Life Lessons from Peter (part 1)

LIFE LESSONS FROM PETER (PART 1)

 (Pastor Lee Jackson FFWC)

 I)                    INTRODUCTION – 1st peter written 60 – 63, just before Rome burned in 64 ad and Nero blamed it on the Christians and began the slaughter of Christians. The purpose to of this letter is to provide beleaguered, scattered, persecuted believers an eternal perspective on this life and eternal life given to them by God, through believing on Christ.  Persecution and suffering will cause either growth or bitterness in the Christian life depending upon our perspective.  We will see that our perspective affects all of our relationships: how we deal with authority, government, our employer, our spouse, our church family in our study of the book of 1st & 2nd Peter.   TEXT: 1PETER CHAPTER 1 (niv)

II)      GREETINGS TO THE ELECT (chosen of god) (1-2)

A)      GOD’S ELECT YET STRANGERS AND PILGRIMS IN THE WORLD (1)

B)       CHOSEN ACCORDING TO THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD (1) YET SUFFERING EXTREME PERSECUTION, THIS WOULD GET WORSE.

C)        THEY WOULD BE HUNTED LIKE ANIMALS AND FED TO THE LIONS FOR ENTERTAINMENT.

III)    THE 1ST PART OF OUR CALLING & ELECTION IS TO HEIRS OF SALVATION (3-12)

A)      we have a LIVING HOPE

1)       He has given us new birth; we are a new creation:

2)       old things have passed away behold all things are become new

3)       god began the restoration with us: later new heavens & new earth

4)       because Jesus raised from the dead we have a living hope

5)       the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is working in us

6)       we also have an inheritance that will not perish, spoil or disappear

7)       PAUL  “set your affection on things above NOT ON THINGS OF THIS EARTH

8)       thru faith we are shielded by god’s power until our salvation is complete(5).  nothing happens to us that god does not allow.

B)       OUR faith is more precious than gold

1)       our faith is refined (purified) by the fire of affliction: genuine remains

2)       human presumptive faith goes up in smoke

3)       genuine faith bring praise, glory and honor to Jesus at coming

4)       faith: the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen

5)       we love him though we have not seen him. remember what Jesus told thomas when thomas put his fingers into Jesus wounds: blessed are they which have not seen, yet believe

6)       genuine faith results in inexpressible joy:  the world didn’t give it to us and the world can’t take it away…

C)       the prophets saw our salvation from afar off AND WERE AMAZED

1)       SPIRIT REVEALED IT TO THEM; GRACE OF GOD AVAILABLE TO US AMAZED THEM

2)       GOD HAS ONE CONTIGUOUS PLAN; HE DIDN’T CHANGE HIS MIND; CHRIST B/F CREATION OF THE WORLD (20)

3)       THEY TRIED TO FIND OUT TIMING AND CIRCUMSTANCES OF SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST AND THE GLORIES THAT WOULD FOLLOW (11)

4)       THEY SPOKE OF THE THINGS WHICH NOT HAVE BEEN PREACHED TO US

5)       THEY WERE NOT SERVING THEMSELVES BUT US THE BENEFICIARIES OF SALVATION

6)       EVEN ANGELS LONGED TO SEE AND UNDERSTAND THESE THINGS (12)

IV)     CONCLUSION – PETER CONCLUDES THIS 1ST CHAPTER REMINDING US THAT WE WERE NOT BORN AGAIN OF PERISHABLE SEED BUT IMPERISHABLE, THE LIVING AND ENDURING WORD OF GOD (23-25).  THIS REMINDS ME OF THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER THAT JESUS TOLD.   THE SEED IS THE WORD OF GOD; THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH.
