The Grace of Humility

THE GRACE OF HUMILITY

(WHY IS IT ESSENTIAL TO THE CHRISTIAN LIFE AND MINISTRY?)

(PASTOR LEE JACKSON – FFWC)

II) INTRODUCTIONTHE CULTURAL VALUES IN AMERICA TODAY ARE IN CONFLICT WITH BIBLICAL VALUES AND TEACHING.  IN OUR AMERICAN CULTURE HUMILITY IS NOT A STRENGTH BUT A WEAKNESS.  THAT IS NOT WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES.  THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT HUMILITY IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TO THE CHRISTIAN LIFE AND MINISTRY.   HUMILITY IS NOT BEING “HIGH MINDED”, THINKING OURSELVES AS BETTER THAN OTHERS HAVING A MEEK AND TEACHABLE SPIRIT.  HUMILITY IS THE OPPOSITE OF PRIDE AND ENABLES US TO ASK AND GRANT FORGIVENESS QUICKLY.    BEING HUMBLE DOES NOT, IN MY OPINION, MEAN THAT WE SUFFER FROM LOW SELF-ESTEEM BUT THAT WE HAVE CONFIDENCE IN GOD. OUR VALUE AND WORTH WERE ASSIGNED AND ATTRIBUTED TO US BY GOD WHEN 1ST WHEN HE CREATED US IN HIS IMAGE AND AFTER HIS LIKENESS AND 2ND WHEN GOD GAVE HIS SON TO DIE IN OUR PLACE IN ORDER THAT WE MAY BE RECONCILED TO HIM.   IT IS NOT THAT WE AS INDIVIDUALS ARE WORTH MORE THAN OTHERS FOR JESUS DIED FOR ALL.   (STORY OF LUKE 22:24)

THE BIBLE TREATS HUMILITY AS AN IMPORTANT TOPIC.  IT IS DEALT WITH EXTENSIVELY DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY THROUGH APPLICATION AND EXAMPLE.  HUMILITY STRENGTHENS ALL OF OUR RELATIONSHIPS BEGINNING WITH OUR RELATIONSHIP TO GOD AND THEN OUR FAMILIES, OUR FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES AND EVEN OUR ENEMIES.  WHY DOES SCRIPTURE SAY ABOUT HUMILITY AND WHY IS SO IMPORTANT?

III)           THE NATURE OF HUMILITY (PHIL 2:1-11)

A)       IT KEEPS UNBRIDLED AMBITION IN CHECK (DO NOTHING THROUGH VAIN GLORY OR STRIFE)

B)       IT KEEPS SELFISHNESS IN CHECK (LOOK NOT EVERY MAN TO HIS OWN THINGS BUT ALSO ON THE THINGS OF OTHERS)

C)      IT PROMOTES LOVE AND UNITY AMONG THE BROTHERN (HAVING THE SAME LOVE, BEING OF ONE ACCORD, OF ONE MIND)

D)      IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR TRUE SPIRITUAL GROWTH (INDIVIDUALLY & CORPORATELY)

IV)          GOD’S REGARD FOR THE HUMBLE

A)       HE HEARS THEIR CRY:   Psalms 9:12 …He forgetteth not the cry of the humble.

B)       HE LIFTS THEM UP AND REVIVES THEIR SPIRIT BUT CASTS DOWN THE PROUD AND THE WICKED:

1)    Psalms 147:6 The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.

2)    Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name [is] Holy; I dwell in the high and holy [place], with him also [that is] of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

V)           HUMILITY OPENS THE DOOR FOR GODS BLESSINGS, GRACE AND PROMISES

A)       Luke 18:14: “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” NIV

B)       Matthew 5: 3 Blessed [are] the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

C)      James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

D)      1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all [of you] be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

E)       HUMILITY ENABLES US TO RECEIVE INSTRUCTION AND UNDERSTANDING AND BRINGS TRUE LASTING HONOR:  Proverbs 15:32 – 33 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. 33 The fear of the LORD [is] the instruction of wisdom; and before honour [is] humility.

F)       HUMILITY PROMOTES UNITY IN THE CHURCH: Eph 4:1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Eph 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Eph 4:3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

G)      HUMILITY AND REPENTENCE BRING REVIVAL TO THE CHURCH: 2Ch 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

VI)          GOD REVEALS HIS PLANS TO THE HUMBLE

A)       Psalms 69:32, 3 The humble shall see [this, and] be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

B)       GOD REVEALED HIS PLANS TO NOAH, ABRAHAM, MOSES AND SIMEON THE PRIEST THAT WAS LOOKING FOR THE MESSIAH TO COME

VII)         BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF HUMILITY

A)       MOSES WAS ONE OF GOD GREATEST LEADERS YET HE WAS ONE OF THE MEEKEST MEN IN ALL THE EARTH.

B)       JOHN THE BAPTIST:  “He must increase but I must decrease.”

C)      MARY: Luk 1:46 – 48: And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord  47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed…

D)      JESUS:

1)    Isaiah 53:3 – 4:  He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

2)    Mat 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

3)    Philippians 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

VIII)       SCRIPTURAL INSTRUCTIONS TO US CONCERNING HUMILITY

A)       GOD REQUIRES US TO BE HUMBLE: Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

B)       WE ARE TO SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER:  1 Peter 5:5 – 6 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all [of you] be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

C)      WE ARE TO CONSIDER OTHERS BETTER THAN OURSELVES AND LOOK OUT FOR THEIR INTERESTS: Phi 2:3,4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

D)       WE ARE NOT TO LORD IT OVER ONE ANOTHER BUT TO SERVE ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE:  Luke 22:24 – 27

E)       KINGDOM PRINCIPLE:  Matthew 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

IX)          CONCLUSION GOD HAS CHOSEN THE HUMBLE AND THE FOOLISH THINGS:

1 Corinthians 1:27 – 31 …God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, [yea], and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glo    ry in his presence.

Isa 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.

Isa 66:2 Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the LORD. “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.

Dan 10:12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.

Luk 1:46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord  Luk 1:47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, Luk 1:48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, Luk 1:49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me– holy is his name. Luk 1:50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. Luk 1:51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. Luk 1:52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. Luk 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. Luk 1:54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful Luk 1:55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.”
