Feasts of Israel (Part 1)

FEASTS OF ISRAEL – (PART 1: PASSOVER)
(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I) INTRODUCTION – I HAVE FELT TO DO A SERIES OF MESSAGES ON THE FEASTS OF ISRAEL AND HOW THEY POINTED TO AND WERE FULFILLED BY JESUS CHRIST. THESE FEASTS WERE INSTITUTED BY GOD. GOD ALSO SPECIFIED IN DETAIL HOW THESE FEASTS WERE TO BE CELEBRATED. I HAVE BEEN BLESSED IN PREPARING FOR THIS SERIES AS I SAW HOW GOD FULLFILLED THIS IN CHRIST DOWN TO THE SMALLEST DETAIL. WHICH SUSTAINS MY HOPE AND EXPECTATION THAT HE WILL KEEP HIS PROMISES CONCERNING OUR RESURRECTION AND OUR FUTURE WITH HIM IN HEAVEN. THERE ARE THREE MAIN FEASTS THAT WERE TO BE CELEBRATED AS A MEMORIAL OR REMEMBRANCE OF HOW GOD DELIVERED ISRAEL OUT OF EGYPT: PASSOVER, PENTECOST AND TABERNACLES. EVERY JEWISH MALE WAS REQUIRED TO JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM THREE TIMES A YEAR, ONE TIME FOR EACH FEAST. THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CELEBRATING THE FEASTS ARE FOUND IN SEVERAL PLACES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT INCLUDING LEVITICUS 23, NUMBERS 28 – 29 AND DEUTERONOMY 16. WE WILL STUDY THESE FEASTS ORDER BEGINNING WITH PASSOVER. PASSOVER INCLUDES THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD AND THE FEAST OF FIRST FRUITS. THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES INCLUDES THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS AND ATONEMENT. WE WILL BEGIN WITH PASSOVER. THE LORD TOLD MOSES: LEV 23:4 THESE ARE THE FEASTS OF THE LORD, EVEN HOLY CONVOCATIONS, WHICH YE SHALL PROCLAIM IN THEIR SEASONS. LEV 23:5 IN THE FOURTEENTH DAY OF THE FIRST MONTH AT EVEN IS THE LORD’S PASSOVER. THESE FEASTS WERE NOT JUST A TIME OF FEASTING, ALTHOUGH THEY INVOLVED EATING TOGETHER, BUT THEY WERE A HOLY CONVOCATION, A MEMORIAL ONTO THE LORD, A REMEMBRANCE OF WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR THEM AND THE FUTURE BLESSINGS THAT COME BY SERVING HIM.

