Life Lessons from Peter (part 7)

(Pastor Lee Jackson FFWC)

introduction – IN PART 5, LAST WEEK, WE BEGAN RECEIVING SOME VERY PRACTICAL TEACHING PETER ON “LEARNING TO SUBMIT TO AUTHORITY”.   in part 6 (1pet 3:1-7) we spoke of what god commandments & PRACTICAL TEACHING REGARDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUSBANDS AND WIVES….in part 7 the lord speaks to us regarding our relationships with others, particularly fellow believers.

1Pe 3:8 – 9: we are called to be a blessing

  • it begins in our mind and ends in our heart
  • we are called to one mind (mind of christ/god)
  • phil 2:5: let this mind be in you which was in christ jesus…
  • romans: 12:2 speaks of the renewing of our mind…
  • be favorably disposed toward one another
  • be compassionate, tender hearted & courteous
  • don’t return evil for evil or reviling for reviling
  • love each other as brothers (let brotherly love continue…)
  • phillippians 2:1-4 sums this up well

1Pe 3:9-12  we are called to inherit a blessing

  • an inheritance is a gift (gifts can have qualifications)
  • to inherit a blessing we must be a blessing: ps 34:12-17
  • if you want the good life: put a guard upon your tongue
  • james speaks of controlling our tongue (james 1:26; 3:6-10)
  • turn away from evil & do good
  • seek peace; pursue it:  jesus said “blessed are the peace makers…
  • the eyes of the lord are upon the righteous
  • his ears are attentive to our prayers
  • the face of the lord is set against to who continue to do evil
  • we inherit blessings from god by being a blessing to others

1 pe 3:13-17  we are called to bless the god

  • we bless the father when we become like the son
  • if you suffer-suffer for righteousness (christ)
  • don’t let your suffering be self inflected (see also 1pet 4:14-16)
  • sanctify (hagiazo –  make holy, conscrate, venerate) the lord in your hearts
  • by representing him as he is.  we do this by: 1) being ready to give a reason for the hope that is in you, 2) having a good conscience that although they may defame you as evil doers, they recognize (christ’s) righteous character, good conduct & become ashamed

1 pet 3:18 – 22 CHRIST is our example in suffering & eternal glory

  • christ suffered for us: the just for the unjust to reconcile us to god
  • he preached to spirits in prision from the time of the flood
  • god had suffered with them for 120 years while the ark was built
  • 8 souls were saved as a result of noah’s obedience
  • flood is a type of baptism & salvation
  • not just removal of filth of flesh but good conscience toward god
  • this through christ’s death &  resurrection from the dead
  • the same spirit that raised christ from the dead raises us from the dead
  • christ is now in heaven at right  hand of god; place of authority

CONCLUSION – god has called us to be a holy nation, a peculiar people, a royal priesthood, the people of god, to rule and reign with him.  2Ti 2:12  If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

Jam 1:26  If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

Jam 3:6  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Jam 3:9  Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

Jam 3:10  Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
