The Apostate Church (Part 1)

THE APOSTATE CHURCH (PART 1)
JESUS CHRIST, THE HEAD OF HIS CHURCH
(Pastor Lee Jackson FFWC)

I) INTRODUCTION – THE WORD APOSTATE COMES FROM THE GREEK WORD APOSTASIA, WHICH MEANS TO FORSAKE, TO ABANDON, TO REBELL AGAINST OR TO DESERT (THE FAITH). IT IS POSSIBLE TO ABANDON THE FAITH AFTER ONCE BEING SAVED. CHURCHES ARE MADE UP OF PEOPLE…WHEN PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH BACKSLIDE THEY DON’T NECESSARILY LEAVE THE CHURCH, BUT THEY CAN CORRUPT AND DEFILE THE BODY OF CHRIST IF THEY ARE IN A POSITION TO DO SO.
A) 2PE 2:20 SPEAKS OF THOSE WHO “HAVE ESCAPED THE CORRUPTION OF THE WORLD BY KNOWING OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST AND ARE AGAIN ENTANGLED IN IT AND OVERCOME, THEY ARE WORSE OFF AT THE END THAN THEY WERE AT THE BEGINNING.”,
B) PAUL TO YOUNG TIMOTHY IN 1TI 4:1, 2: NOW THE SPIRIT SPEAKETH EXPRESSLY, THAT IN THE LATTER TIMES SOME SHALL DEPART FROM THE FAITH, GIVING HEED TO SEDUCING SPIRITS, AND DOCTRINES OF DEVILS; 2 SPEAKING LIES IN HYPOCRISY; HAVING THEIR CONSCIENCE SEARED WITH A HOT IRON;
C) JUDE WARNED US JUDE 1:3 – 4 BELOVED, WHEN I GAVE ALL DILIGENCE TO WRITE UNTO YOU OF THE COMMON SALVATION, IT WAS NEEDFUL FOR ME TO WRITE UNTO YOU, AND EXHORT YOU THAT YE SHOULD EARNESTLY CONTEND FOR THE FAITH WHICH WAS ONCE DELIVERED UNTO THE SAINTS. 4 FOR THERE ARE CERTAIN MEN CREPT IN UNAWARES, WHO WERE BEFORE OF OLD ORDAINED TO THIS CONDEMNATION, UNGODLY MEN, TURNING THE GRACE OF OUR GOD INTO LASCIVIOUSNESS, AND DENYING THE ONLY LORD GOD, AND OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.
D) GAL 1:6 – 7 I AM ASTONISHED THAT YOU ARE SO QUICKLY DESERTING THE ONE WHO CALLED YOU BY THE GRACE OF CHRIST AND ARE TURNING TO A DIFFERENT GOSPEL– 7 WHICH IS REALLY NO GOSPEL AT ALL. EVIDENTLY SOME PEOPLE ARE THROWING YOU INTO CONFUSION AND ARE TRYING TO PERVERT THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST.

II) THE CHURCH ESTABLISHED UPON THE PERSON AND WORK OF JESUS CHRIST (MAT 16:15 – 18)
A) MAT 16:15 – 18 HE SAITH UNTO THEM, BUT WHOM SAY YE THAT I AM? 16 AND SIMON PETER ANSWERED AND SAID, THOU ART THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD. 17 AND JESUS ANSWERED AND SAID UNTO HIM, BLESSED ART THOU, SIMON BAR-JONA: FOR FLESH AND BLOOD HATH NOT REVEALED IT UNTO THEE, BUT MY FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN. 18 AND I SAY ALSO UNTO THEE, THAT THOU ART PETER, AND UPON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH; AND THE GATES OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST IT.
B) HE WAS THE CHRIST “THE ANOINTED ONE” FORETOLD BY THE PROPHETS OF OLD.
C) DANIEL 9:25 – 26″KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THIS: FROM THE ISSUING OF THE DECREE TO RESTORE AND REBUILD JERUSALEM UNTIL THE ANOINTED ONE, THE RULER, COMES, THERE WILL BE SEVEN ‘SEVENS,’ AND SIXTY-TWO ‘SEVENS.’ IT WILL BE REBUILT WITH STREETS AND A TRENCH, BUT IN TIMES OF TROUBLE. DAN 9:26 AFTER THE SIXTY-TWO ‘SEVENS,’ THE ANOINTED ONE WILL BE CUT OFF AND WILL HAVE NOTHING.
D) LUKE 4:18 – 19″THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS ON ME, BECAUSE HE HAS ANOINTED ME TO PREACH GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM FREEDOM FOR THE PRISONERS AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT FOR THE BLIND, TO RELEASE THE OPPRESSED, 19 TO PROCLAIM THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR.”… LUK 4:21 AND HE BEGAN BY SAYING TO THEM, “TODAY THIS SCRIPTURE IS FULFILLED IN YOUR HEARING.”

III) JESUS CHRIST IS THE HEAD OF HIS CHURCH (COL 1:16 – 20).
A) JESUS ESTABLISHED THE CHURCH FOR GOD’S PURPOSES.
B) THE CHURCH IS A LIVING SPIRITUAL ORGANISM – A BODY.
C) THE CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST IN THE EARTH.
D) SHE IS HERE TO ACCOMPLISH HIS PURPOSE. (MORE ABOUT THIS LATER.)

