Blessed are Pure in Heart

BLESSED ARE PURE IN HEART
(THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT, PART 6)

I) INTRODUCTION – WE ARE CONTINUING ON WITH THE SIXTH MESSAGE IN OUR SERIES ON THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT.

Blessed (happy) are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Matt 5:8 NIV

JESUS DOES NOT SAY BLESSED OR HAPPY ARE THOSE WHO ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS OR THOSE THAT ACQUIRE A VAST AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE OR THOSE WHO ACQUIRE GREAT WEALTH – NO. HE SAID BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO ARE PURE IN HEART, FOR THEY WILL SEE GOD. WHEN MOSES THAT GREAT LEADER WENT UP INTO THE MOUNTAIN AT GOD’S COMMAND HE ASKED GOD IF HE COULD SEE HIM. GOD TOLD MOSES THAT NO ONE COULD SEE HIS FACE AND LIVE, YET GOD HID MOSES IN THE CLEFT OF A ROCK AND ALLOWED HIM TO SEE HIM AFTER HE PASSED BY. YET HERE JESUS AUTHORITATIVELY PROCLAIMED BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART, FOR THEY WILL SEE GOD. JESUS KNEW WHAT MOSES DID NOT THAT WRAPPED IN HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS WE BECOME INFINITELY MORE RIGHTEOUS THAN MOSES WAS ON MOUNT SINAI. YES, WE CAN BECOME PURE IN HEART AND IF WE DO WE WILL SEE GOD! THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS OF HIS DAY PLACED EMPHASIS UPON CONDUCT, ETHICS AND BEHAVIOR – THE EXTERNAL. THEY WERE CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT MEN THOUGHT RATHER THAN WHAT GOD KNOW. THE BIBLE HAS A LOT TO SAY ABOUT OUR HEARTS: IT SPEAKS OF DECEITFUL HEARTS, PROUD HEARTS, PERVERSE HEART, COURAGEOUS HEART, LOVING HEART, FEARFUL HEART, GRIEVING HEART, CONTRITE HEART, SINCERE HEART, BROKEN HEARTS, YIELDED HEART AND THE HUMBLE HEART. WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED A HEART?

II) WHAT IS THE HEART?
A) KARDIA – GREEK (ENGLISH CARDIAC, ETC.)
B) IT IS THE CENTER OF OUR PERSON-HOOD AND OUR PERSONALITY
C) IT IS THE MIND (REASONING, PLANS & PURPOSES) (DIFFERENT THAT THE BRAIN), WILL AND EMOTIONS – THE CENTER OF OUR AFFECTIONS AND DESIRES – ANOTHER NAME FOR OUR SOUL.
D) THE CENTER OF OUR INWARD LIFE – THE REPOSITORY OF HUMAN DEPRAVITY AND HUMAN GOODNESS.
E) MAN IS A TRIUNE BEING: BODY (PHYSICAL), HEART OR SOUL (MIND, WILL, EMOTIONS, AFFECTIONS), SPIRIT (THAT WHICH GOD BREATHED INTO ADAM MAKING ADAM IN GOD’S IMAGE; THAT PART THAT LIVES FOREVER.
III)
WHY IS GOD SO CONCERNED ABOUT OUR HEARTS?
A) WHEN ADAM AND EVE SINNED THEIR EYES WERE OPENED TO KNOW GOOD AND EVIL AT THE SAME TIME THEIR HEART WAS POLLUTED / CONTAMINATED SO THAT THE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD WAS INSTANTLY BROKEN.
B) THEY FEARED GOD AND WENT INTO HIDING. THEY THOUGHT BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T SEE HIM THAT HE COULDN’T SEE THEM.
C) GOD, OF COURSE, KNEW WHAT HAD HAPPENED. HIS HEART WAS BROKEN TOO. Gen 6:5-7:The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. NIV
D) THE RELATIONSHIP THAT HE HAD WITH ADAM AND EVE AND SO ENJOYED WAS SEVERED. Ps 24:3-4: Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?Who may stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, NIV

IV) ONLY GOD CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE SINFUL CONDITION OF MAN’S HEART BUT HE NEEDS SOMETHING TO WORK WITH IN US.
A) WHEN DAVID SINNED HE CRIED OUT TO GOD: Ps 51:10-12: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. NIV
B) GOD TESTS OUR HEART TO SHOW US WHAT IS IN US: Jer 17:9-10: The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” NIV
C) HE DETESTS THE PROUD AND THE PERVERSE HEART:
1) Prov 16:5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. NIV
2) Prov 17:20: A man of perverse heart does not prosper; he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble. NIV
3) Matt 15:17-20: “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man `unclean.’ 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man `unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him `unclean.'” NIV
D) WHEN OUR HEART IS POLLUTED AND CONTAMINATED BY SIN WE CANNOT SEE GOD OR UNDERSTAND HIS WORD. THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE WAS LOFTED INTO AN ORBIT AROUND THE EARTH ABOVE THE CONTAMINATION OF THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE. FROM ITS ORBIT THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE CAN CLEARLY VIEW DISTANT GALAXIES THAT CANNOT BE SEEN WITH EARTH BOUND TELESCOPES.

E) IF GOD DOES NOT FIND RIGHTEOUSNESS HE IS LOOKING FOR BROKENNESS (HE CAN WORK WITH THAT):
1) Ps 51:17: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. NIV
2) Joel 2:13: Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. NIV
3) Isa 6:1-5: In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne , high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” NIV

V) GOD WANTS TO GIVE US A NEW HEART THAT WILL FOLLOW AFTER HIM:
A) Ezek 11:18-21: I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. 20 Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God. NIV
B) Rom 10:8-10: “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. NIV
C) 2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
D) 1Jo 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

VI) THE REWARD OF HAVING A PURE HEART
A) THAT THEY SHALL SEE GOD: Rev 22:4A “And they shall see his face”
B) AND THEY SHALL BELONG TO HIM Rev 22:4B “and his name shall be in their foreheads.”
VII) CONCLUSION: WE MUST GUARD OUR HEART:
1) Prov 4:23: Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. NIV
2) Heb 3:12-13: See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by s in’s deceitfulness. NIV
3) Heb 10:22-24:let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. NIV
