The Great I Am

THE GREAT I AM

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTION – IN GenESIS 15:1  GOD REVEALED HIMSELF TO ABRAM SAYING, “…Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.”  GOD CALLED ABRAM OUT OF THE UR OF CALDEES AND SEPARATED HIM ONTO HIMSELF TO REVEAL HIMSELF TO ABRAHAM.  HE TOLD ABRAM THAT HE WOULD MAKE OF HIM A GREAT NATION.  YOU MAY NOT THINK OF ISRAEL BEING A GREAT NATION BUT THE VERY FACT THAT IT IS HERE TODAY ABOUT 3500 YEARS LATER TESTIFIES THAT GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES.  WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT GOD CHOSE MOSES TO DELIVER ISRAEL FROM THE LAND OF EGYPT AND TO LEAD THEM INTO THE LAND THAT HE HAD PROMISED ABRAHAM GENERATIONS AGO.

II)     TEXT:  – ExoDUS 3:14 AND God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

III)   GOD TOLD MOSES TO TELL ISRAEL: “I AM THAT I AM” HAS SENT YOU.”  WHAT was god saying in revealing himself by this unusual name?

A)    THAT THERE IS NO GOD BESIDE HIM. IsaIAH 44:6 THUS saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

B)   THAT he is self-existent; HE is in AND OF HIMSELF.  HE DEPENDS UPON NO ONE BUT All else are wholly dependent upon him.

C)   THAT That he is eternal and unchangeable, the same, yesterday, today, and forever.

D)   THAT HE IS Self revealing; we cannot FIND HIM OR KNOW HIM by searching find him out UNLESS HE WANTS TO BE FOUND.  WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT HIM, HE HAS REVEALED TO US.

E)   THAT he is faithful and true to HIS WORD as well as in his nature AND HE KEEPS his promises.

F)    god told jeremiah “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” (Jer 32:27) “…Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.” (Jer 1:8)

IV)  JESUS CAME AS “THE GREAT I AM” IN THE FLESH.

A)   JESUS was CONCERNED THAT his disciples knew WHO HE was. WHEN WE REALLY KNOW WHO HE IS WE ARE TRANSFORMED IN MATTHEW 16:13 JESUS asked his disciples, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 AND they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. 5  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

B)   IN JohN 8:58 JESUS MADE THE ASTOUNDING STATEMENT: “Before Abraham was, I am…”  HE IS SAYING THAT HE IS “THE GREAT I AM” REVEALED IN THE FLESH.

C)   Jesus said i am the light of the world: JohN 8:12 THEN spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

D)   Jesus said i am the bread of life:

1)    John 6:35 …Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

2)    John 6:51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

E)   Jesus said in John 14:6 “…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Joh 10:9  I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

F)    Jesus said in John 15:1  I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

G)   jesus said in John 10:11  “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

H)   Jesus said in John 11:25 “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live…”

I)     Jesus said in Rev 1:8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty

V)   WE REVEAL THE GREAT “I AM” – EXAMPLE THE APOSTLE PAUL & others.

A)   like paul, i am a sinner saved by god’s grace:

1)    1TiM 1:15 THIS is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

2)    1Co 15:10 …by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain…I labored more abundantly than they all yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

B)   like paul, i am persuaded of that nothing can separate me from his love: Rom 8:38 FOR I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

C)   like paul, i am not ashamed of the gospel:  Rom 1:16 FOR I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

D)   like paul, i am crucified with christ; i have taken up my cross to fallow him:  Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

E)   like moses and isaiah, i am called by him and i am available for service:

1)    moses: Exo 3:4  And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

2)    isaiah:  Isa 6:8 ALSO I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

F)    like isaac, i am blessed:  i am a citizen of an eternal kingdom that will never pass away.  i am a son / daughter of god. in Gen 26:24 AND the LORD appeared unto isaac and said, “I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.”

G)   i am ready to meet him:  2TiM 4:6 FOR I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.

VI)  CONCLUSIONJdg 6:12-14  And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valor. 13  And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. 14  And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
