A Tribute to Mothers

A TRIBUTE TO MOTHERS

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

  1. INTRODUCTION – SO MANY TODAY DENIGRATE THE HIGH OFFICE OF MOTHERHOOD.   CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT HER PEERS MIGHT SAY WHEN A YOUNG GIRL GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL IS ASKED WHAT SHE WANTS TO BE AND RESPONDS:  I WANT TO GET MARRIED AND HAVE A FAMILY AND BE THE BEST WIFE AND MOTHER THAT I CAN BE.   I CAN HEAR THE SNICKERS AND THE LAUGHTER!  BUT, PERHAPS THAT IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOT HAD A GOOD MOTHER OR UNDERSTOOD THE DIFFERENCE A GOOD MOTHER CAN MAKE IN A FAMILY AND IN HER EXTENDED FAMILY AND COMMUNITY.
  2. 2.       TEXT PROVERBS 31:10 – 29
  3. THE PROVERBS 31 WOMAN IS AN AWESOME WIFE AND MOTHER.  I TRIED TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES TO UPDATE HER RESUME TO OUR TIME:
  4. SHE IS VIRTUOUS (VS 10) – MORALLY UPRIGHT, HONEST & CHASTE, RIGHTEOUS, SHE KEEPS HERSELF FOR HER HUSBAND.  MARIAM WEBSTER SAYS “A VIRTUOUS BEHAVIOR LIFE IS ITS OWN REWARD.
  5. SHE IS TRUSTWORTHY (11, 12) – THE HEART OF HER HUSBAND SAFELY TRUSTS IN HER.  SHE DOES HER HUSBAND AND FAMILY GOOD ALL THE DAYS OF HER LIFE.  she has his back.  she doesn’t talk about her husband’s weakness or failures among her friends.  instead she prays for him and speaks the truth in love to him.
  6. SHE IS INDUSTRIOUS (HARDWORKING) (13, 18) – SHE WORKS WILLINGLY WITH HER HANDS, SHE RISES WHILE IT IS STILL DARK AND WORKS UNTIL LATE AT NIGHT.  PROBABLY DOESN’T have a lot of time WATCH A LOT OF TV.
  7. SHE PROVIDEs CLOTHING AND FOOD FOR HER HOUSEHOLD (15, 19, 21, 27) – SHE GIVES MEAT TO HER HOUSEHOLD AND EATS NOT THE BREAD OF IDLENESS (SHE IS NOT LAZY).  she SHOPS WISELY AND PREPARES FOOD FOR HER FAMILY, DOES THE LAUNDRY, CLEANS THE HOUSE.   (WE HOPE SHE GETS A LOT OF HELP FROM HER HUSBAND AND CHILDREN.)
  8. SHE IS WISE IN HER INVESTMENTS (16) – SHE IS FRUGLE & saves for a rainy day.  she knows a good deal when she sees it and is patient until that time comes.  she MAINTAINS THE HOUSEHOLD BUDGET, PAYS THE BILLS, HONORS GOD BY TITHING THE HOUSEHOLD INCOME.  she knows that THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT HER SOURCE but her own industry and diligence.
  9. SHE IS COMPASSIONATE TO THE POOR (20) – SHE STRETCHES OUT HER HAND TO THE POOR AND REACHES OUT TO THE NEEDY.    yet she is discerning in how and when she gives.
  10. HER HUSBAND IS HONORED AMONG THE ELDERS BECAUSE OF HIS WIFE AND FAMILY. (23)  her husband often gets the credit for her industry and wisdom.  she does not need to be in the spot light and take credit.  she knows who she is in christ.
  11. SHE TAKES CARE OF HER BODY AND DRESSES WELL (17) – SHE GIRDS HER LOINS WITH STRENGTH & STRENGTHENETH HER ARMS, SHE CLOTHES HERSELF WITH TAPESTRY, HER CLOTHING IS SILK AND PURPLE.  LET ME INTERPRET:  SHE EATS RIGHT & EXERCIZES DOESN’T SMOKE OR GET DRUNK, DO DRUGS OR PARTY.  her family is her priority.  HE WANTS TO BE THERE FOR HER FAMILY AS LONG AS THEY NEED HER.  SHE DRESSES WELL AND KEEPS HERSELF ATTRACTIVE FOR HER HUSBAND.
