The Godly Woman

THE GODLY WOMAN

 MENTOR AND ROLE MODEL IN THE CHURCH

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)       INTRODUCTION – THIS MORNING WE CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY AND THE GODLY WOMEN IN OUR CHURCH AND RECOGNIZE THE NECESSARY AND VALUABLE ROLE THEY PLAY, BUT WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY THAT DEMEANS, DEVALUES AND GENERALLY IGNORES THE ROLE OLDER PEOPLE AND WOMEN IN PARTICULAR, AND WE HAVE SUFFERED THE CONSEQUENCES.  THE 5TH COMMANDMENT TELLS US TO HONOR OUR FATHER AND MOTHER THAT OUR DAYS MAY BE PROLONGED ON THE EARTH. THIS COMMANDMENT HAS AN IMPLICIT WARNING THAT OUR LIVES MAY BE CUT SHORT IF WE FAIL TO HONOR OUR MOTHER AND FATHER.  SCRIPTURE HAS A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THE ALL IMPORTANT ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE CHURCH AND THE HOME.

A)    PAUL WROTE TO YOUNG TIMOTHY REMINDING HIM OF HIS SPIRITUAL HERITAGE THAT CAME THROUGH HIS MOTHER LOIS AND GRANDMOTHER EUNICE:  2 Tim 1:5 …I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.   IT IS BELIEVED THAT TIMOTHY’S FATHER MAY HAVE DIED WHEN TIMOTHY WAS A CHILD.   MANY OF US, MYSELF INCLUDED, ACQUIRED THEIR SPIRITUAL UPBRINGING THROUGH THEIR MOTHER.  IT WAS MY MOTHER, NOT MY FATHER, THAT TAUGHT US THE SCRIPTURES AND REQUIRED US TO GO TO CHURCH.  IT WAS MY DEAR GRANDMOTHER, A PASTOR’S WIFE, WHO AFTER HER HUSBAND DIED, CONTINUED TO LOVE THE LORD AND LIVE FOR HIM, WHO TAUGHT ME TO MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE.

B)    THE SETTING FOR TODAY’S TEXT IN TITUS, PAUL HAD ESTABLISHED A CHURCH IN CRETE AND LEFT YOUNG TIMOTHY THERE TO ORGANIZE AND INSTRUCT NEW CONVERTS AND GENERALLY TO SET THE CHURCH IN ORDER.  PAUL GAVE INSTRUCTIONS TO TIMOTHY FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, OLD AND YOUNG, REGARDING THEIR ROLE IN THE CHURCH AND THE FAMILY!    TEXT: TITUS 2:1 – 5

 II)    PAUL INSTRUCTED TIMOTHY TO TEACH MEN AND WOMEN, YOUNG AND OLD (AND YOUNG AND OLD IN THE LORD).

A)    EVERYONE, YOUNG AND OLD, MEN AND WOMEN, HAS AN ESSENTIAL ROLE TO PLAY IN THE CHURCH. THE GREEK WORD USED: “PREBUTIDAS” IS NOT LIMITED TO AGE.

B)    MEN AND WOMEN ARE EQUAL IN THEIR POSITION IN CHRIST BUT HAVE DIFFERENT ROLES IN THE FAMILY AND THE CHURCH!

C)    PAUL FIRST FOCUSED ON CHARACTER. (WE CANNOT TEACH OR MODEL OR MENTOR OR INSTRUCT OTHERS UNTIL WE BECOME OURSELVES.)  OLDER WOMEN WERE TO BE TAUGHT THE NECESSITY OF:

1)      REVERENT BEHAVIOR – GODLY CONDUCT, GODLY DRESS AND GODLY CONVERSATION.

2)      AT THE SAME TIME PAUL WARNED AGAINST – SLANDER (FAULT FINDING, GOSSIP, FALSE ACCUSATION).  (SATAN IS THE SLANDERER, WHEN WE SLANDER OTHERS WE ARE DOING HIS WORK.)

D)    AFTER THEY HAD BECOME THEN AND ONLY THEN WERE THEY TO TEACH THE YOUNGER WOMEN.

1)      PAUL USED THE GREEK WORD “NEAS” WHICH WOULD INCLUDE NOT ONLY YOUNGER WOMEN, BUT WOMEN YOUNG IN THE LORD.

2)      TO LOVE THEIR HUSBANDS. (GK “PHILANDROUS” CONNOTING ESTEEM OR RESPECT FOR THEIR HUSBANDS.),

3)      LOVE OF THEIR CHILDREN,

4)      TO BE DISCREET, CHASTE OR SEXUALLY PURE,

5)      TO BE GOOD HOME MAKERS,

6)      TO BE GOOD (GODLY), AND

7)      SUBMISSIVE TO THEIR HUSBANDS.

