LOVE IS AUTHENTICATED/ VALIDATED BY LOVING ACTION/SACRIFICE (16 – 18)

A)   CHRISTIAN LOVE FOR OUR BROTHERS & SISTERS IS NOT THEORY BUT TO BE PUT INTO PRACTICE

B)   GOD DEMONSTRATED HIS LIFE, LAYING DOWN HIS LIFE FOR US (1JN 4:7-4:11)

C)   HE CALLS ON US TO LAY DOWN OUR LIVES FOR ONE ANOTHER.  WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

D)   WE LAY DOWN OUR LIVES FOR OUR CHILDREN & GRAND CHILDREN BUT EVEN THE WORLD DOES THIS.  THIS IS NOT AN OCCASIONAL ACT OF HEROISM BUT THE NORMAL EVERYDAY LIFE OF THE CHILD OF GOD.

IV)  THE EXPRESSION OF GOD’S LOVE IN US TOWARD OUR BROTHERS & SISTERS IN CHRIST PRODUCES CONFIDENCE TOWARD GOD (19-21)

A)    ASSURANCE/REASSURANCE, CONFIDENCE (FAITH) IN GOD’S PROMISES

B)   CONFIDENCE THAT HE HEARS AND WILL ANSWER OUR PRAYERS

V)   WE RECEIVE WHATSOEVER WE ASK OF HIM BECAUSE HE LIVES WITHIN US & WE WALK IN OBEDIENCE TO HIM (22-24)

A)   THIS IS NOT THE KEEPING OF HIS COMMANDMENTS THROUGH OUR OWN EFFORTS AND SELF DISCIPLINE

B)   WE ARE ABLE TO KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS AND PLEASE HIM BECAUSE HE DWELLS IN US AND EXPRESSES HIMSELF THROUGH US (1JN 4:16-17)

VI)  CONCLUSION – LOVING ONE ANOTHER IS NOT OPTIONAL, IT IS CHRIST’S COMMAND AND REQUISITE TO REMAIN IN HIS LOVE AND LIVING THE JOYFUL, PURPOSEFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE. (JOHN 15:10-15)
