Out With the Old in With the New

NEW YEARS: OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTION – TONIGHT MILLIONS AROUND THE WORLD ARE CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR 2009 WHICH WILL ARRIVE ONE SECOND AFTER MIDNIGHT!  IT IS A TIME WHEN PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATION REFLECT OVER THE PAST YEAR AND TO ACCESS THEIR SUCCESSES AND FAILURES, HOWEVER THEY MIGHT MEASURE THEM.  (THE TRUTH IS THEY ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT IT!)

II)    WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY: WE ARE A NEW CREATION

A)   OLD THINGS ARE PAST AWAY, ALL THINGS HAVE BECOME NEW…

B)   SOMETIMES THIS IS DIFFICULT FOR US TO BELIEVE

C)   GOD HAS GIVEN US A NEW NATURE BUT THE OLD NATURE SEEMS TO BE HANGING AROUND TRYING TO REASSERT IT’S DOMINANCE

III)   THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF OUR PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY

A)   with regard to salvation – “believe on the lord jesus christ and thou shall be saved”; GOD SAVES WHEN WE BELIEVE

B)   jESUS “BEHOLD I STAND AT THE DOOR AND KNOCK, IF ANY MAN OPENS THE DOOR I WILL COME INTO HIM …; JESUS KNOCKS, WE MUST OPEN

C)   OUR SALVATION COMES BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH; WHAT GOD DID FOR US THROUGH JESUS IS HIS GRACE; WE APPROPRIATE WHAT HE DID FOR US BY FAITH

D)   REGARDING OUR SANCTIFICATION – “IF YOU HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS YOU SHALL BE FILLED”; THE HUNGERING IS OUR PART THE FILLING IS GOD’S PART

IV)  THE NEW YEAR IS A GOOD TIME FOR SPIRITUAL SELF-ASSESSMENT

A)   PROBLEM IS WE CANNOT SEE OR ASSESS OUR TRUE SPIRITUAL CONDITION

B)   DAVID DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE HIS SIN UNTIL CONFRONTED BY NATHAN THE PROPHET

C)   SAMUEL CONFRONTED SAUL; JESUS CONFRONTED PETER, ETC.

D)   JESUS SAID “DON’T TRY TO TAKE THE MOTE OUT YOUR BROTHER’S EYE UNTIL YOU REMOVE THE BEAM FROM YOUR OWN EYE…”

E)   we assess our condition through honest inquiry into god’s word (THE MIRROR), THROUGH PRAYER & listening to the STILL SMALL VOICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

F)   SEE EXAMPLES OF SCRIPTURES THAT SPEAK OF OUR ONGOING ROLE THE WORKING OUT OF OUR SALVATION USES VERBS THAT SPEAK OF: PUTTING OFF/PUT ON, FLEEING/PURSUING, LEAVING BEHIND, RIDDING OURSELVES

V)   CONCLUSION – LETS DETERMINE WITH GOD’S HELP TO ACCEPT OUR RESPONSIBILITY AND MAKE THAT COMMITMENT TO FOLLOW CHRIST WHOLLY.  I CANNOT OVER EMPHASIZE THE NEED TO READING AND MEDITATING ON GOD’S WORD DAILY, SPENDING TIME IN PRAYER, BEING FAITHFUL IN CHURCH ATTENDENCE AND GIVING AND BEING INVOLVED IN GOD’S WORK.

SCRIPTURES THAT SPEAK OF OUR RESPONSIBILITY

ONGOING ROLE THE WORKING OUT OF OUR SALVATION

Heb 6:1-3 (NIV) Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, :2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.

1CoR 5:7, 8 (NIV) Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast–as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

1Pe 1:13 (niv) Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

1Pe 1:17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work IMpartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.

1Ti 6:10 (NIV) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Rom 13:12, 14 (NIV) The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

Eph 6:13, 18 (niv) Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

1Pe 2:1-3 (niv) Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Eph 4:22 – 32  (niv) You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin” : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Col 3:2 – 15  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 3 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

Rev 3:18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
