Seven Characteristics of a Godly Mother

SEVEN CHARACTERISTICS OF A GODLY MOTHER

AS EXEMPLIFIED BY MARY THE MOTHER OF JESUS

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTION:  today we pause in our busy lives to celebrate mother’s day. the bible has a lot to say about wives and mothers AND FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS.  THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT MOTHERHOOD IS A NOBLE AND SACRED CALLING, TO BE HIGHLY ESTEEMED.  Proverbs 31:10, 11 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.  THIS IS ONE AMAZING WOMAN.  SHE MAKES CLOTHING FOR HER FAMILY, INCLUDING SPINNING THE CLOTH.  SHE PLANTS A VINEYARD AND OUT OF THE PROCEEDS OF THE VINEYARD BUYS A FIELD.  SHE GETS UP EARLY IN THE MORNING AND HER LAMP DOES NOT GO OUT AT NIGHT. SHE WATCHES OVER THE AFFAIRS OF HER HOUSEHOLD.  i ESPECIALLY LIKE THE ENDING: Proverbs 31:28 – 30   Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:  “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

I WOULD like TO TELL YOU A STORY ABOUT MY MOTHER.  I WAS ABOUT 15 YEARS OLD AND I WAS PLAYING JR VARSITY BASKETBALL … THIS MORNING I WOULD LIKE TO BRIEFLY LOOK AT THE MARY THE MOTHER OF OUR LORD, AS AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF WOMANHOOD AND MOTHERHOOD.  WE WILL SEE THAT MARY BEGAN TO PREPARE HERSELF FOR MOTHERHOOD AND TO BE USED OF GOD LONG BEFORE SHE BECAME THE MOTHER OF JESUS CHRIST THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD.        TEXT: LUKE 1:26 – 56

I)     MARY PREPARED HERSELF TO BE USED OF GOD

1)    MARY KEPT HERSELF PURE IN MIND AND BODY.

2)    Luk 1:34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

3)    Luk 1:35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

4)    Mat 5:8 Blessed are the PURE IN HEART, for they will SEE GOD.

5)    THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT OUR BODIES ARE THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

II)    MARY WAS WILLING TO BE USED OF GOD

1)    SHE WAS SUBMISSIVE TO GOD’S WILL.

2)    Luk 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”

3)    ABOUT 33 YEARS LATER JUST BEFORE HE WAS ARRESTED JESUS SAID SOMETHING VERY similar: “…NOT MY WILL BUT THINE BE DONE.”

III)   MARY BELIEVED AND ACTED UPON GOD’S WORD GIVEN HER

1)    MARY BELIEVED GOD AND HURRIED TO BE WITH HER COUSIN ELIZABETH IN JUDEA. (LK 1:39)

2)    Luk 1:45 Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”

IV)  MARY IDENTIFIED WITH GOD’S LARGER PLAN & PURPOSE (LK 1:48-55)

1)    FOR MARY IT WAS NOT ABOUT HER, IT WAS ABOUT HIM AND HIS WILL & PURPOSE.  MARY HAD A SENSE OF DESTINY.

2)    GOD WOULD USE HER TO BRING SALVATION AND TO FULFILL PROMISES MADE TO ABRAHAM AND THE PROPHETS.

3)    GOD WOULD USE HER TO BRING DOWN THE MIGHTY AND TO LIFT UP THE HUMBLE.

4)    GOD HAS A PLAN AND PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE, A MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH, BUT YOU MUST PREPARE YOURSELF, YOU MUST BE WILLING TO BE USED BY GOD, AND YOU MUST IN FAITH ACT UPON HIS WORD.

V)   MARY WORSHIPED AND GAVE GLORY TO GOD

1)    Luk 1:46-47 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…

2)    SURELY ALL THE GLORY, HONOR AND PRAISE BELONG TO GOD.

3)    THE BIBLE SAYS THAT HE WILL NOT SHARE HIS GLORY WITH ANOTHER.

VI)  MARY WAS RESPECTFUL AND OBEDIENT TO GOD’S COMMANDS

1)    MARY & JOSEPH BROUGHT JESUS TO DO WHAT THE CUSTOM OF THE LAW REQUIRED, AS THE FIRST BORN TO BE DEDICATED ONTO THE LORD (LK 2:23, 27)

2)    JESUS WAS PRESENTED TO SIMEON THE OLD PRIEST WHO HAD BEEN WHO HAD BEEN PROMISED THAT HE WOULD SEE ISRAEL’S MESSIAH.

VII) MARY CONTEMPLATED & TREASURED THE ACTIVITY OF GOD IN HER LIFE

1)    ANGELS, SHEPHERDS, THE CHRIST CHILD, BORN JUST LIKE THE PROPHETS HAD FORTOLD IN THE CITY OF BETHELHEM. Luk 2:19 … Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

2)    WHEN JESUS WAS BROUGHT TO THE PASSOVER AND GOT LOST, MARY AND JOSEPH FOUND HIM IN THE TEMPLE SPEAKING WITH THE PRIESTS: Luk 2:51 IT SAYS THAT MARY treasured all these things in her heart.

3)    WE MUST DEVELOP A LIFE OF PRAYER AND READING GOD’S WORD, HIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR LIFE, AND THEN LISTEN FOR THE STILL SMALL VOICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND CONTEMPLATE THE ACTIVITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN OUR LIVES AND CIRCUMSTANCES.

4)    IF YOU HAVE ACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD.  IF YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD, YOUR STEPS ARE ORDERED OF THE LORD.

VIII)       CONCLUSION:  SOME OF YOU LIVE IN OR WERE RAISED IN DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILIES.  YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED FIRSTHAND THE RAVAGES OF ALCOHOL, DRUGS, ANGER AND MENTAL, PHYSICAL, AND PERHAPS EVEN SEXUAL ABUSE. MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU THIS MORNING.  MOTHER’S DAY MAY BE DIFFICULT FOR YOU BECAUSE YOUR MOTHER MAY NOT HAVE BEEN A GREATEST OF MOTHERS.  GOD WANTS TO HEAL YOUR PAIN AND ENABLE YOU TO FORGIVE.   GOD WANTS THIS PAIN TO END IN YOUR GENERATION.   HE WANTS TO GIVE YOU A HOPE AND A FUTURE.  THE BIBLE INSTRUCTS US TO HONOR OUR FATHERS AND OUR MOTHERS THAT OUR DAYS BE LONG UPON THE EARTH. SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO CHOOSE TO DO THIS BECAUSE GOD INSTRUCTED US TO DO SO.  IT BEGINS WITH FORGIVENESS.  WE MUST FORGIVE TO RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS.  FORGIVE AND FORGET, DON’T KEEP BRINGING UP THE SINS OF THE PAST.  PUT IT UNDER THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST AND GO ON.
