2 Peter (part 1)

2peter (part 1) – THE BENEFITS OF KNOWING GOD

(Pastor Lee Jackson FFWC)

I) INTRODUCTION – SOME TIME AGO I DID A SERIES ON 1st peter.  I THOUGHT TO FOLLOW THIS UP WITH A SERIES ON 2ND PETER.  I THINK YOU WILL ENJOY THIS AS MUCH AS I ENJOY PREPARING IT.  PETER IS A MAN THAT I CAN RELATE TO.  HE WAS IMPATIENT, IMPETUOUS AND OUTSPOKEN. AT ONE MOMENT HE HAD A DIVINE REVELATION OF WHO CHRIST WAS, THE NEXT MOMENT JESUS WAS SAYING TO HIM: JESUS LOOKED AT PETER AND SAID “GET BEHIND ME SATAN”.  (OTHER EXAMPLES: MT OF TRANSFIGURATION, WHEN JESUS WANTED TO WASH HIS FEET, DENYING CHRIST, DROUGHT OF FISHES, MAN BEGGING ALMS AT THE TEMPLE.) 2ND PETER written 66 – 68 AD SHORTLY BEFORE HIS MARTYRDOM IN ROM.   reading: 2PETER 1:1-4 (niv): text: 2Peter 1:3: “his divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called by his own glory and goodness.”

II)  the knowledge of god: gives us strength for living

A)     to live life to its fullest potential: to find fulfillment & contentment

B)      to discover the meaning & purpose of life: bringing glory to god

C)      to love & be loved; have authentic loving, LASTING godly relationships

D)     to experience the goodness of a faithful, loving god WHO PROMISED THAT HE WOULD NOT LEAVE US NOR FORSAKE US

E)      to understand that in believing on Jesus Christ we have become sons of god (rom 8:14-16)

F)      to know that IN OUR TRIALS he will not give you more than you can bear

G)     TO BE SURE THAT HIS STRENGTH IS DEMONSTRATED IN OUR TIMES OF WEAKNESS

H)     to live without fear of death or dying  2Ti 1:7 (kjv)   For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

I)        to know where you are going when you die…i go to prepare a place…

III)  the knowledge of god: gives us power for godliness

A)     to know that your sins have been forgiven: ROM 8:1 (Kjv) “THERE IS NOW NO CONDEMNATION TO THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS…”

B)      to have fellowship with god through Jesus Christ, his son

C)      to have power to be his witnesses: baptism of the holy spirit

D)     to abide in him bearing fruit that remains: fruit of the spirit

E)      to discover your gifts & find your place in the body of Christ

F)      TO PRAY WITH THE CERTAINTY THAT GOD HEARS YOU

IV)   the knowledge of god: enables us to participate in the divine nature

A)     Rom 1:20 (kjv)   “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen…”

B)      the glory of god is not just his omnipotence (all powerful), his omniscience (all knowing), omnipresence (everywhere presence), it’s that with all of this he loves us, he care about us:  (John 3:16 kjv)

C)      Jesus prayed for that we would become one with the father & the son:  John 17:20 23 (niv)

V) conclusion –  THE PSALMIST DAVID KIND OF SUMS UP THE BLESSINGS AND BENEFITS OF KNOWING GOD  (read PSALM 103:1-5 (niv))   1Pe 2:9 (kjv)  “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light”  IT PAYS TO SERVE GOD!  IT BRINGS BLESSINGS IN THIS LIFE AND GIVES US THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE.   THE LIGHTS OF THIS WORLD ARE GOING DIMMER, BUT THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL IS SHINING EVER BRIGHTER.
