Terminology of Salvation

TERMINOLOGY OF SALVATION

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

 ATONEMENT –  “Covering with a price”.  Our sins have been covered with the price of Christ’s blood, satisfying God’s demands.  “hilasterion” mercy seat means atonement cover.

Þ     1Ch 6:49  But Aaron and his sons offered upon the altar of the burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, and were appointed for all the work of the place most holy, and to make an atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

Þ     Lev 16:30  For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.

Þ     Rom 5:11  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

PROPITIATION – Covering; atoning sacrifice.

Þ     Rom 3:25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Þ     1Jo 2:2  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Þ     Rom 3:25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

REPENTANCE – A fundamental change of mind and attitude from being alienated from God in our mind to agreeing with God.

Þ     Mar 1:15  And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Þ     Act 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Þ     Rev 2:5  Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

REDEMPTION – Payment for ransom.  Price paid to set one free from bondage or slavery (to sin).

Þ     Exo 6:6  Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:

Þ     Psa 49:15  But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

Þ     Psa 111:9  He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant forever: holy and reverend is his name.

Þ     Rom 3:24  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Þ     1Co 1:30  But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Þ     Eph 1:7  In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Þ     Tit 2:14  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

RECONCILIATION – To be made right with God.

Þ     2Ch 29:24  And the priests killed them, and they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.

Þ     2Co 5:19  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Þ     Eph 2:14  For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15  Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16  And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17  And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

CONVERSION – “Turn around”.  To turn from sin to God. (Our response to the drawing of the Holy Spirit.)

Þ     Psa 51:13  Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

Þ     Mat 18:3  And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Þ     Act 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

JUSTIFICATION – To declare righteous, to be restored to Divine favor.

Þ     Luk 18:11  The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12  I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13  And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14  I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Þ     Rom 3:24  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Þ     Rom 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Þ     1Co 6:11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Þ     Gal 3:11  But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

 REGENERATION – Importation of Divine life, a creative act of God in us.  (God response to our conversion.)

Þ     Mat 19:28  And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Þ     Tit 3:5  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

SANCTIFICATION – Two fold meaning 1) Separated from sin, 2) Devoted to God.

Þ     1Co 1:30  But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Þ     1Th 4:3  For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

Þ     2Th 2:13  But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

Þ    A gifted writer said, “If regeneration has to do with our nature, justification with our standing and adoption with our position, then sanctification has to do with our character and conduct.  In justification we are declared righteous so that in sanctification we may become righteous.”  From “Bible Doctrines”, P.C. Nelson

ADOPTION – “Placed as a son or daughter into God’s family.”  Accepted into God’s family with all its responsibilities and privileges.

Þ     Rom 8:15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Þ     Gal 4:5  To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Þ     Eph 1:5  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE “SAVED”?

Þ     Joh 3:3  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Þ     THE PART OF MAN THAT IS BORN AGAIN IS THE REAL MAN / WOMAN, THE SPIRIT YOU.

Þ     2Co 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Þ     WHEN YOU WERE BORN AGAIN YOU DID NOT GET A NEW BODY OR A NEW MIND.  THE OUTWARD MAN DOES NOT CHANGE.