E)     OLDER WOMEN WERE TO DISCIPLE THE YOUNGER WOMEN & WOMEN YOUNG IN THE LORD REGARDING PROPER BEHAVIOR AND THEIR ROLE IN THE CHURCH AND FAMILY.

F)     ADHERENCE TO THESE TEACHINGS WILL PREVENT THE WORD OF GOD (CHRISTIANITY) FROM BEING BLASPHEMED.

III) APPLICATION – THE STORY OF RUTH & NAOMI (BOOK OF RUTH IN O.T.)

A)    NAOMI WAS A REAL, LIFE EXAMPLE OF GODLY CHARACTER & ROLE MODEL TO RUTH.   THIS GODLY CHARACTER WAS IMPARTED TO RUTH.

B)    CHARACTERS: ELIMELECH, WIFE OF NAOMI, NAOMI, TWO SONS: MAHLON AND CHILION, ALL FROM BETHLEHEM OF JUDAH (WHERE JESUS WAS TO BE BORN.), RUTH AND ORPHA (RUTH’S DAUGHTER-IN-LAWS, FROM LAND OF MOAB.) (RELATE THE STORY.)

C)    RUTH TO HER MOTHER-IN-LAW, NAOMI: “Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God..” (Ruth 1:16, NKJV)

D)    NAOMI LOVED HER DAUGHTER-IN-LAWS AND HER IMPACT UPON THEIR LIVES, ESPECIALLY RUTH CHANGED THE COURSE OF HISTORY.

1)      BOOK OF RUTH RELATES A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY OF RUTH AND BOAZ.

2)      NAOMI AND RUTH REMAINED FAITHFUL TO GOD IN THE MIDST OF GREAT PERSONAL TRAGEDY.

3)      RUTH WAS FAITHFUL AND LOYAL TO NAOMI AND HONORED HER MOTHER IN LAW.

4)      SHE WORKED HARD IN THE FIELDS TO SUSTAIN HERSELF AND HER MOTHER-IN-LAW.  BOAZ TOOK NOTE OF RUTH, HER INTEGRITY AND HER MORAL BEHAVIOR – SHE DID NOT RUN AFTER THE YOUNGER MEN.  BOAZ TOLD HIS WORKERS TO LEAVE EXTRA FOR HER TO GLEAN.

5)      IN THE COURSE OF TIME, BOAZ ASKED RUTH TO MARY HIM AND SHE CONSENTED.   HE BOUGHT BACK THE LAND THAT BELONGED TO NAOMI’S HUSBAND, BECOMING NAOMI’S KINSMAN REDEEMER; A TYPE OF CHRIST, WHO HAS BECOME OUR KINSMAN REDEEMER, BUYING BACK WHAT SATAN HAS STOLEN FROM US.

IV) CONCLUSION – THE STORY OF NAOMI & RUTH & BOAZ BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATES THAT GOD IS NO RESPECTER OF PERSONS.  RUTH MADE A CLEAN BREAK WITH HER PAST, HER PEOPLE AND CULTURE OF IDOLATRY.  RUTH, A MOABITE WOMEN BECAME THE GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF KING DAVID.   BOAZ WAS A DESCENDANT OF RAHAB, A FORMER PROSTITUTE FROM JERICHO, WHO WAS SPARED BY JOSHUA, FOR PROTECTING THE MEN JOSHUA SENT TO SPY OUT JERICHO.  GOD HONORS FAITH AND FAITHFULNESS AND HE IS NO RESPECTER OF PERSONS.   IT IS VITAL THAT EACH GENERATION TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR TEACHING AND DISCIPLINING THE NEXT GENERATION.  THE GODLY MOTHERS AND WOMEN OF THIS CHURCH ARE A GIFT TO US ALL AND ESSENTIAL TO THE WELL BEING OF THE CHURCH.  I WOULD ENCOURAGE THE YOUNG WOMEN OF THIS CHURCH TO SEEK THEIR COUNSEL AND LISTEN TO THEM AND LEARN FROM THEM.   (CLOSE WITH PRAYER OVER THE MOTHERS AND WOMEN OF THE CHURCH.)

SCRIPTURES:

Titus 2:1-5 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things– 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. (NKJV)

Ruth 1:16-17

“Entreat me not to leave you,

Or to turn back from following after you;

For wherever you go, I will go;

And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;

Your people shall be my people,

And your God, my God.

17 Where you die, I will die,

And there will I be buried.

The LORD do so to me, and more also,

If anything but death parts you and me.”

NKJV