IV) THE CHURCH IS HAS BEEN CALLED OUT & SEPARATED ONTO GOD.
A) THE GREEK WORLD FOR CHURCH IS “ECCLESIA” MEANING “CALLED OUT”.
B) THE CHURCH IS THE CORPORATE BODY CONSISTING OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN CALLED OUT OF THIS WORLD TO FOLLOW JESUS AND HAVE RESPONDED.
C) JESUS CALLED HIS DISCIPLES – PETER, JAMES, JOHN, NATHANIEL, ETC.
1) THEY LEFT THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR VOCATIONS AND FOLLOWED HIM.
2) THEY WERE TAUGHT AND DISCIPLED BY HIM; THIS CONTINUED IN THE EARLY CHURCH AND DOWN THROUGH HISTORY. (ACTS 11:26)
D) TODAY THE HOLY SPIRIT CALLS MEN AND WOMEN, BOYS AND GIRLS – MANY ARE CALLED BUT FEW ARE CHOSEN BECAUSE FEW RESPOND TO THE CALL.
E) CHRISTIANS ARE IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF THE WORLD. (JOHN 17)
1) WE ARE NEW CREATURES IN CHRIST JESUS.
2) WE ARE REBORN OF HIS SPIRIT; WE ARE MEMBERS OF GOD’S FAMILY.
3) WE HAVE NEW HEART, NEW RESPONSIBILITIES, AND NEW GOALS AND OBJECTIVES.

V) THE CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST. (1COR 12:13-14 & 18-20)
A) 1CO 12:13 – 14 FOR BY ONE SPIRIT ARE WE ALL BAPTIZED INTO ONE BODY, WHETHER WE BE JEWS OR GENTILES, WHETHER WE BE BOND OR FREE; AND HAVE BEEN ALL MADE TO DRINK INTO ONE SPIRIT. 14 FOR THE BODY IS NOT ONE MEMBER, BUT MANY.
B) 1CO 12:18 BUT NOW HATH GOD SET THE MEMBERS EVERY ONE OF THEM IN THE BODY, AS IT HATH PLEASED HIM. 19 AND IF THEY WERE ALL ONE MEMBER, WHERE WERE THE BODY? 20 BUT NOW ARE THEY MANY MEMBERS, YET BUT ONE BODY.
C) EPH 4:4 THERE IS ONE BODY, AND ONE SPIRIT, EVEN AS YE ARE CALLED IN ONE HOPE OF YOUR CALLING; 5 ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM, 6 ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL, WHO IS ABOVE ALL, AND THROUGH ALL, AND IN YOU ALL.
D) AS THE BODY OF CHRIST WE ARE HERE TO NOT JUST REPRESENT HIM BUT TO FINISH THE WORK THAT HE BEGAN. WE CANNOT DO THIS AS INDIVIDUALS BUT AS A BODY.

VI) THE CHURCH IS CALLED THE BRIDE OF CHRIST. (EPH 5:25 – 27)
A) EPH 5:23 FOR THE HUSBAND IS THE HEAD OF THE WIFE AS CHRIST IS THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH, HIS BODY, OF WHICH HE IS THE SAVIOR. 24 NOW AS THE CHURCH SUBMITS TO CHRIST, SO ALSO WIVES SHOULD SUBMIT TO THEIR HUSBANDS IN EVERYTHING. 25 HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES, JUST AS CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH AND GAVE HIMSELF UP FOR HER 26 TO MAKE HER HOLY, CLEANSING HER BY THE WASHING WITH WATER THROUGH THE WORD, 27 AND TO PRESENT HER TO HIMSELF AS A RADIANT CHURCH, WITHOUT STAIN OR WRINKLE OR ANY OTHER BLEMISH, BUT HOLY AND BLAMELESS.
B) HE SANCTIFIES AND CLEANSES THAT HE MIGHT PRESENT IT TO HIMSELF A GLORIOUS CHURCH, WITHOUT SPOT, OR WRINKLE THAT IT SHOULD BE HOLY AND WITHOUT BLEMISH.

II) CONCLUSION – IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION THE AGING APOSTLE JOHN WHO SAW A VISION OF THE LIVING CHRIST WHO WAS DEAD, BUT IS ALIVE FOREVER MORE; HE HOLDS THE KEYS OF HELL AND DEATH. JOHN WAS TOLD TO WRITE ABOUT THE MYSTERY OF THE SEVEN STARS AND OF SEVEN GOLDEN LAMPSTANDS. IN HIS VISION JESUS WAS WALKING AMONG THE CANDLESTICKS, WHICH REPRESENT THE CHURCHES: TOLD THE CHURCH OF EPHESUS THAT THEY HAD LOST THEIR FIRST LOVE. HE TOLD THEM TO REPENT OR HE WOULD REMOVE THEIR CANDLESTICK FROM THEM. HE TOLD THE LAST OF THE SEVEN CHURCHES, LAODICIA, THAT ALTHOUGH THEY CONSIDERED THEMSELVES RICH AND IN NEED OF NOTHING, THAT THEY WERE WRETCHED, MISERABLE, POOR, BLIND AND NAKED…NEXT WEEK, LORD WILLING, WE WILL CONTINUE ON THIS SERIES ON THE APOSTATE CHURCH.
III)

SCRIPTURES ON THE CHURCH
Mat 16:15 – 18 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Col 1:13-18 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Act 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

1Co 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

Joh 3:28 – 30 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

Eph 5:25 – 27 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

1Co 10:16 – 17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? 18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. 19 And if they were all one member, where were the body? 20 But now are they many members, yet but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: 23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. 24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honor to that part which lacked: 25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. 26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

1Co 12:18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

Jud 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
