The Freedom that Christ Brings

THE FREEDOM THAT CHRIST BRINGS

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTIONTHE lyrics of the SONG america say “LAND WHERE OUR FATHERS DIED, LAND WITH THE PILGRIM’S PRIDE ON EVERY MOUNTAINSIDE, LET FREEDOM RING”. ONCE AGAIN WE CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY MARKING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE SIGNING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE FROM king george of ENGLAND AND THE TYRANNY OF TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.  WE AS CITIZENS OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY ARE BLESSED WITH FREEDOM AND THE BENEFITS THAT FREEDOM HAS BROUGHT TO US IN GOVERNMENT, COMMERCE AND EVERYDAY LIVING AS A FREE PEOPLE.  THE IRONY OF IT ALL IS THAT SO VERY many ARE still not  really FREE; SO MANY THAT ARE ENSLAVED BY SIN AND ADDICTIVE HABITS AND BEHAVIOR WHICH can LEAD TO EMOTIONAL AND even PHYSICAL  IMPRISONMENT.   THE BIBLE HAS SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT FREEDOM.  IT IS GOD’S WILL THAT WE SHOULD BE FREE, truly FREE.  HE GAVE US OUR WILL and respects our CHOICES.   IT IS HIS desire THAT we WILL CHOOSE TO LIVE FOR HIM, BUT HE WILL NOT FORCE US.  THE CONCEPT OF FREEDOM DID NOT BEGIN WITH THE SIGNING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.  the bible has much to say about freedom.  (all scripture kjv)

II)     GOD HEARD THE CRY OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL AND DELIVERED THEM:

A)   Exodus 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

B)   Exodus 6:5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant. god heard their cry…god remembered his covenant!

C)   Exodus 6:6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I [am] the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:

D)   Deuteronomy 5:6 I [am] the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

E)   GOD HEARS OUR CRY TODAY AND wants to DELIVER US:  A BROKEN AND A CONTRITE HEART HE WILL NOT DESPISE.

III)   GOD HAS A PLAN FOR FREEDOM AND RESTORATION FOR ALL OF MANKIND THAT WAS FULFILLED IN JESUS CHRIST.

A)   Isaiah 58:6 [Is] not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

B)   Jesus quoting Isaiah 61 in Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

IV)  THE FREEDOM THAT WE HAVE IN CHRIST

A)   FREES US FROM THE BONDAGE OF SIN (WE can now resist sinful behavior)

1)    2 Corinthians 3:17b where  the Spirit of the Lord [is], there [is] liberty.

2)    JOHN 8:31-36:  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 AND ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 THEY answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 JESUS answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 AND the servant abideth not in the house forever: but the Son abideth ever. 36  If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

3)    READ ROM 6:6-10:  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 FOR he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 NOW if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 KNOWING that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 FOR in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 LIKEWISE reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 LET not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 NEITHER yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 FOR sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

B)   FREES US FROM  THE GUILT AND CONDEMNATION OF OUR PAST SINFUL LIFE

(a)   JOHN 3:16-17:  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

(b)  ROMANS 8:1-2:  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

C)   FREES US FROM THE WEAKNESS OF THE FLESH ROMANS 8:3-11:  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

D)   FREES US FROM THE ETERNAL (MOST SERIOUS) CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

1)    1ST CONSEQUENCE – ALIENATION AND SEPARATION FROM GOD: ROMANS 8:15-16  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

2)    2ND CONSEQUENCE – SPIRITUAL DEATH:  John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

3)    3RD CONSEQUENCE – THAT WE ARE FREE & EMPOWERED TO DO GOD’S WILL

4)    1 Corinthians 9:19 For though I be free from all [men], yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

5)    1 Peter 2:16 As free, and not using [your]libertyfor a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

6)     ROMANS 6:17-23:  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19  I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20  For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21  What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

V)   CONCLUSION – (STORY OF THE MAN THAT LIVED AMONG THE TOMBS)  god offers us freedom in jesus christ but it is STILL OUR CHOICE.  WE MUST ACCEPT AND RECEIVE HIS GRACIOUS OFFER. AFTER CHRIST HAS SET US FREE WE CONTINUE TO LIVE IN THAT FREEDOM.  Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.  JOSHUA UNDERSTOOD THE DANGER OF GOING BACK INTO THE WORLD.   Deut. 30:15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; … “AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE WE WILL SERVE THE LORD…”   IF YOU ARE HERE TODAY AND YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS FREEDOM THAT WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT, I HAVE GOOD NEWS FOR YOU.  YOU CAN BE FREE, YOU CAN RECEIVE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS BEFORE YOU LEAVE TODAY AND BECOME A NEW CREATURE IN CHRIST, WITH A NEW FUTURE.  YOU CAN LEAVE HERE WITH THE PEACE OF GOD THAT PASSES ALL HUMAN UNDERSTANDING.  JESUS SAID “YOU SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE…”
