The Blessings of Forgiveness

THE BLESSINGS OF FORGIVENESS
(Pastor Lee Jackson FFWC)

I) INTRODUCTION
A) STORY OF JOSEPH: HIS BROTHERS HAD SOLD HIM INTO SLAVERY IN EGYPT. HE BECAME HEAD OF POTIPHER’S HOUSE AND WAS WRONGFULLY IMPRISIONED WHEN POTIPHER’S WIFE FALSELY ACCUSED HIM, BUT JOSEPH KEPT A RIGHT SPIRIT TOWARD GOD AND GOD WAS FAITHFUL AND RAISED HIM UP AS GOVERNOR OVER THE HARVEST OF EGYPT. HIS BROTHERS WHO HAD SOLD HIM INTO EGYPT CAME TO EGYPT FOR FOOD BECAUSE OF THE FAMINE. (GENESIS 45:1 – 11; 50:19 – 21)
B) DISCUSS IMPLICATIONS OF THE YEAR OF JUBILEE – INVOLVES FORGIVENESS OF DEBT & RESTORATION OF LIFE & PROPERTY (LEV 25:11)
C) STORY OF THE PRODICAL SON THE FATHER LOOKED FOR THE WAYWARD BOY DAY AFTER DAY AND WHEN HE FINALLY DID RETURN HOME HIS FATHER SAW HIM A LONG WAY OFF AND RAN AND HUGGED HIM AND PUT A ROBE AROUND HIM AND A RING UPON HIS FINGER AND CELEBRATED THE RETURN OF HIS SON. THE IS A PICTURE OF GOD’S LOVE FOR US.

II) WHY MUST WE FORGIVE?
A) BECAUSE JESUS TAUGHT US TO PRAY “FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS,
B) AS WE ALSO HAVE FORGIVEN OUR DEBTORS. MATT 6:12)
C) JESUS MODELED FORGIVENESS: JESUS PRAYED ON THE CROSS: “FATHER FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO…”
D) BECAUSE YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER FORGAVE YOU. IN MATT 18:21 – 34 STORY OF A SERVANT WHO WAS FORGIVEN AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF MONEY BY HIS MASTER BUT REFUSED TO FORGIVE A FELLOW SERVENT OF A VERY SMALL AMOUNT IN COMPARISON. HIS MASTER FOUND OUT ABOUT IT AND DEALT WITH HIM VERY SEVERLY.
E) SO THAT YOUR PRAYERS MAY NOT BE HINDERED AND YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER WILL FORGIVE YOU WHEN YOU ASK HIM. IN MARK 11: 25-26 AND WHEN YOU STAND PRAYING, IF YOU HOLD ANYTHING AGAINST ANYONE, FORGIVE HIM, SO THAT YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN MAY FORGIVE YOU YOUR SINS.”
F) SO THAT YOUR WORSHIP IS NOT HINDERED. IN MATT. 5: 23 – 24 “THEREFORE, IF YOU ARE OFFERING YOUR GIFT AT THE ALTAR AND THERE REMEMBER THAT YOUR BROTHER HAS SOMETHING AGAINST YOU, 24 LEAVE YOUR GIFT THERE IN FRONT OF THE ALTAR. FIRST GO AND BE RECONCILED TO YOUR BROTHER; THEN COME AND OFFER YOUR GIFT. “
G) SO THAT YOU CAN HEAL IN THE INNER MAN AND AVOID BITTERNESS AND INNER DEFILEMENT.
1) IN EPHESIANS 4:30-32 “AND DO NOT GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD, WITH WHOM YOU WERE SEALED FOR THE DAY OF REDEMPTION. 31 GET RID OF ALL BITTERNESS, RAGE AND ANGER, BRAWLING AND SLANDER, ALONG WITH EVERY FORM OF MALICE. 32 BE KIND AND COMPASSIONATE TO ONE ANOTHER, FORGIVING EACH OTHER, JUST AS IN CHRIST GOD FORGAVE YOU.” ,
2) IN HEBREWS 12:14 “MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH ALL MEN AND TO BE HOLY; WITHOUT HOLINESS NO ONE WILL SEE THE LORD. 15 SEE TO IT THAT NO ONE MISSES THE GRACE OF GOD AND THAT NO BITTER ROOT GROWS UP TO CAUSE TROUBLE AND DEFILE MANY. “
III) HOW MUST WE FORGIVE?
A) COMPLETELY, THE WAY GOD FORGIVES US
B) WITHOUT REMEMBRANCE
C) 1 COR 4:12-13 “WHEN WE ARE CURSED, WE BLESS; WHEN WE ARE PERSECUTED, WE ENDURE IT; 13 WHEN WE ARE SLANDERED, WE ANSWER KINDLY. “
D) 1PET. 3:9 “DO NOT REPAY EVIL WITH EVIL OR INSULT WITH INSULT, BUT WITH BLESSING, BECAUSE TO THIS YOU WERE CALLED SO THAT YOU MAY INHERIT A BLESSING.”

