Mothers, Gods Gift to All of Us

MOTHERS, GOD’S GIFT TO ALL OF US

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)   INTRODUCTION – TODAY IS THE DAY WHEN WE PAUSE EACH YEAR TO REMEMBER OUR MOTHERS AND THE INSTITUTION OF MOTHERHOOD.   THE BIBLE HAS MUCH TO SAY ABOUT FAMILIES AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS AND WHY NOT?   IT WAS GOD WHO INSTITUTED THE FIRST FAMILY WHEN HE SAID “IT IS NOT GOOD FOR MAN TO LIVE ALONE, I WILL MAKE HIM A HELP MEET.”  “THEREFORE SHALL A MAN LEAVE HIS FATHER AND HIS MOTHER, AND SHALL CLEAVE UNTO HIS WIFE: AND THEY SHALL BE ONE FLESH.”  (GEN. 2: 18 & 25)  BUT THAT IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY.  GEN. 4:1 AND ADAM KNEW EVE HIS WIFE; AND SHE CONCEIVED, AND BARE CAIN, AND SAID, I HAVE GOTTEN A MAN FROM THE LORD.”  AND THE FIRST FAMILY CAME INTO EXISTENCE AND THE INSTITUTION OF MOTHERHOOD WAS BORN. “ADAM CALLED HIS WIFE’S NAME EVE BECAUSE SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF ALL LIVING.”   THERE WERE SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN THE FIRST FAMILY AND THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS EVER SINCE.  GROWING UP, MY FAMILY HAD LOTS OF PROBLEMS BUT IT WAS MY MOTHERS LOVE THAT WAS THE GLUE THAT HELD OUR FAMILY TOGETHER.

II) BEING A MOTHER IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST GIVING BIRTH

1) THIS IS NOT TO MINIMIZE THE PAIN AND AGONY OF CHILDBIRTH.

2)  MOTHERHOOD IS LIKE THE WIND IN THAT AS AN THIRD PARTY OBSERVER WE MAY NOT SEE IT OR BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE IT BUT WE CAN CLEARLY SEE ITS EFFECTS ON THE FAMILY.  IT IS AMAZING TO BEHOLD.  HUSBANDS THAT ARE HONORED, CHILDREN ARE LOVED AND NURTURED GROW UP WITH CONFIDENCE AND SELF ESTEEM PREPARED TO FACE LIFE.

3)           WE ALSO SEE THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS UPON THE FAMILY AND CHILDREN WHEN PARENTS ARE NOT PRESENT EITHER PHYSICALLY OR EMOTIONALLY.

III)                SOME PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS OF MOTHERS AND MOTHERHOOD

1) THEIR LOVE IS UNCONDITIONAL “THE MOTHERS LOVE IS LIKE GOD’S LOVE; HE LOVES US NOT BECAUSE WE ARE LOVABLE, BUT BECAUSE IT IS HIS NATURE TO LOVE, AND BECAUSE WE ARE HIS CHILDREN.”  EARL RINEY IN CHURCH MANAGEMENT

2)  MOTHERS ALWAYS SEEM TO PUT THEIR HUSBANDS AND CHILDREN AHEAD OF THEMSELVES: ALTHOUGH THEY PREPARE THE FOOD THEY ARE THE LAST TO EAT AND ONLY ARE WILLING TO EAT IF THERE IS ENOUGH FOR ALL.

3)  THEY KNOW HOW TO MAKE A LITTLE GO A LONG WAY.   A CUPBOARD CAN SEEM EMPTY BUT A MOTHER WILL SCRAPE TOGETHER A MEAL FOR HER FAMILY.

4) THEY KEEP A LONELY VIGIL OF PRAYER AND INTERCESSION FOR WAYWARD AND STRUGGLING CHILDREN BUT ATTEMPT TO BURY AND HIDE THE HURT IN FEAR THAT THEIR CHILDREN WILL FEEL THEIR HURT.

5)  WHEN THE MONEY IS LOW AT CHRISTMAS AND HOLIDAYS, THEY ALWAYS SEE THAT THEIR CHILDREN AND HUSBANDS RECEIVE GIFTS; THEY OFTEN RECEIVE FEW OR NONE; THEY REMEMBER THEIR CHILDREN’S BIRTHDAYS BUT THEIRS IS OFTEN FORGOTTEN OR BARELY REMEMBERED.

6) THEY ALWAYS GET THE LAST PIECE OF DESERT IF THERE IS ANY LEFT.

7)  THEY ARE NOT OMNISCIENT BUT SOMETIMES IT SEEMS THAT WAY WITH THEIR UNCANNY INSTITUTION.  A JEWISH PROVERB “GOD COULD NOT BE EVERYWHERE SO HE MADE MOTHER…” I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE THEOLOGY BUT I UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING SAID.

8)  THEY NEVER STOP BEING A MOTHER, NO MATTER HOW OLD YOU & YOUR CHILDREN ARE, IT IS A VOCATION THAT LASTS A LIFETIME.

