Knowing God (part one)

KNOWING GOD

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)        INTRODUCTION –IN THE NEW TESTAMENT THERE ARE TWO WORDS FOR KNOWLEDGE: “GNOSIS” WHICH MEANS KNOWLEDGE AND “EPIGINOSKO” WHICH IS TWO WORDS COMBINED “EPI” AND “GINOSKO” WHICH MEANS “FULL KNOWLEDGE”.   THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO KNOW GOD ABOUT GOD BUT RELATIVELY FEW THAT THAT EVER COME TO “KNOW GOD”.  WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT GOD – GOD HAS CHOSEN TO REVEAL ON HIS OWN TERMS.  WE CAN KNOW ABOUT GOD WITHOUT HAVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM, BUT WE COME TO KNOW GOD PROGRESSIVELY THROUGH AN ONGOING RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST.  KNOWING ABOUT GOD DOES NOT CHANGE US KNOWING GOD CHANGES US.

II)      TEXT:  ROM 1:16-24 (KJV)

III) PAUL WAS NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL (GOD’S GOOD NEWS) (16, 17)

  • IF WE BELIEVE GOD’S GOOD NEWS GOD’S POWER IS RELEASED TO SAVE US FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR SIN: DEATH FOLLOWED BY ETERNAL DAMNATION
  • “IT IS APPOINTED ONTO MAN ONCE TO DIE AND AFTER THAT THE JUDGEMENT”
  • THE GOSPEL REVEALS THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD & THE LOVE GOD
  • THIS REVELATION OF GOD IS PROGRESSIVE: FROM FAITH TO FAITH
  • WE ARE SAVED THROUGH FAITH AND THIS NOT OF OUR SELVES…
  • BUT THEN WE LIVE BY FAITH: “THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH”
  • THE LIFE OF FAITH WILL PRODUCE THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT AND THE WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (GOOD WORKS)

IV)  THE WRATH OF GOD IS REVEALED AGAINST ALL UNGODLINESS (18)

  • AGAINST MEN WHO HOLD (KNOW) THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS
  • MEN WHO HAVE RECEIVED THE GOOD NEWS & CHOSE TO GO ON LIVING IN SIN
  • “HOW SHALL WE ESCAPE IF WE IGNORE SUCH A GREAT SALVATION (HEB 2:3)

V)  THERE IS A UNIVERSAL KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AVAILABLE TO ALL MEN (19,20)

  • THE INVISIBLE GOD IS REVEALED IN THEM (THEIR BODIES) AND THROUGH HIS VISIBLE CREATION
  • HIS SUPERNATURAL POWER, HIS AMAZING LOVE FOR US, DIVINE NATURE
  • The HEAVENS declare the GLORY of GOD; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. (PS 19:1); “SO THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE”

VI)   KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS INTENTIONALLY SUPRESSED BY UNGODLY (21-23)

  • THEY WERE NOT BORN UNBELIEVERS; THEY BECAME UNBELIEVERS; THEIR HEARTS WERE HARDENED; ALTHOUGH THEY KNEW GOD THEY GLORIFIED HIM NOT AS GOD
  • THEY WERE UNTHANKFUL TO HIM FOR HIS CREATION, FOR THEIR VERY LIVES
  • THEY SUPRESSED THE TRUTH OF HIS POWER & GLORY IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS
  • ALTHOUGH THEY CLAIMED TO BE WISE THEY BECAME FOOLS
  • GOD GAVE THEM OVER TO THE SINFUL DESIRES OF THEIR HEARTS (ROM 1:28-32)
  • THEY DID NOT RETAIN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD (THAT WAS GIVEN THEM)
  • THEIR MINDS & CONSCIENCES HAVE BEEN DEFILED & CORRUPTED (TIT 1:15-16)

VII) THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS REVEALED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD (1COR 2:12-16)

  • WE  HAVE RECEIVED THE SPIRIT OF GOD WHEN WE ACCEPTED CHRIST
  • THE SPIRIT OF GOD IS THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH WHICH REVEALS TO US WHAT GOD HAS FREELY GIVEN FOR US TO KNOW (THERE IS MUCH MORE TO KNOW)
  • natural MAN (PSUCHIKOS – MAN LED BY HIS APPETITITES) DOES NOT RECEIVE the things of the Spirit of God; THE THINGS OF GOD ARE foolishness to him
  •  he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
  •  WORLDLY KNOWLEDGE STANDS IN OPPOSITION TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
  • WORLDLY KNOWLEDGE PUFFS US UP WITH PRIDE, INDEPENDENCE: Exo 5:2 Pharaoh:  Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I KNOW not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
  • THERE IS AN AWFUL PENALTY FOR NOT KNOWING GOD (ROM 1:28 )
  • WITHOUT THE KNOWEDGE OF GOD: THERE IS NO TRUTH, NO MERCY, VIOLENCE FILLS THE EARTH.  IT AFFECTS EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING.  (HOS 4:1-3 NIV)

