Abiding in the Vine

ABIDING IN THE VINE

(THERE IS LIFE IN THE VINE)

(PASTOR LEE JACKSON – FFWC –1/9/10)

INTRODUCTIONTHERE ARE TWO PARABLES THAT JESUS TOLD THAT RELATE TO AGRICULTURE THAT ARE ESPECIALLY DEAR TO ME.  THE FIRST IS THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER.  WHICH RELATES TO THE SOWING OF THE WORD OF GOD AND HOW IT IS RECEIVED – WHICH SPEAKS OF OUR OPPORTUNITIES TO RECEIVE SALVATION;  THE SECOND IS THE PARABLLE OF ABIDING IN THE VINE WHICH SPEAKS OF OUR LIFE IN CHRIST, OUR CHRISTIAN WALK AFTER WE HAVE RECEIVED THE WORD.

WE LIVE IN A TIME WHEN THERE IS A GREAT EMPHASIS UPON ACCOMPLISHMENT, ACHIEVEMENT, DOING AND SELF ACTUALIZATION. AS I REFLECT ON GOD’S DEALINGS IN OUR LIVES AND IN THE LIVES O.T & N.T. SAINTS, IT SEEMS LIKE GOD’S PRIORITIES ARE OFTEN VEERY DIFFERENT THAN OURS.  WE PUT THE EMPHASIS UPON ACCOMPLISHMENT WHILE GOD SEEMS TO PUT THE EMPHASIS UPON FAITH AND FAITHFULNESS, KNOWING GOD AND ABIDING IN CHRIST.  AFTER GOD ACCOMPLISHES IN US WHAT HE INTENDS… THEN HE CAN ACCOMPLISH THROUGH US MORE THAN YOU EVER COULD IMAGINE.

TEXT: john 15:1-8 NIV

MAJOR POINTS INCLUDE:

ü  I AM THE TRUE VINE AND MY FATHER IS THE VINEDRESSER (GARDNER)

ü  HE CUTS OFF EVERY BRANCH THAT IS UNFRUITFUL

ü  HE PRUNES EVERY BRANCH THAT IS FRUITFUL SO THAT IT WILL BEAR MORE FRUIT

ü  JESUS SAYS REMAIN IN ME AND I WILL REMAIN IN YOU

ü  NO BRANCH CAN BEAR FRUIT BY IT’S SELF

ü  IF YOU REMAIN IN ME & MY WORDS REMAIN IN YOU ASK WHAT EVER YOU WISH;  IT WILL BE GIVEN YOU

ü  WE GLORIFY THE FATHER GLORY WHEN WE BEAR MUCH FRUIT

ü  BY BEARING MUCH FRUIT WE SHOW OURSELVE TO BE JESUS DISCIPLES

ü  JESUS TELLS US THESE THING SO THAT OUR JOY MAY BE COMPLETE (JOHN 17:13, HEB 12:2)

TEXT: john 15:9 – 17 NIV.

MAJOR POINTS INCLUDE:

ü  JESUS HAS THE SAME LOVE FOR US AS THE FATHER HAS FOR HIM

ü  WE ARE TO REMAIN IN HIS LOVE (AS WE REMAIN IN THE VINE)

ü  WE REMAIN IN HIS LOVE WHEN WE DO WHAT HE SAYS (OBEY HIS COMMANDMENTS)

ü  HE COMMANDS US TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS HE HAS LOVED US

ü  HE LOVED US SO MUCH THAT HE LAID DOWN HIS LIFE FOR US

ü  WE DID NOT CHOSE HIM…HE CHOSE US AND APPOINTED US TO BEAR MUCH FRUIT

ü  THE PRINCIPLE FRUIT IS LOVE (GAL 5:22,23; 1COR 13:13)

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Joh 17:13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.

Phi 2:2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

Heb 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

Isa 5:1  Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: 2  And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. 3  And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. 4  What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? 5  And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: 6  And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7  For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