II) HISTORICAL CONTEXT FOR THE ACTUAL PASSOVER (EXODUS 12:1 – 14)
A) THIS MONTH (NISSAN) WAS INSTITUTED BY GOD TO BE THE 1ST MONTH OF THE YEAR.
B) THIS WAS GOD’S FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH HIS COVENANT PEOPLE TO DELIVER THEM FROM THEIR BONDAGE IN EGYPT.
C) THE PASSOVER MEMORIALIZED THE 10TH AND FINAL PLAGUE THAT THE LORD BROUGHT AGAINST EGYPT.
D) GOD WOULD SEND A DEATH ANGEL OVER EGYPT AND THE FIRST BORN OF EVERY HOUSEHOLD, MEN AND BEASTS WOULD DIE THAT NIGHT – NO EGYPTIAN HOUSEHOLD WOULD BE SPARED.
E) GOD GAVE MOSES INSTRUCTIONS THAT IF FOLLOWED WOULD SPARE ISRAEL, BUT ONLY IF THEY WERE FOLLOWED TO THE LETTER. THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE VERY SPECIFIC.
F) THE DEATH ANGEL WOULD SEE THE BLOOD AND SKIP OVER OR “PASS OVER” THAT HOUSE, SPARING ITS OCCUPANTS, HENCE THE NAME “PASSOVER”.
G) A GREAT CRY WENT UP FROM EGYPT THAT NIGHT, NO EGYPTIAN HOUSEHOLD WAS SPARED, EVEN PHAROAH’S HOUSEHOLD.
H) AFTER EACH PREVIOUS PLAGUE PHAROAH HARDENED HIS HEART AND REFUSED TO LET ISRAEL GO, BUT AFTER THIS PLAGUE: READ EXODUS 12:30 – 33)
III) LETS SUMMARIZE KEY ASPECTS OF THE 1ST AND SUBSEQUENT JEWISH PASSOVER CELEBRATIONS.
A) EVERY HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD WAS TO SELECT A YOUNG MALE LAMB WITHOUT SPOT OR BLEMISH.
B) IT WAS TO BE SELECTED ON THE TENTH DAY OF THE FIRST MONTH – A NEW BEGINNING.
C) IT WAS TO BE OBSERVED FOR 4 DAYS TO INSURE THAT IT WAS PERFECT.
D) ON THE AFTERNOON / EARLY EVENING OF 5TH DAY IT WAS TO BE KILLED BY THE CONGREGATION ON THE 14TH DAY. (HEBREW DAY BEGINS IN THE EVENING AT 6:00)
E) THEY WERE TO TAKE THE BLOOD, AND STRIKE IT ON THE TWO SIDE POSTS AND OVER THE DOOR OF THE HOUSE, WHERE IT WAS TO BE EATEN. THE ENTIRE ENTRANCE TO THE HOUSE WAS COVERED BY THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB.
F) THE FAMILY WENT INTO THE HOUSE THROUGH THE DOOR COVERED BY BLOOD AND BY ACCEPTED BY FAITH THAT THE DEATH ANGEL WOULD PASSOVER THEIR HOUSE.
G) HEBREWS KILLED THE LAMB AT 3:00 IN THE AFTERNOON SO THAT THE MEAL COULD BE EATEN BY 6:00 ON THE 14TH DAY OF THE MONTH.
H) THE ENTIRE LAMB WAS TO BE EATEN. NOTHING WAS TO REMAIN UNTIL THE MORNING; ANYTHING THAT REMAINED WAS TO BE BURNT UNTIL CONSUMED.
I) IN PREPARING THE MEAL, NO BONE WAS TO BE BROKEN.
J) THIS WAS THE LORD’S PASSOVER; HE USED “THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB” TO SPARE HIS PEOPLE. THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB WAS THE ATONEMENT FOR THEIR SINS, SPARING THEIR DISTRUCTION.
K) LATER WHEN THE TEMPLE WAS BUILT, INSTEAD OF KILLING LAMBS AT THE DOORPOST, THE PEOPLE WOULD BRING THE LAMBS TO JERUSALEM AND THE PRIESTS WOULD KILL THEM AT THE TEMPLE.
L) THE PASSOVER CELEBRATION WAS A TIME OF GREAT JOY, PRAISE AND ADORATION IN WORSHIP OF GOD.
M) THE LEVITES WOULD LEAD THE PEOPLE IN SINGING THE PSALMS OF DAVID, SPECIFICALLY PSALMS 113 – 118. THEY WOULD ALL SING THE FIRST STANZA THEN THE LEVITS WOULD SING THE SECOND STANZA AND THE PEOPLE WOULD RESPOND BY SAYING “HALLELUJAH” OR “PRAISE THE LORD”.

IV) THE TIME WOULD COME WHEN GOD WOULD PROVIDE HIMSELF A LAMB.
A) JUST AS THE LORD STOPPED ABRAHAM WHEN HE RAISED HIS HAND TO SACRIFICE HIS ONLY SON ISAAC AND PROVIDED A LAMB, THE LORD WOULD ONE DAY PROVIDE HIMSELF A PERFECT LAMB.
B) THE LORD RAISED UP PROPHETS LIKE ISAIAH AND LATER JOHN THE BAPTIST TO PROCLAIM THAT AT SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE, GOD WOULD SEND A HUMAN LAMB TO DIE FOR THE SINS OF THE PEOPLE.
C) (READ ISAIAH 53)
D) (READ HEBREWS 10:1 – 5)
E) JOHN THE BAPTIST SAW JESUS COMING TOWARD HIM AND SAID JOHN1:29 “BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD, WHICH TAKETH AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD.”

