The Fire of God

THE FIRE OF GOD

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)  INTRODUCTION – LAST SUNDAY NIGHT WE SPOKE OF THE RIVER OF GOD AND THE REFRESHING AND RENEWAL IT BRINGS.   HOW THE HOLY SPIRIT WANTS TO FILL US AND SPRING UP AS GUSHING MIGHT STREAM WITHIN OUR BEING. “OUT OF YOUR BELLY WILL FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER”.   THIS MORNING I WANT TO SPEAK TO YOU OF THE FIRE OF GOD, AND THE PURPOSES OF GOD IN SENDING HIS FIRE.   THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF THE FIRE OF GOD IN MANY AND VARIOUS FORMS.  IT IS MY PRAYER THAT   THIS STUDY OF THE FIRE OF GOD AND GOD’S PURPOSE IN SENDING IT WILL CAUSE YOU TO SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES AND BRING YOU A SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING OF GOD’S HEART AND CALLING IN YOUR LIFE.

II) THE FIRE OF GOD CALLS US TO REVERENCE & WORSHIP

A)       Lev. 6:12 – 13 ‘And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings. 13 ‘A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.  (Also Lev. 8:18–21) BURNT OFFERING A RAM IS OFFERED.  IT  WAS:

1)    A VOLUNTARY ACT OF WORSHIP

2)    AN EXPRESSION OF DEVOTION TO GOD

3)    A COMMITMENT AND COMPLETE SURRENDER TO GOD

4)    AN OFFERING FOR UNINTENTIONAL SIN

B)      APOSTLE JOHN’S VISION OF JESUS CHRIST Rev. 1:13 – 17…in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead

III)           THE FIRE OF GOD CALLS US TO TURN ASIDE FOR SERVICE & ANSWER HIS CALL

A)       Ex. 3: 1 – 7: Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.2 And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.3 Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.”4 So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.”5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” 6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.7 And the LORD said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

B)       Hebrews 12:28 –29 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our God is a consuming fire.

IV)          THE FIRE OF GOD SANCTIFIES AND PURIFIES US

A)       CONSERVATIONISTS HAVE FOUND THAT FOREST FIRES CAN BE A GOOD THING. THEY BURN AWAY THE UNDERBRUSH AND FALLEN LIMBS ENABLING THE GRASS AND TREES TO GROW.  IT IS BETTER TO HAVE SEVERAL SMALL FIRES OVER A PERIOD OF YEARS THAN ONE LARGE DEVASTATING FIRE.

B)       Mal. 3:1 – 3 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. 2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he [is] like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: 3 And he shall sit [as] a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

C)      Mat. 3:10 – 12 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and [with] fire: 12 Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

D)      Jer. 23:29 [Is] not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer [that] breaketh the rock in pieces?

V)           THE FIRE OF GOD TRIES AND TESTS OUR WORKS

1 Cor. 3:9 – 15 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, [ye are] God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

VI)          BAPTISM OF HOLY GHOST & FIRE ENDUES US WITH POWER TO BE HIS WITNESSES

A)      WHEN CHRIST WAS ARRESTED AND TRIED PRIOR TO HIS CRUCIFIXION YOU RECALL THAT PETER DENIED HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST SEVERAL TIMES AS JESUS FORETOLD A FEW DAYS PREVIOUS.  WITHIN A FEW SHORT WEEKS A SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION OCCURRED WITHIN PETER.   HE BECAME BOLD STANDING UP BEFORE THAT SAME PEOPLE THAT HAD CHRIST CRUCIFIED.  THIS IS RECORDED IN ACTS 4:8 – 13.

B)      Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto [them] all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

C)      Acts 2:2 – 4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

VII)         THE FIRE  OF GOD BRINGS JUDGEMENT

A)      TO SODOM & GOMORRAH: Genesis 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; Genesis 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

B)      PROPHETS OF BAAL VS ELIJAH: 1 kings 18:38 – 39 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that [was] in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw [it], they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he [is] the God; the LORD, he [is] the God.

C)      THOSE WHO REJECT CHRIST

1)    Matthew 23:33 [Ye] serpents, [ye] generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

2)    Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

3)    Revelation 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

4)    Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

VIII)       CONCLUSION – IN THE NATURAL WORLD WE KNOW THAT FIRE IS BOTH A BLESSING AND A DISASTER.  FOR THE BELIEVER THE FIRE OF GOD IS INTENDED TO LEAD US INTO WORSHIP, SANCTIFY AND PURIFY US TO PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH,  AND TO EMPOWER US TO BE HIS WITNESSES AND WHEN WE STAND BEFORE HIM IT WILL TEST AND TRY OUR LIFE’S WORK.   FOR THE UNBELIEVER THAT FAILS TO RESPOND TO THE DRAWING AND CALLING OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD, IT WILL TAKE THE FORM OF THE AWFUL AND FEARFUL JUDGEMENT OF GOD.    IT IS MY PRAYER THAT THOSE HERE WILL EXPERIENCE THE BENEFITS OF THE FIRE OF GOD, YIELDING THEMSELVES TO THE DIVINE FLAME FOR HIS INTENDED PURPOSE.
