A Purpose Driven Chruch

A Purpose Driven Church

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

  1. INTRODUCTION  –  before we talk about  the purpose of the church, we should define what we mean by the church.  the church is not a building, IT IS NOT EVEN A SINGLE CONGREGATION.   it is not something man brought into existence because he thought it was a good idea.  the church of the new testament was ordained of god for his SOVEREIGN purposes. remember the question jesus asked his disciples in matt 16:15 “who do men say that i am” and the dialogue that followed which concluded with jesus saying “thou art peter (little stone); and upon this rock (MASSIVE STONE) I will build my church; and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” the n.t. word used in the original language is “ECCLESIA” which means “called out” that is called out from the world and separated onto god to fulfill his purpose.   the n.t. teaches that christ is the head of the church:  eph 1:22-23, col 1:18. it follows the church is subject to christ: eph 5:24. the church is also called the body of christ.   IT IS A LIVING, SPIRITUAL ORGANISM. last but not least the n.t. tells us that “christ loved the church and gave himself for it” (eph 1:5:25).  THIS TELLS US HOW VALUABLE THE CHURCH IS TO OUR LORD.

II.           TO KNOW CHRIST AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN

A.   phil 3:7-8  But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ…

B.   PHIL 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

1Jn 2:3-6  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

IV.         TO IDENTIFY WITH HIS CAUSE

THE CAUSE OF CHRIST FOR THE APOSTLE PAUL WAS TO PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS TO THE GENTILES: Eph 3:1  For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, Eph 3:14-15  For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15  Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

THERE ARE MANY WHO ARE A PART OF THE FELLOWSHIP & EVEN BECOME MEMBERS OF A CHURCH WHO HAVE NOT FULLY IDENTIFIED WITH THE CAUSE OF CHRIST.   JESUS WILL SEPARATE THE TARES FROM THE WHEAT.

FULLY IDENTIFYING WITH THE CAUSE OF CHRIST WILL COST YOU EVERYTHING.

Luke 14:27- 28  And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28  For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST YOU TO FOLLOW CHRIST?  IN A WORD: EVERYTHING.

Mat 16:24-26   Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

IV.         TO CONTINUE HIS WORK

EVANGELIZE – John 4:34 – 35  Jesus saith unto them, My meat [spiritual food]is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. 35  Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

PREACH THE GOSPEL – Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

DISCIPLE   Mat 28:18 -19 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

EQUIP FOR SERVICE  Eph 4:11 – 12 (NIV) It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up in Christ.

V. TO BRING GLORY TO GOD

WHEN THE ANGEL ANNOUNCED JESUS BIRTH THERE APPEARED A HEAVENLY HOST OF ANGELS SINGING: Luk 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

John 17:4 – I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5  And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6  I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. 7  Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. 8  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Rom 15:5-6  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: 6  That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Php 2:11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

IF OUR CHRISTIAN LIFE AND SERVICE DOES NOT BRING GLORY TO GOD THEN WE ARE SERIOUSLY MISSING THE WHOLE POINT OF IT: Mat 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

VI. CONCLUSION – The Bible teaches that we are the body of christ:  Rom 12:5  So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?  LETS LOOK AT PAUL’S TEACHING ON THE BODY OF CHRIST IN 1Co 12:12-27 MSG BIBLE.   TO SUMMARIZE THIS PASSAGE:

  • RECOGNIZE THAT YOU ARE PART OF “THE BODY”.   UNDER THE HEADSHIP OF CHRIST.   YOU ARE ASSIGNED TO WORK UNDER DELEGATED SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY.
  • WITH THE LORD’S AND YOUR PASTOR’S HELP FIND YOUR PLACE IN THE BODY.
  • RECOGNIZE & VALUE THE GIFTS & CALLINGS OF OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BODY.
  • LEARN TO WORK COOPERATIVELY WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BODY IN LOVE.
  • REFUSE TO COMPARE YOURSELF WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BODY.  THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION.  NO MEMBER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANOTHER.
  • WE ALL NEED TO DO OUR PART FOR THE BODY TO FUNCTION PROPERLY.
  • IF ONE MEMBER OF THE BODY IS HURTING, WE ALL HURT.
