Feelings Can You Trust Them

FEELINGS CAN YOU TRUST THEM

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

1)      INTRODUCTION – DO YOU REMEMBER THAT SONG TITLED “FEELINGS”?   ONE OF THE LYRICS GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS: “FEELINGS, OH, OH, OH, FEELINGS; FEELINGS OF LOVE”.   YOU TEENAGES PROBABLY CAN RELATE TO THIS.  WE LAUGH ABOUT THIS BUT UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE MANY CHRISTIANS TRY TO NAVIGATE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE BY THEIR FEELINGS.   IF THEY WAKE UP AND IT IS A NICE DAY AND THEY FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEIR LIFE AND THE WORLD IN GENERAL, THAT MEANS GOD LOVES THEM AND IF IT IS SUNDAY, THEY MAY EVEN GO TO CHURCH AND PUT A DOLLAR IN THE OFFERING.   IF THEY DON’T FEEL GOOD ABOUT THINGS THAT MEANS THAT GOD DOESN’T LOVE THEM AND THEY WONDER, OFTEN OUT LOUD, WHERE GOD IS AND WHETHER THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS ALL THAT IT’S CRACKED UP TO BE.

2)      MANY PENTECOSTALS ARE TOO DEPENDENT UPON FEELINGS SO PENTECOSTALS MANY ARE RUNNING FROM SERVICE TO SERVICE AND CHURCH TO CHURCH TO GET ZAPPED, AND FALL OUT UNDER THE POWER, TO RECEIVE A PERSONAL PROPHECY OR THEY ARE CHASING SOME SPIRITUAL PHENOMENA BUT THEY WON’T MAKE A COMMITMENT TO A LOCAL CHURCH AND GET INVOLVED AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.   1 Cor 13:8-9: where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. .  IT IS GOOD TO FALL OUT UNDER THE POWER OF GOD BUT WHEN WE GET UP WE SHOULD JOIN A LOCAL CHURCH AND MAKE A COMMITMENT TO GET INVOLVED AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

A)    THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS GIVEN WAS TO GIVE US POWER TO BE HIS WITNESSES; TO SAVE THE LOST AND TO BUILD HIS CHURCH.  SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE NOT AN END IN THEMSELVES, BUT A MEANS TO AN END.

B)    SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE NOT EVEN A MEASURE OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY.   THE MEASURE OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY IS THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT AS GIVEN IN GALATIANS 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.

3)      THE BIBLE IS FULL OF EXAMPLES OF HUMAN FAILITY WHEN IT COMES TO EMOTIONS (THAT IS ONE OF THE MANY REASONS THAT IT IS SO BELIEVEABLE, IT TELLS THE WHOLE TRUTH, WARTS AND ALL.):

A)     ELIJAH THE PROPHET HAD BEEN USED IN SUCH AN EXTRAORDINARY WAY TO DEFEAT AND DESTROY THE PROPHETS OF BAAL BUT SHORTLY THEREAFTER HE FLED INTO THE WILDERNESS FROM QUEEN JEZEBEL.  HE BECAME SO DEPRESSED HE WANTED TO DIE. 1 Kings 19:3-4: Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”

B)    KING DAVID STRUGGLED WITH HIS EMOTIONS.  Ps 38:8-10  I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. 9 All my longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. 10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes.

C)    JOHN THE BAPTIST THE FORERUNNER OF CHRIST WAS PUT IN PRISION.  HE HAD BAPTIZED JESUS IN THE RIVER JORDAN AND SAW THE HOLY SPIRIT DESCEND UPON HIM, YET HE DOUBTED.  HE SENT HIS DISCIPLES TO JESUS TO ASK him, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” 4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. 6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.” Matt 11:2-6

D)    the apostle paul: “it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men. 10 We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. 12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.” 1 Cor 4:9-13

