The Cry of a Broken Heart

THE CRY OF A BROKEN HEART

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTIONTHE CITY OF JERUSALEM, THE CAPITAL CITY OF ISRAEL, WAS CALLED THE CITY PEACE, BUT IT HAS KNOWN VERY LITTLE PEACE OVER THE YEARS.  JERUSALEM THE CAPITAL CITY OF GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE, THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF DAVID, ISRAEL’S GREATEST KING, AND THE LOCATION OF THE TEMPLE, THE EARTHLY DWELLING PLACE OF GOD.  IT WAS INTENDED TO BE THE CENTER OF WORSHIP OF THE TRUE GOD AND A SYMBOL OF JUSTICE TO ALL PEOPLE.  BUT JERUSALEM HAD BECOME BLIND TO GOD AND INSENSITIVE TO HUMAN NEED.

II)     WHEN JESUS WALKED THE EARTH JERUSALEM AND ISRAEL WAS UNDER ROMAN RULE. THE ROMANS ALLOWED THE JEWS TO PRACTICE THEIR JEWISH RELIGION, BUT FOR ALL OF THEIR RELIGION THEY DID NOT KNOW GOD OR RECOGNIZE HIS SON JESUS, AS THE MESSIAH, THE ANOINED ON FORETOLD BY THEIR OWN PROPHETS. JESUS SAID THEY WERE JUST LIKE THEIR FOREFATHERS WHO HAD KILLED THE PROPHETS THAT GOD HAD SENT TO THEM.  NOW THEY WERE ABOUT TO CRUCIFY THE LORD OF GLORY IN THEIR IGNORANCE.

III)   IN OUR TEXT, WE SEE THE DEPTH OF JESUS FOR LOST PEOPLE AND FOR HIS BELOVED CITY.  TEXT: MATT. 23:37&38

IV)  IT IS THE CRY OF WOUNDED LOVE  – “O JERUSALEM, JERUSALEM”.  THESE WORDS EXPRESS THE DEPTH OF GOD’S LOVE, REVEALED IN JESUS CHRIST HIS SON.  “HE CAME ONTO HIS OWN AND HIS OWN RECEIVED HIM NOT…”

A)   GOD IS NOT INDIFFERENT TO THE WORLD: Eze 33:11 SAY unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

B)   HIS LOVE WAS UNWANTED AND REFUSED.  WOUNDED AND BLEEDING LOVE’S HEART CRIES, “O JERUSALEM, JERUSALEM!”

V)   IT IS THE CRY OF REJECTED MERCY – “HOW OFTEN WOULD I HAVE GATHERED THY CHILDREN TOGETHER EVEN AS A HEN GATHERETH HER CHICKENS UNDER HER WINGS, AND YE WOULD NOT!”

A)   THIS IS PRECIOUS MERCY REJECTED.  JESUS IS CRYING OUT “MY MERCY WOULD HAVE SHELTERED YOU.”

B)   THIS IS PATIENT MERCY REJECTED.  “THE LORD IS NOT SLACK CONCERNING HIS PROMISES, AS SOME MEN COUNT SLACKNESS; BUT IS LONGSUFFERING TO US-WARD…” 2 PETER 3:9 THE PSALMIST SAID, “THOU HAS NOT DEALT WITH US ACCORDING TO OUR SINS.”

C)   THIS IS PLEADING MERCY REJECTED. “AND YE WOULD NOT.”  HEAR HIM.  AH, THE PERIL OF REJECTING CHRIST.

VI)  IT IS THE CRY OF IMPENDING JUDGEMENT – “BEHOLD YOUR HOUSE IS LEFT UNTO YOU DESOLATE.”

A)   THE DAY OF OPPORTUNITY HAD PASSED.  THE DOOR OF MERCY WAS SHUT, AND JERUSALEM AND ITS INHABITANTS WERE DOOMED. THE CITY OF JERUSALEM NEVER HAD ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY.  WHEN JUDGEMENT COMES OPPTUNITY ENDS.  A FEW YEARS LATER, IN 70 AD JERUSALEM WAS TOTALLY DISTROYED, MANY WERE KILLED AND THE SURVIVORS SCATTERED AMONG THE NATIONS.

B)   JUSTICE AND JUDGEMENT IS COMING TO THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.  THE BIBLE CALLS IT “THE DAY OF THE LORD”, THE DAY WHEN GOD’S WRATH IS POURED OUT; A DAY WHEN GOD’S MERCY AND GRACIOUS OFFER OF SALVATION ENDS.

C)   ON THAT DAY, OPPORTUNITY FOR GOD’S MERCY AND PROTECTION WILL END FOR YOU.  TO PROCRASTINATE, TO LEAVE ANY SERVICE WITHOUT CHRIST, TO BE INDIFFERENT TO GOD’S MERCY AND HIS GRACIOUS OFFERING OF SALVATION IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE BIBLE SAYS: “…behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation…”  2COR. 6:2B  IF YOU DO NOT KNOW CHRIST, WILL YOU COME TO HIM TODAY, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE?  (SONG “JUST AS I AM” PAGE 221)