VIII) THE KNOWLEDGE & GLORY OF GOD IS PROGRESSIVELY REVEALED TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE AND OBEY (LIVE A SPIRIT CONTROLLED LIFE)

  •  GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS SON &HIS WORD, THE BIBLE WHICH REVEALS HIS SON (HEB 1:1-3)
  •  GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS HOLY SPIRIT, (THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH) JohN 15:26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the SPIRIT of TRUTH who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
  • IN THIS LIFE WE KNOW IN PART (1COR 13:9-12)
  • SOME HAVE FORM OF GODLINESS BUT DENY HIS POWER (2TIM 3:5- 7)
  • SOME HAVE ZEAL FOR GOD BUT NOT ACCORDING TO KNOWLEDGE (ROM 10:2,3 )
  • SOME CLAIM TO KNOW GOD BUT DO NOT MANIFEST HIS LOVE: WHOEVER DOES NOT LOVE DOES NOT KNOW GOD, FOR GOD IS LOVE (1JOHN 4:8 NIV)
  • THERE IS BATTLE FOR THE MIND (OUR THOUGHT LIFE) (2COR 10:3-5)

IX)    GOD’S  WRATH RESERVED FOR THOSE WHO SUPPRESS  THE KNOWLEDGE GOD (18, 25 – 32)

  • “THE WRATH OF GOD IS BEING REVEALED AGAINST ALL GODLESS AND WICKEDNESS OF MEN WHO HOLD THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS” (18 NIV)
  • “THEY DID NOT THINK IT WORTHWILE TO RETAIN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD (28 NIV)
  • THEY ARE GIVEN OVER TO THEIR SINFUL DESIRES
  • DEGRADING OF THEIR BODIES WITH ONE ANOTHER
  • THEY ARE GIVEN OVER TO A DEPRAVED AND PERVERSE MIND
  • THEY INVENT NEW WAYS TO COMMIT EVIL

X)      CONCLUSION – SOME DAY THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD WILL FILL THE EARTH: Hab 2:14 (KJV) “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the gl ory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”   THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GLORY OF THE LORD:  HIS HOLINESS, HIS GOODNESS, HIS LOVE FOR US WILL FILL ALL THE EARTH, FILLING EVERY VOID, EVERY CREVICE, EVERY CRANNY OF OUR LIFE, OUR SOCIETY. THE GREATEST JOY OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS KNOWING GOD, AS REVEALED IN HIS SON, THE LORD JESUS.  NOT JUST KNOWING ABOUT GOD BUT KNOWING GOD.    Phi 3:10, 11 (NIV)  I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. WE COME TO KNOW GOD THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS SON JESUS.   WHEN WE ACCEPT JESUS AS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR THE SPIRIT OF GOD INDWELLS US.  HE IS THE COMFORTER, THE CONSELOR, AND THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH.  AS WE OBEY THE TRUTH HE PROGRESSIVELY REVEALS MORE AND MORE TO US.  WE COME TO “KNOW GOD” AS WE NEVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE.  THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD GIVES US A HOPE AND A FUTURE IN HEAVEN WITH HIM.   DO YOU KNOW ABOUT GOD OR DO YOU KNOW HIM?  IF YOU KNOW HIM HE IS CHANGING YOU!

Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

Rom 1:19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Rom 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Rom 1:22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

Rom 1:23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Rom 1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

Rom 1:25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator–who is forever praised. Amen.

Psa 19:1 A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Psa 19:2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.

Psa 19:3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.

Rom 1:28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

Rom 1:29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,

Rom 1:30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;

Rom 1:31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Rom 1:32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Tit 1:15  Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Tit 1:16  They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

1Co 2:14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Exo 5:2  And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

Hos 4:1  Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

Hos 4:2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

Hos 4:3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

Hos 4:6  My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Joh 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Joh 14:7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Joh 14:8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Joh 14:9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Joh 14:10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

1Co 13:9  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

1Co 13:10  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

1Co 13:11  When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

1Co 13:12  For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

2Ti 3:5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

2Ti 3:6  For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

2Ti 3:7  Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Rom 10:2  For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

Rom 10:3  For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

1Jo 4:8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Hab 2:14  For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

Phi 3:7 – 9  But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Phi 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

1Jo 2:3  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

1Jo 2:4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1Jo 2:5  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

2Co 5:16  Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.

2Co 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2Co 5:18  And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
