It is Finished

IT IS FINISHED

             (Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)         INTRODUCTION:  in his dying moments Jesus uttered the words:  “ IT IS FINISHED”,  then he bowed His head and gave up His spirit. (John 19:30).  these words ECHOs THROUGH THE CENTURIES, ETERNALLY SIGNIFICANT AND profoundly MEANINGFUL when you contemplate His AMAZING life AND SACIFICIAL DEATH.  He taught with DIVINE authority, performed miracles: healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, caused the lame to walk and raised the dead.  He did what no man has ever done.   HIS LIFE WAS ONE OF COMPASSION, KINDNESS demonstrated  by THE MIRACLE WORKING POWER OF GOD –  yet they HATED HIM AND THEY crucified Him.   reading: John 19:1-6, 14-19, 23-30 (NIV) text:  “IT IS FINISHED.”  THESE WORDS spoken to the father can NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.   WHAT IS THE MEANING THIS ANGUISHED CRY that Jesus PRAYED at the moment of his death?

II)        IT WAS A CRY OF COMPLETION – THERE WOULD BE NO MORE ACCUSATIONS AND PERSECUTION.   THERE WOULD BE NO MORE BEATING, NO MORE NAILS, NO MORE WHIPPINGS, NO MORE HUMILIATION, NO MORE SUFFERING.  HE WAS CRUCIFIED ALTHOUGH INNOCENT OF ANY WRONG DOING.  HE WAS CRUCIFIED BETWEEN TWO THIEVES, BUT IT WAS OVER; HIS SUFFERING AND PAIN WAS OVER.  IT WAS FINISHED!

1.  HE HAD FINISHED THE TASK OF REVEALING THE FATHER’s HEART

John 1:14 (NIV):: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. NIV

John 14:9-10: Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. …The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

2.  HE HAD FULFILLED ALL THE PROPHIECIES ABOUT HIMSELF

Isa 11:1 – 2 (KJV):  And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:  And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

REV 5:5 SPEAKS OF HIM AS THE “LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH, THE ROOT OF DAVID…” THAT “HE HAS TRIUMPHED”

3.   HE LIVED A SINLESS LIFE QUALIFYING AS THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB OF GOD

1 Peter 2:22 (KJV) “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” “WE WERE EYE WITNESSES OF HIS MAJESTY”

1 John 3:5 (NIV): …he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in Him is no sin.

JohN 1:29 (kjv):  JOHN SAW HIM AND SAID “BEHOLD the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”.

Rev 5:9 (KJV): THE 4 & 20 ELDERS AND THE 4 LIVING CREATURES WHICH WERE BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD FELL DOWN AND WORHIPPED HIMAnd they sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

HE COMPLETED THE WORK THAT HE WAS SENT TO DO.

JohN 9:4 (kjv)  I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

John 17:4 (KJV): I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

JohN 12:27 (KJV):  “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.

C.   Isa 53:5 (NIV): But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.  NIV

D. Ps 22:14-16 (NIV): I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; …15 My strength is dried up…, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; …. a band of evil men encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet.

IV. IT WAS A CRY OF CONSECRATION

FROM ALL OUTWARD APPEAREANCES IT SEEMs TO BE TOTAL AND UTTER DEFEAT.  BUT, NO, IT WAS A CRY OF CONQUEST, A CRY OF VICTORY.

HE HAD OVERCOME ALL OPPOSITION!  HE HAD TRIUMPHED OVER THE WORLD, THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL.  THE WORLD, EVEN HIS DISCIPLES, WANTED TO MAKE HIM KING, TO DETOUR HIM FROM THE CROSS.  BUT, HE WOULD NOT ACCEPT IT.  HE SET HIS FACE AS FLINT TOWARD THE CROSS; NOTHING WOULD DETER HIM.  HE CAME TO SUFFER AND TO DIE FOR THE SINS OF THE WORLD – THIS WAS THE WILL OF THE FATHER; THIS WAS WHY HE CAME.

SATAN HAD TEMPTED HIM TO BYPASS THE CROSS FOR THE GLORIES OF THIS WORLD. (MATT 4:1-11)

1 Cor 2:7 (NIV): None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Col 2:13-15 (NIV): He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

1.   HE FAITHFULLY FOLLOWED his FATHER’S DIRECTIVES.  he was faithful.

2.  Phil 2:6-8 (NIV): Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross!

3.  Heb 2:9-10 (KJV): But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.  10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.

4. Heb 5:8-10 (NIV): Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him …

V.  IT WAS A CRY OF CONQUEST

IV. IT WAS A CRY OF CHALLENGE

1.   DURING HIS MINISTRY UPON EARTH HE INVESTED HIMSELF IN HIS DISCIPLES AND FOLLOWERS – IT WOULD FALL UPON THEM TO COMPLETE THE WORK THAT HE BEGAN.  HIS MINISTRY UPON EARTH WAS FINISHED – HIS MINISTRY IN HEAVEN, SITTING ON THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER WAS JUST BEGINNING.

(a)     Mark 16:15 (NIV): “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

(b)     Matt 28:18-20 (NIV): “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

(c)     1 Peter 2:21 (KJV):  To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

(d)     1 John 4:4 (KJV): Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

2)  HE CHALLENGES US TO TAKE UP OUR CROSS AND FOLLOW HIM Mark 8:34-36 (NIV): “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? NIV

4) HE CHALLENGES US TO TAKE OUR SHARE OF PERSECUTION

A)   2 Tim 3:11-12 (niv): In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted…

B)  Acts 20:22-24 (NIV): “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me-the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.

5) HE CHALLENGES US OVERCOME THE WORLD

A) John 16:33 (NIV): In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

B)  1 John 5:3-5 (NIV): This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he  who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

VI)     CONCLUSION: Hebrews 12:2 (KJV): SAYS Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  MANY SCORN AND DENY THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS – THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF THEM IN 1 Cor 1:18: … the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  AS A MAN HE DIED – AS GOD, HE WILL REIGN UNTIL “HE HATH PUT ALL ENEMIES UNDER HIS FEET.”  1 COR. 5:25

THIS EASTER MORNING WE CELEBRATE THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST AND HIS VICTORY OVER DEATH, HELL AND THE GRAVE.  THIS MORNING HIS BODY IS NOT IN A TOMB.    HE IS SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER AS OUR HIGH PRIEST, OUR INTERCESSOR AND OUR ADVOCATE but HIS CRY “IT IS FINISHED” IS ECHos within our spirits, not it is our turn. HOW will we respond?