  12. SHE IS GENTILE BUT WISE (26) – She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.  SHE CHOSES HER WORDS CAREFULLY, TO ENCOURAGE AND UPLIFT OTHERS.   she sees when people are hurting and seeks to heal their wounds with words of kindness and encouragement.
  13. HER HUSBAND AND CHILDREN RISE UP AND CALL HER BLESSED.  HER HUSBAND PRAISES HER.  (28) – SHE IS LOVED HONORED BY HER HUSBAND AND CHILDREN.
  14. SHE IS PRICELESS (10) –HER PRICE IS FAR ABOVE RUBIES.   her husband and family knows that SHE IS IRREPLACEABLE.   she is treasured by her husband.
    1. THE NEXT VERSE SUMS UP THIS PASSAGE: Pro 31:30 FAVOUR is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.   SHE FEARS THE LORD and trembles at his word.  she seeks god’s favor. she does not want to grieve the holy spirit or jeopardize the intimancy she enjoys with her god.   her outward beauty may fade but her inward beauty is illuminous, breath taking.
    2. THE BIBLE SAYS:  Pro 9:10, 11 (KJV)   The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is under-standing. 11 FOR by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
    3. CONCLUSION – I WAS BLESSED AS A CHILD AND ADULT WITH A GODLY MOTHER.  MY MOTHER PASSED AWAY YEARS AGO, BUT MEMORIES OF HER COME FLOODING BACK.  I REMEMBER WHEN:
    4.  I WAS VERY SICK WITH INNER EAR INFECTION.  IT WAS MY MOTHER THAT INSISTED ON TAKING ME TO A DOCTOR AND GETTING THE SPECIALIZED TREATMENT THAT I NEEDED, even though we could not afford it.
    5. WHEN MY DAD DECIDED TO MANAGE & RUN A 2ND FARM IN ADDITION TO OUR OWN DAIRY FARM.  MY MOTHER WENT TO THE BARN AND WORKED ALONG SIDE MY BROTHERS, WHILE PREPARING FOOD, DOING LAUNDRY AND CLEANING THE HOUSE, TAKING CARE OF FAMILY OF EIGHT CHILDREN.
    6. WHEN MY DAD LEFT US FOR ANOTHER WOMAN for a period of several years, MY MOTHER, WITHOUT WORK EXPERIENCE OR SPECIALIZED EDUCATION WENT TO WORK AT A CHICKEN FACTORY CUTTING UP CHICKENS; SHE WOULD COME HOME WITH CUTS ALL OVER HER HANDS AND FINGERS.  SHE MADE $1.25 PER HOUR.
    7. i remember coming home late one night.  as i tried to sneak into the house, i could hear my mother praying for her kids.  she was a praying woman.  we kept her on her knees.
    8. just before she died, my mother suffered with alsheimers or some form of dementia.   my sister, martha went to spend some time with mom.  sometimes mom did not know martha and sometimes she did.  martha asked mom if she was saved and ready to meet jesus. my mom proceeded to quote the 8th chapter of romans from memory, beginning to end.
    9. i consider myself so blessed by god.  my mother has long passed – she is in her heavenly home.   her labor has ceased, but god gave me a godly wife when i was 18 years old and we have been together 47 years this july.   this morning i wish to honor my wife and the mothers of faith family, and to recognize all you are and do for your families and for our church family.  it is your hard work, prayers and devotion that make all the difference.  we thank you for standing in the gap and making up the hedge if protection for your families and your church.  from the bottom of our hearts  we say “thank you!”.
    10. i would like to say a prayer over you at this time!
      1. THE 5TH COMMANDMENT: Exo 20:12  Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