V) HOW JESUS FULFILLED THE PASSOVER AS THE LAMB OF GOD.
A) JESUS ENTERED JERUSALEM TO CELEBRATE THE PASSOVER ON THE 10TH DAY OF NISSAN. IN JOHN 12:1 JESUS CAME TO BETHANY SIX DAYS BEFORE THE PASSOVER. SINCE PASSOVER WAS CELEBRATED ON THE 14TH THIS MEANS THAT JESUS CAME TO BETHANY ON THE 9TH, A SATURDAY.
B) THE NEXT DAY JESUS, SUNDAY THE 10TH OF NISSAN, JESUS RODE INTO JERUSALEM WITH PEOPLE WAVING PALM BRANCHES AND SAYING “HOSANNA, BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD…” (JOHN 12:12-13). THE LAMB OF GOD WAS SELECTED ON THE 10TH DAY OF NISSAN, JUST AS THE PASSOVER LAMB.
C) LIKEWISE JESUS WAS OBSERVED AND TESTED OVER THE NEXT FIVE DAYS BY THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND PILATE, JUST AS THE PASSOVER LAMB WAS KEPT AND OBSERVED. THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS ASKED HIM TRICK QUESTIONS HOPING HE WOULD GIVE A WRONG ANSWER WHICH THEY COULD USE AGAINST HIM.
D) IN THE END PILATE WASHED HIS HANDS SYMBOLICALLY AND SAID, “I FIND NO FAULT IN HIM.”
E) ALL OF THIS HAPPENED FROM THE 10TH THROUGH THE 14TH WHILE THE JEWS WERE CHECKING THEIR LAMBS FOR BLEMISHES PRIOR TO SACRIFICING THEM.
F) JESUS KNEW WHAT WAS TO HAPPEN, FOR THIS CAUSE HE HAD COME INTO THE WORLD. HE TOLD HIS DISCIPLES: MAT 26:2 YE KNOW THAT AFTER TWO DAYS IS THE FEAST OF THE PASSOVER, AND THE SON OF MAN IS BETRAYED TO BE CRUCIFIED.
G) JOSEPHUS A FIRST CENTURY HISTORIAN, SAID THAT 256,500 LAMBS HAD BEEN SACRIFICED IN JERUSALEM THE YEAR THAT JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED.
H) WITH THIS MANY LAMBS TO BE SACRIFICED THEY BEGAN TO PREPARE THEM AT 9:00 IN THE MORNING TO KILL THEM AT 3:00 SO THAT THEY COULD BE FINISHED BEFORE 6:00, WHICH BEGAN THE JEWISH SABBATH.
I) JESUS WAS NAILED TO HIS CROSS AT 9:00 IN THE MORNING; MARK 15:25 “AND IT WAS THE THIRD HOUR, AND THEY CRUCIFIED HIM.” THE THIRD HOUR JEWISH TIME IS 9:00 IN THE MORNING.
J) JESUS DIED AT 3:00 IN THE AFTERNOON “AND AT THE NINTH HOUR JESUS CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE, SAYING, ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI? WHICH IS, BEING INTERPRETED, MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME? …37 AND JESUS CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE, AND GAVE UP THE GHOST. “ (MARK 15:34,37) THE NINTH HOUR JEWISH TIME IS 3:00 IN THE AFTERNOON, WHEN THE KILLING BEGAN.
K) AS WITH THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE PASSOVER LAMB, NONE OF HIS BONES WERE BROKEN. THEY CAME TO BREAK HIS LEGS TO HASTEN HIS DEATH, BUT FOUND JESUS ALREADY DEAD. (JOHN 19:31-33, 36)
VI) CONCLUSION – 1PE 1:18 – 23 FORASMUCH AS YE KNOW THAT YE WERE NOT REDEEMED WITH CORRUPTIBLE THINGS, AS SILVER AND GOLD, FROM YOUR VAIN CONVERSATION RECEIVED BY TRADITION FROM YOUR FATHERS; 19 BUT WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, AS OF A LAMB WITHOUT BLEMISH AND WITHOUT SPOT: 20 WHO VERILY WAS FOREORDAINED BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, BUT WAS MANIFEST IN THESE LAST TIMES FOR YOU, 21 WHO BY HIM DO BELIEVE IN GOD, THAT RAISED HIM UP FROM THE DEAD, AND GAVE HIM GLORY; THAT YOUR FAITH AND HOPE MIGHT BE IN GOD. 22 SEEING YE HAVE PURIFIED YOUR SOULS IN OBEYING THE TRUTH THROUGH THE SPIRIT UNTO UNFEIGNED LOVE OF THE BRETHREN, SEE THAT YE LOVE ONE ANOTHER WITH A PURE HEART FERVENTLY: 23 BEING BORN AGAIN, NOT OF CORRUPTIBLE SEED, BUT OF INCORRUPTIBLE, BY THE WORD OF GOD, WHICH LIVETH AND ABIDETH FOREVER.

SCRIPTURES:
Heb 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
Heb 10:2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshipers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
Heb 10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
Heb 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
Heb 10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
Heb 10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
Heb 10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
Heb 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Heb 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Heb 10:11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
Heb 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;
Heb 10:13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
Heb 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.
Heb 10:15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
Heb 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
Heb 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Heb 10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
Heb 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Heb 10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
Heb 10:21 And having a high priest over the house of God;