E)     AFTER JESUS CRUCIFIXION THE DISCIPLES WERE DISTRAUGHT AND CONFUSED.   THEY WERE HIDING WONDERING WHAT TO DO WHEN MARY CAME AND TOLD THEM THAT THE STONE HAD BEEN ROLLED AWAY. LATER PETER AND A GROUP OF THE DISCIPLES HAD GATHERED IN CANA OF GALILEE PETER SAID I’M GOING FISHING, THE OTHERS JOINED HIM AND THEY FISHED ALL NIGHT WITHOUT CATCHING ANTHING. John 21:1-3

4)      GOD DOESN’T GIVE UP ON US WHEN WE GET DISCOUAGED BUT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT discouragement and SELF-PITY DOES NOT GET THE JOB DONE AND LEADS TO SIN.   WE MUST PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD AND STAND UP AND FIGHT.

A)    DAVID SAID Ps 43:5 WHY are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

B)    THE PROPHET HABAKUK SAID “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. 19 The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.”  Hab 3:17-19

C)    AS JESUS WAS DYING, HANGING ON THE CROSS IN EXCRUCIATING PAIN HE DID NOT THINK OF HIMSELF BUT SAID “FATHER, FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO.”

D)    PAUL AND SILAS WERE IMPRISIONED, AT THE MIDNIGHT HOUR THEY BEGIN TO SING AND GOD DELIVERED THEM.

5)      WHAT ARE SOME PRACTICAL THINGS THAT WE CAN DO TO PULL OURSELVES OUT OF THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF DISCOURAGEMENT AND SELF-PITY?

A)    READ GOD’S WORD AND LET IT SPEAK TO YOU AND DECLARE THE GOD’S FAITHFULNESS IN SPITE OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

B)    REPENT IF NECESSARY AND ASK GOD’S FORGIVENESS. REFUSE TO GIVE IN TO MURMURING AND COMPLAINING.  WHEN WE MURMUR AND COMPLAIN WE ARE REALLY SAYING THAT GOD IS UNFAIR.  WE ARE ACCUSING GOD.

C)    REMIND GOD OF HIS PROMISES AND ASK HIM WITH A RIGHT ATITUDE.

D)    GET BUSY HELPING IN THE CHURCH AND HELPING OTHERS; TAKE THE FOCUS OFF YOURSELF.

E)     WAIT FOR THE ANSWER.

a)    Phil 4:5-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

b)    2 Peter 1:3-4: His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

c)    Ps 37:4-6: Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: 6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

d)     Phil 2:1-4: If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

e)     John 15:16-17: You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

6)      CONCLUSION – A PART OF THE TRAINING OF A JET PILOT, PARTICULARLY THOSE THAT ARE TRAINING TO FLY JET FIGHTERS, IS TO TRAIN THE PILOT TO TRUST HIS INSTRUMENTS.  CERTAIN MANUVERS, PARTICULARLY THOSE THAT SUBJECT THE PILOT TO HIGH “G” FORCES MAY LEAVE THE PILOT DISORIENTED SO THAT UP SEEMS DOWN AND DOWN SEEMS UP.   WHEN THIS CONDITION OCCURS, THE PILOT HAS A CHOICE, EITHER TO TRUST HIS INSTINCTS OR TRUST HIS AIRCRAFT’S INSTRUMENTS. MANY A YOUNG PILOT HAS BURIED HIS AIRCRAFT IN THE GROUND AT HIGH SPEEDS, GOING NEARLY STRAIGHT DOWN, WHEN HE THOUGHT THE AIRCRAFT WAS CLIMBING.   MANY THAT CALL THEMSELVES CHRISTIANS, FLYING BY THE SEAT OF THEIR PANTS, RATHER THAN TRUSTING AND OBEYING GOD.  HE HAS GIVEN US EVERYTHING THAT WE NEED FOR LIFE AND GODLINESS.   NO ONE PROMISED IT WOULD BE EASY.  WE LIKE ABRAHAM ARE PILGRIMS HERE, LOOKING FOR A CITY WHO BUILDER AND MAKER IS GOD.
