Slaying the Giants

DAVID & GOLIATH – SLAYING THE GIANTS in your life

  1. I.  INTRODUCTION  – THE STORY OF DAVID AND GOLIATH IS ONE THAT WE RELATE TO OUR CHILDREN; it is too easy to forget that this is in the bible for a purpose.  this really happened and god wants to speak to all of us through david’s encounter with goliath. (TELL THE STORY OF DAVID’S & GOLIATH:  1samuel 17.)  DAVID’S VICTORY OVER GOLIATH CAME AS A RESULT OF FAITH IN GOD THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN TESTED AND PROVEN.  text: 1samuel 17:44-51.   THERE ARE FIVE SPECIFIC FACTORS THAT LED TO HIS TRIUMPH OVER GOLIATH.   

 

  1. II.             1st david had a heart after god
    1. HE WAS A SHEPHERD BOY WHO TENDED HIS FATHERS SHEEP
    2. he began  to seek the lord early in life (1samuel 16:7)
    3. PSALM ONE OF DAVID’S EARLIEST PSALMS IS RECORDED IN 2CHRONICLES 16.  (READ 2CHR 16:8-11)
    4. “seek the lord while he may be found, call upon while he is near…”
  1. III.            2nd dAVID WAS ZEALOUS FOR GOD’S HONOR & REPUTATIONdavid recognized that goliath was not just mocking israel he was mocking god.
    1. it was no accident that david show up just as goliath came out
    2. “who is this uncircumcized philistine who defies the armies of the living god?”  (vs 26:b)
  2. satan is always taunting believers just as he did eve in the garden
  3. as we mature in christ, christ and his kingdom become our priority
  4. we become defenders of the faith & god’s honor

IV.            3rd DAVID’S WAS absolutely CONFIDENT IN GOD’S POWER

    1. HIS CONFIDENCE IN GOD HAD GROWN OVER THE YEARS
    2. GOD HAD DELIVERED DAVID FROM THE BEAR & THE LION…
    3. before long it would be king saul himself that would become david’s advesary

V.             4th david learned not to trust in his own strength but in god’s power

    1. god taught moses this very lesson many years before, as he did joshua & gideon…
    2. lets look at verses:45-47 again.
    3. C.      the new testament is emphatically clear on this:  2cor 10:3-6

VI.            5th in times of crisis, DAVID learned to operate IN THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

    1. when samuel anointed david to be king to replace saul in 1samuel 16:13 says the spirit of the lord came upon him in power …
    2. Zec 4:6  “… the word of the LORD came to Zerubbabel who god had called to rebuild the temple: : ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.

conclusion – whenever god’s children face circumstances of seemingly insurmountable odds these giants we face can be overcome in the same way david overcame goliath, but sometimes we falll into the trap of trying to use saul’s armor when we confront our goliaths.  saul’s armor represents the arm of flesh, operating in our own strength and understanding.  it does not fit.  our armor is described in ephesians chapter six… david clothed himself in the spirit OF GOD, brought down the giant and cut off his head.

in paul’s benediction to the church of ephesus Eph 3:20-21 (NIV) Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.  the apostle paul also said in Philippians 4:13 (kjv)  I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.  ISAIAH 55:6 SPEAKS OF THE NECESSARY PREPARATION OF THE HEART!  DON’T WAIT FOR THE CRISIS TO PREPA  RE YOUR HEART & BUILD YOUR FAITH; DO IT NOW!

1Ch 16:8-11  Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. 9  Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. 10  Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. 11  Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.

Isa 55:6  Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call  ye upon him while he is near: 7  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
