Pillar and Foundation of Truth

the CHURCH – PILLAR & defender OF gods TRUTH

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

  1. intro –WHEN JESUS WAS UPON EARTH HE PROCLAIMED THAT HE WAS THE TRUTH AND THAT IF WE COME TO KNOW THE TRUTH THE TRUTH WILL SET US FREE. Jesus  words stand in stark contrast to our society today that says there is no absolute truth all truth is relative – i have my truth and you have your truth. Jer 9:5 Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning.  Jesus left it to us his CHURCH TO UPHOLD & PRESERVE THE TRUTH of god REVEALED through CHRIST & THE APOSTLES.  how do we do this?:

II.            BY RECEIVING AND OBEYING the truth

Joh 8:31 (kjv) THEN said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Mat 13:20-23 (NIV) THE seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 BUT since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 THE seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 BUT the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

III.           BY PROCLAIMING the truth, THE WORD OF LIFE

Php 2:14 -16 (kjv)  Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15  That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; 16  Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

1Jn 1:1-3 (kjv)  That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled,  of the Word of Life; 2  (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3  That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

2Peter 1:16-17  For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 HE received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

IV.          BY defending and contending for the truth

A.            Php 1:15 – 17 (KJV) Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: 16 THE one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: 17  But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.

Jud 1:3 – 4 (NIV)  Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.4 For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

V.            BY DEMONSTRATING ITS POWER by indwelling presence of THE HOLY SPIRIT

Act 1:8 (kjv) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Act 4:29 – 31 (kjv) Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Act 6:8 Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.

conclusion – the apostle Paul called the church the pillar and foundation of truth. 1Ti 3:14 – 15 (NIV) Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that,  if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.  in this context the pillar and foundation speak of that which supports and establishes and preserves god’s truth as revealed in Christ and the word given to the apostles & prophets. we know that it is one thing to know the truth but another to obey & practice the truth.  Jesus said   “Luke 6:46 (NIV)  “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? he continued in Luke 6:49 (NIV) BUT the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