IV) WHEN SHOULD WE FORGIVE?
A) IMMEDIATELY; BEFORE WE ARE ASKED
B) IF WE CANNOT HONESTLY FORGIVE PRAY THAT GOD GIVE YOU THE GRACE TO FORGIVE, AND HE WILL DO THIS.

V) HOW MANY TIMES SHOULD WE FORGIVE?
A) AS MANY TIMES AS NECESSARY. AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT GOD TO FORGIVE YOU: IN MATT 18:21-22: “THEN PETER CAME TO JESUS AND ASKED, “LORD, HOW MANY TIMES SHALL I FORGIVE MY BROTHER WHEN HE SINS AGAINST ME? UP TO SEVEN TIMES?” 22 JESUS ANSWERED, “I TELL YOU, NOT SEVEN TIMES, BUT SEVENTY-SEVEN TIMES.”
B) (READ ROMANS 12:14 –21)

VI) THE BLESSINGS OF FORGIVENESS
A) GOD WILL FORGIVE WHEN WE ASK HIM AS WE FORGIVE OTHERS.
B) OUR PRAYERS AND OUR WORSHIP OF GOD IS NOT HINDERED.
C) GOD RESTORES AND RENEWS OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
D) FORGIVENESS PROMOTES HEALING IN THE INNER MAN

VII) CONCLUSION:
A) WHEN WE DON’T FORGIVE OTHERS:
* WE SET OURSELVES UP AS JUDGE AND JURY, BUT GOD SAYS : “VENGEANCE IS MINE SAITH THE LORD I WILL REPAY…”
* GOD DOESN’T FORGIVE US (PARABLE OF THE UNFORGIVING SERVANT IN MATT.)
* WE KEEP GOD FROM WORKING IN OUR CIRCUMSTANCES
* WE ARE FAILING TO TRUST GOD. THE BIBLE SAYS IN ROM 8:27-28 “ AND WE KNOW THAT ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD TO THOSE WHO LOVE GOD, TO THOSE WHO ARE THE CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE.”
* WE CONTINUE TO CARRY THAT HEAVY BURDEN INSTEAD OF GIVING IT TO THE LORD.
B) WHEN WE FORGIVE:
* WE LET JESUS, THE RIGHTEOUS ONE, BE THE JUDGE: (ONLY THE LAMB WAS WORTHY TO OPEN THE SCROLL)
* GOD FORGIVES US
* WE RELEASE GOD TO WORK IN OUR CIRCUMSTANCES.
* WE DEMONSTRATE OUT TRUST IN GOD AND IN HIS COVENANT WITH US.
C)
STORY OF CORI TEN BOOM AFTER SEVERAL YEARS MEETING WITH A EX NAZI PRISION GUARD WHO HAD BECOME A CHRISTIAN. WHO HAD BEEN AT THE CAMP WHERE CORY AND HER MOTHER AND SISTER WERE IMPRISIONED AND WHERE HER MOTHER AND SISTER DIED. GOD ASKED HER TO GO TO HIM AND TELL HIM THAT SHE FORGAVE HIM. AT FIRST SHE COULD NOT BUT OFFERED HIM A WOODEN HAND IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD. GOD GAVE HER THE GRACE TO FORGIVE HIM – NO HE WAS HER BROTHER IN CHRIST.