IV)  SOME EXAMPLES OF GODLY MOTHERS IN THE BIBLE

1)   HANNA WHO WAS BARREN BUT PROMISED IF GOD WOULD GIVE HER A CHILD TO DEDICATE HIM TO THE LORD.  GOD GAVE HER A SON SAMUEL AND THE REST IS HISTORY:  HE BECAME A PROPHET WHO ANOINTED THE KINGS OF ISRAEL AND CALLED SAUL AND DAVID TO TASK WHEN THEY SINNED AGAINST GOD.  THE BIBLE SAYS SAMUEL’S WORDS NEVER FELL TO THE GROUND.

2)   MARY THE MOTHER OF OUR LORD WHO WHEN THE ANGEL HAD TOLD HER THAT SHE WOULD CONCEIVE BY BEING OVERSHADOWED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT AND GIVE BIRTH TO THE LORD’S MESSIAH, THE CHRIST CHILD, SAID “MAY BE IT ONTO TO ME AS YOU HAVE SAID.”

3) THE APOSTLE PAUL WROTE OF YOUNG TIMOTHY’S MOTHER & GRANDMOTHER IN 2 TIM 1:5:  “i call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother lois and your mother eunice, and i am persuaded is in you also.”

V)CHARACTERISTICS OF A GODLY MOTHER AND WIFE(PROv 31:10-31 nkjv)

1)           VIRTUOUS, LOYAL & TRUSTWORTHY

2)           CAPABLE, ENERGETIC & HARD WORKING

3)           wise & RESOURCEFUL

4)           UNSELFISH, COMPASSIONATE & KIND, ALWAYS THINKING OF OTHERS

5)           PRUDENT, PREPARES FOR THE UNFORESEEN (LONG TERM PERSPECTIVE)

6)           HONORS HER HUSBAND (she is her husband’s CROWN)

7)           POSSESSES INNER STRENGTH & QUIET DIGNITY

8)           WATCHES OVER HER family & HOUSEHOLD

9)           CHASTE,  DISCREET & GODLY:  DOES NOT RELY OR COUNT ON HER CHARM, SEXUAL APPEAL OR  PHYSICAL APPEARANCE BUT IN HER FAITH IN GOD

VI)               HOW is SHE BE REGARDED & TREATED BY HER HUSBAND:

1)           Proverbs 18:22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD.

2)           Proverbs 5:18 Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth.

3)           Proverbs 19:14 … a prudent wife is from the LORD.

2)           hey OBEY & HONOR her and BY Their life is blessed and extended

3)           her godly example and instruction cause her children TO CARRY ON THE GODLY HERITAGE AND family TRADITION.

4)           JESUS WHILE HANGING ON THE CROSS LOOKED UPON HIS MOTHER WHO WAS WITH JOHN THE BELOVED AND SAID “WOMEN BEHOLD THY SON” AND TO JOHN “BEHOLD THY MOTHER” SHOWING HIS CARE AND CONCERN FOR HIS MOTHER AND HER WELL BEING.

VIII)           CONCLUSION:  ABRAHAM LINCOLN SAID “NO MAN IS POOR WHO HAS A GODLY MOTHER.”   I THANK GOD FOR A GODLY MOTHER.  SHE HAS GONE ON TO BE WITH THE LORD, BUT OH WHAT A DIFFERENCE SHE MADE.  I HAVE SIX BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER AND TO MY KNOWLEDGE ALL ARE LIVING FOR THE LORD, SAVE ONE BROTHER.  AFTER STRUGGLING WITH THE FIRST TWO BOYS MOM DETERMINED THAT WE WOULD GO TO CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY MORNING AND SUNDAY EVENING AND WEDNESDAY IN SPITE OF THE DEMANDS OF THE DAIRY FARM. (recount some memories)  WE WERE POOR BUT I NEVER FELT POOR BECAUSE OF A FAITHFUL, GODLY MOTHER.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK GOD FOR A GODLY WIFE, WHO LOVES JESUS AND HAS BEEN A SPIRITUAL ANCHOR TO OUR FAMILY.    IF YOU HAVE SUCH A MOTHER I PRAY THAT YOU HONOR HER AND CALL HER BLESSED.   IF YOU DID NOT I PRAY THAT YOUR WOUNDS HEAL AND THAT YOU FORGIVE.   IF YOU ARE HERE TODAY AND YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE FAILED AS A MOTHER, I WOULD POINT YOU TO THE GRACE AND MERCY OF GOD.  GOD LOVES YOU AND FORGIVES and will bring healing to your home.  i encourage you to begin to read god’s word and pray with your children.  his word will change them and give them hope!

Prov. 31: (King James)

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price [is] far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise [is] good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household [are] clothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing [is] silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth [it]; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 Strength and honour [are] her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue [is] the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband [also], and he praiseth her.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favor [is] deceitful, and beauty [is] vain: [but] a woman [that] feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. 2

Tim 1:3-7

3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
