Lessons from the Life of Abraham (part 4)

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF ABRAHAM

PART 4:  GROWING IN THE FAITH – LEARNING TO SERVE GOD & TO SERVE OTHERS

( Pastor Lee Jackson FFWC)

1)    INTRODUCTION – IN OUR FIRST MESSAGE ON THIS SERIES WE SPOKE ABOUT THE CALL OF ABRAHAM AND WHAT IT MEANS TO CHRISTIANS TODAY: 1) THE CALL OF GOD IS GOD’S SOVREIGN INITIATIVE, 2) THE CALL OF GOD REQUIRES WE LEAVE OUR PAST BEHIND, 3) THE CALL OF GOD DEMANDS OBEDIENCE, AND 4) RESPONDING TO THE CALL OF GOD BRINGS BLESSING TO US AND OUR FAMILIES AND ALL OUR RELATIONSHIPS.

IN THE SECOND MESSAGE DEALING WITH THE LIFE OF ABRAHAM WE FOUND OUT THE EVEN THOUGHT WE ARE CALLED WE DON’T ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME:  1) WE GET INTO TROUBLE COMES WHEN WE TAKE MATTERS INTO OUR OWN HANDS, 2) MATERIAL BLESSING IS NOT ALWAYS AND INDICATION OF GOD’S APPROVAL AS MUCH AS IT IS A MEASURE OF GOD’S GRACE, AND FINALLY 3) GOD DOESN’T GIVE UP ON US IN SPITE OF OUR FAILURES OR OUR STUPIDITY.

IN THE THIRD MESSAGE DEALING WITH THE LIFE OF ABRAHAM GROWING IN THE FAITH – LEARNING TO FOLLOW GOD WHOLLY: 1) WE FOUND OUT WHEN WE FOLLOW GOD WE LEARN TO BUILD ALTARS, MILESTONES OR MARKERS THAT WE CAN COME BACK TO WHEN OUR FAITH WAIVERS,  2) WHEN WE FOLLOW GOD WE LET GOD CHOSE OUR PARTNERS FOR THE JOURNEY, AND 3) WHEN WE FOLLOW GOD WE GIVE UP OUR RIGHTS.

IN TODAY’S MESSAGE WE SEEN ABRAM, AS WE HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM PREVIOUSLY.   HE HAS GROWN IN MATURITY IN HIS WALK WITH THE LORD AND IS READY TO DO BATTLE AGAINST THE ENEMY.

2)    AS WE GROW IN GOD, WE COME TO REALIZE THAT WE ARE OUR BROTHERS KEEPER.  (GEN 14:1-4,8-17)

A)   WHEN LOT AND HIS HOUSEHOLD WERE TAKEN CAPTIVE ABRAM DID NOT HESITATE TO GO AFTER HIM WITHOUT CONSIDERING THE RISK TO HIMSELF.

B)   ABRAM TOOK 318 TRAINED MEN, BORN IN HIS HOUSEHOLD, AND WENT IN PURSUIT OF THESE KINGS AS FAR AS DAN (ESTIMATE 150 MILES).

C)   JESUS TOLD THE STORY OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN IN LUKE CHAPTER 10…

D)   Mat 25:40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

3)    AS WE GROW IN GOD, WE DISCOVER THAT GOD FIGHTS OUR BATTLES.

 (GEN. 14:18 – 20)

A)   ABRAM DEFEATED KEDORLAOMER AND THE KINGS ALLIED WITH HIM AND BROUGHT BACK THOSE THAT HAVE WERE TAKEN CAPTIVE ALONG WITH THE SPOILS THAT HAD BEEN TAKEN FROM THEM.

B)   Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

C)   2Co 10:4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

4)    AS WE GROW IN GOD, WE LEARN TO GIVE TO GOD WHAT BELONGS TO GOD.

A)   Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,

B)   Melchizedek blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.

C)   HE WAS THE A PRIEST OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PEACE.   WRITER OF HEBREWS REVEALS MORE ABOUT Melchizedek IN HEBREWS 7:1 – 4.

D)   Heb 7:3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever.

E)   ABRAM KNEW THAT THE VICTORY BELONGED TO GOD.  GOD HAD GIVEN HIM THE VICTORY AND HE PAID TITHES TO MELCHIZEDEK OF ALL THAT HE HAD.

F)   THE GLORY BELONGS TO GOD AND OUR TITHE BELONGS TO GOD.

5)    AS WE GROW IN GOD, WE COME TO UNDERSTAND THAT GOD ALONE IS OUR SOURCE. (GEN. 14:21-24)

A)   THE KING OF SODOM OFFERS ABRAM THE GOODS THAT ABRAM WAS RETURNING TO THE PEOPLE OF SODOM.

B)   ABRAM REFUSED THE SEEMINGLY GENEROUS OFFER:  Gen 14:23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the thong of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’

C)   I BELIEVE THAT ABRAM SAID THIS BECAUSE HE HAD COME TO KNOW THAT GOD WAS HIS SOURCE AND THAT GOD DESERVED THE GLORY.

D)   AS WE GROW IN GOD, WE TOO WILL UNDERSTAND THAT GOD IS THE SOURCE OF OUR HEALTH AND OUR WEALTH AND WE TOO WILL BE SURE TO GIVE HIM THE THANKS AND PRAISE.

6)    CONCLUSION:  THE CHRISTIAN WALK BEGINS LIKE ABRAM WITH THE CALL OF GOD.  THE CALL TO SALVATION, THE CALL TO SERVICE AND FINAL CALL TO GO AND LIVE WITH HIM FOR ALL ETERNITY.  SISTER HENSON RECEIVED THAT FINAL CALL A WEEK AGO SATURDAY.   THE CALL TO SERVICE BEGINS WITH RECOGNITION THAT WE ARE OUR BROTHER’S KEEPER – WE SERVE GOD, IN PART, BY SERVING OTHERS.  THIS WILL LEAD TO BATTLES AND CONFLICT.   GOD WILL FIGHT OUR BATTLES, IF HE LED US INTO THAT BATTLE AND HE WILL GIVE US THE VICTORY.   WE ALSO COME TO UNDERSTAND THAT GOD ALONE IS THE SOURCE OF OUR LIFE, OUR STRENGTH AND OUR SUPPLY.  FINALLY, IT IS UP TO US TO GIVE TO GOD THAT WHICH BELONGS TO HIM: OUR WORSHIP, WHICH INCLUDES OUR TITHES AND FREE WILL OFFERINGS.
