Knowing God (part 2)

KNOWING GOD (Part 2)

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

  1. I.            INTRODUCTION    LAST WEEK IN PART 1 OF THIS SERIES WE SAID THAT THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO KNOW GOD ABOUT GOD BUT RELATIVELY FEW THAT THAT EVER COME TO “KNOW GOD”.   WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT GOD – GOD HAS CHOSEN TO REVEAL ON HIS OWN TERMS.  WE CAN KNOW ABOUT GOD WITHOUT HAVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. WE COME TO KNOW GOD THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST.  KNOWING ABOUT GOD DOES NOT CHANGE US KNOWING GOD CHANGES US.  SUMMARIZING SOME IMPORTANT POINTS OF PART 1:
  • KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS INTENTIONALLY SUPRESSED BY UNGODLY (ROM 1:21-23)

ü  ALTHOUGH THEY KNEW GOD THEY GLORIFIED HIM NOT AS GOD

ü  THEY WERE UNTHANKFUL TO HIM FOR HIS CREATION, FOR THEIR VERY LIVES

ü  THEY SUPRESSED THE TRUTH OF HIS POWER & GLORY IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS

ü  ALTHOUGH THEY CLAIMED TO BE WISE THEY BECAME FOOLS

ü  THEY DID NOT RETAIN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD THAT WAS GIVEN THEM

ü  THEIR MINDS & CONSCIENCES HAVE BEEN DEFILED & CORRUPTED (TIT 1:15-16)

  • GOD’S WRATH RESERVED THOSE SUPPRESS KNOWLEDGE GOD (ROM 1:24-28)

ü “THE WRATH OF GOD IS BEING REVEALED AGAINST ALL GODLESS AND WICKEDNESS OF MEN WHO HOLD THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS” (18 NIV)

ü “THEY DID NOT THINK IT WORTHWILE TO RETAIN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD (28 NIV)

ü GIVEN OVER TO THEIR SINFUL DESIRES & DEGRADING OF BODIES WITH ONE ANOTHER

ü THEY ARE GIVEN OVER TO A DEPRAVED MIND

  • THEY ARE FILLED WITH ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS (ROM 1:29-32)

ü THEY INVENT NEW WAYS TO COMMIT EVIL

ü THEY NOT ONLY DO THESE THINGS; APPROVE OF THOSE WHO PRACTICE THESE THINGS

  • THIS WEEK I WANT TO CONTRAST THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO REFUSE THE KNOWLEDGE OF  GOD AND THOSE THAT HAVE COME KNOW AND LOVE               GOD:  TEXT:  DEUT 6:5-9  (KJV)

 II.                                     WE ARE TO LOVE GOD WITH ALL OUR HEART, SOUL & MIGHT (5)

  • QUOTED BY JESUS (MATT 22:37)
  • 3 ASPECTS OF OUR BEING: SPIRIT, SOUL & BODY; THE QUESTION IS HOW DO WE DO THIS?
  • IT COMES THROUGH KNOWING GOD…TO KNOW GOD IS TO LOVE GOD:  1John 4:7, 8  Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

III.                                    WHEN WE LOVE GOD IN THIS WAY IT WILL BE EVIDENT TO ALL

  • HIS WORD WILL BE HIDDEN IN OUR HEARTS (6),  PS 119:11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
  • WE WILL TEACH HIS WORD TO OUR CHILDREN (7) , 1CH 16:15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
  • GOD’S WORD WILL BE A TOPIC OF OUR DAILY CONVERSATION (7)
  • GOD WORD WILL BE THE FOCUS OF OUR PUBLIC LIFE & TESTIMONY (8,9)

 IV.            GOD’S BLESSINGS ARE RESERVED FOR THOSE WHO KNOW HIM & LOVE HIM

  • Jer 29:11 NIV: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
  • Pro 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding; Psa 103:17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him  (fear speaks of moral reverence in recognitions of his holiness and his command that we should be holy; he is not like us but we are to become like him)
  • Psa 103:17  But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
  1. V.            CONCLUSION – SOME DAY THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD WILL FILL THE EARTH: Hab 2:14 (KJV) “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the gl ory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”   THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GLORY OF THE LORD:  HIS HOLINESS, HIS GOODNESS, HIS LOVE FOR US WILL FILL ALL THE EARTH, FILLING EVERY VOID, EVERY CREVICE, EVERY CRANNY OF OUR LIFE, OUR SOCIETY. THE GREATEST JOY OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS KNOWING GOD, AS REVEALED IN HIS SON, THE LORD JESUS.  NOT JUST KNOWING ABOUT GOD BUT KNOWING GOD.   PAUL SAID:  Phi 3:10 (NIV)  I want to know Christ and the power of his RESURRECTION… WE COME TO KNOW GOD THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS SON JESUS.   WHEN WE ACCEPT JESUS AS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR THE SPIRIT OF GOD INDWELLS US.  HE IS THE COMFORTER, THE CONSELOR, AND THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH.  AS WE OBEY THE TRUTH HE PROGRESSIVELY REVEALS MORE AND MORE TO US.  WE COME TO “KNOW GOD” AS WE NEVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE.  THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD GIVES US A HOPE AND A FUTURE IN HEAVEN WITH HIM.   DO YOU KNOW ABOUT GOD OR DO YOU KNOW HIM?  IF YOU KNOW HIM HE IS CHANGING YOU!

1Jo 4:7, 8  Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

1Jo 4:11  Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

Deu 6:5 – 9  And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Jer 24:7  And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.

Jer 9:3,6  And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD. 4  Take ye heed every one of his neighbor  and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will walk with slanders. 5  And they will deceive every one his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity. 6  Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD.

Jer 31:33,34  But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34  And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor  and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Rom 1:18,25 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator–who is forever praised. Amen.

Psa 19:1,3 A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.

Rom 1:28 – 32 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Tit 1:15  Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16  They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

1Co 2:14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Hos 4:6  My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Joh 14:6 – 10 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

2Ti 3:7  Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Rom 10:2,3  For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3  For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

1Jo 4:8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Hab 2:14  For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

 Phi 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

 1Jo 2:3  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 2:5  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

 Psa 103:17, 18  But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children; 18  To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do

Psa 115:13, 14  He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great. 14  The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children.
