Life Lessons from Peter (part 5)

LIFE LESSONS FROM 1ST PETER (PART 5)

(Pastor Lee Jackson FFWC)

introduction – WE LIVE IN A DAY IN WHICH REBELLION AGAINST AUTHORITY IS COMMON PLACE AND EVEN CELEBRATED.   we and our children are exposed to it in the media, in our schools, in our colleges & universities.  it is ingrained in our culture.  it was prophecied in scripture:  2Ti 3:1-5:   This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

WHEN THE RULE OF LAW BREAKS DOWN ANARCHY, RIOTING, LOOTING AND MURDEROUS RAMPAGES BECOME COMMON PLACE.  democracy gives way to anarchy and anarchy to depotism & dictatorships.

TEXT:  1ST PETER 2:13-16 (nkjv)

1Pe 2:13 – 16: we are to Submit ourselves to authority for the Lord’s sake

  • romans 13:1-7 (kjv)
    • WE SUBMIT TO AUTHORITIES WhETHER WE VOTED FOR THEM OR NOT, WhETHER WE AGREE WITH THEM OR NOT
    • WHEN WE DISRESPECT AUTHORITY IN FRONT OF OUR KIDS WE ARE DOING THEM A GREAT DISSERVICE.  WE WONDER WHY THEY GET INTO TROUBLE at school and WITH the police.

1Pe 2:18 – 20 (nkjv): even Slaves are TO SUBMIT themselves to THEIR MASTERS with all respect,

  • SLAVERY IS A TERRIBLE THING, BUT THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY WAS A RESULT OF A DEEPER PROBLEM, A SIN PROBLEM.
    • JESUS DIED TO MAKE MEN FREE BUT NOT just FREE FROM SLAVERY but FREE FROM SIN which brought about slavery.
    • OUR GREATEST ENEMY IS NOT MEN AND WHAT THEY CAN DO TO US BUT OUR FLESH, OUR OLD SIN NATURE & SATAN THE ONE WHO CONTINUES TO DECEIVE US USING THE SAME TATICS HE USED ON adam & EVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN.

1 Pe 22 – 25(nkjv): jesus is our example in how to submit to authority

  • “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”
    • WHEN HE SUFFERED, HE MADE NO THREATS, NOR DID HE RETALIATE
    • ENTRUSTED HIMSELF TO GOD’S WILL & GOD’S PLAN.
    • “render onto ceaser that which is ceaser’s and onto god…”
    • WE ARE SO QUICK TO RETALIATE & JUSTIFY OURSELVES; SO QUICK TO ASSERT OUR RIGHTS: WHEN SOMEONE DOES US WRONG
    • IT WAS GOD’S PLAN THAT CHRIST SHOULD SUFFER: Isa 53:10: Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
    • it is god’s plan that we should take our share of suffering and hardship.
