The Law of the Tongue

THE LAW OF THE TONGUE

  WORDS THAT HEAL-NOT HURT

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

  1. I.              INTRODUCTION – I WOULD REMIND YOU AGAIN THAT THIS SERIES ON THE 21 UNBREAKABLE LAWS OF LIFE IS TAKEN FROM THE BOOK BY MAX ANDERS BY THE SAME TITLE.  SOMEONE SAID “STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS WILL NEVER HURT ME.  WE KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE WORDS CAN HURT AND WORDS CAN HEAL.  WORDS CAN TEAR DOWN; WORDS CAN BUILD UP.  WE HAVE IN OUR TONGUE A TOOL THAT GIVES US THE ABILITY TO ENCOURAGE, TO EMPOWER OR TO DISCOURAGE, DAMAGE AND DEFEAT.  (READ INTRO TO CHAPTER 9, “THE 21 UNBREAKABLE LAWS OF LIFE”, PP 86, 87) TEXT: EPH 4:29 – 31 KJV

II)     WHAT DOES THE BIBLE TEACH ABOUT THE TONGUE (JAMES 3:2-11)

A)    the tongue is compared to a bit in a horses mouth or a rudder on a ship

B)    the tongue is compared to a fire…how so?

C)    out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (luke 6:46)

III)   WHAT ARE SOME OF WAYS OUR words can hurt?

A)    lies and innuendo

ü  when we lie we first sin against god then we sin against others

ü  destroy a person’s reputation, cost opportunities & damage  relationships

ü  when we lie, we usually tell more to coverup our first lie

ü  sooner or later lies catch up with us; it reveals our character, tarnishes our reputation and damages our credibility

ü  when a christian lies he tarnishes god’s reputation

ü  the bible says that the devil is a liar and the father of lies

ü  also that no liar will enter the kingdom of heaven…

B)    gossip

ü  gossip is of passed of as information for enlighted prayer

ü  spreading rumors is another form of gossip.  it is easy to pass along information that may or may not be true

ü  1timothy 5:13 warns against wandering around from house to house, being not only idle but gossips and busybodies, saying things that should not be said.

ü  it is easy for christians to fall into this trap because our love and concern for people sometimes gets us more involved in their lives and business than we should be…especially if we are trying to help them.

C)    unclean speech or coarse jesting

ü  (author told of about a prominent lay leader in church that he pastored who leaned into his ear, whispering in coarse language).

ü  what should we do when this happens?  how does the expression “FAMILARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT” PLAY INTO THIS?

ü  EPH 5:1-4 NKJV

ü  COL 4:6 NKJV

IV)   what are some ways your words can heal OR HELP?

A)    ENCOURAGING OTHERS

ü  THE POWER OF ENCOURAGEMENT IS truly AWESOME…

ü  IT CAN TURNH DEFEAT INTO VICTORY, SADNESS INTO JOY, DESPAIR INTO HOPE

ü  ProVERBS 12:25  Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad.

ü  ProVERBS 16:24  Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

ü  CAN YOU THINK OF A TIME WHEN SOMETHING SOMEONE SAID WAS A GREAT ENCOURAGEMENT TO YOU?

ü  CAN YOU THINK OF A TIME WHEN GOD USED YOU TO ENCOURAGE SOMEONE?

B)    SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE

ü  THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT WE ARE TO SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE (EPH 4:11-16 NKJV)

ü  IF THERE IS SOMETHING IN A FRIEND’S LIFE HURTING THEM AND THEY ARE UNAWARE OF IT WE SHOULD TELL THEM THE TRUTH IN LOVE

ü  READ PRO 27:5,6

ü  READ GAL  6:1

C)    BEING CHEERFUL

II)    HOW DO WE BECOME A PERSON WHOSE WORDS HELP AND HEAL?

A)    THINK ABOUT YOUR SPEECH – DO YOU LIE OR EXAGGERATE, GET GOSSIP OR SPREAD RUMORS, GET ANGRY AND SAY THINGS YOU REGRET, OCCASIONALLY GET ANGRY AND SWEAR OR USE VULGAR LANGUAGE, TELL COARSE JOKES

B)    ARE YOU TRUE TO YOUR WORD?

C)    UNGODLY SPEECH AND TALK IS AN INDICATION OF A DEEPER PROBLEM – A HEART PROBLEM, A SIN PROBLEM…  Mat 15:8, 9  This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9  But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. ….Mat 15:17 – 19  Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18  But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
