The Law of Patience

THE 21 UNBREAKABLE LAWS OF LIFE (14) – THE LAW OF PATIENCE

  INSTANT GRATIFICATION SELDOM LASTS

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

  1. I.                    INTRODUCTION – MAX ANDERS, IN HIS BOOK ON THE “21 UNBREAKABLE LAWS OF LIFE SAYS, “AS A PASTOR, I HAVE LISTENED TO ALL TOO MANY PEOPLE’S HEART RENDING STORIES ABOUT MESSES THEY ARE IN BECAUSE THEY TOOK THE QUICK, EASY AND WRONG WAY OUT OF A SITUATION OR MADE THE QUICK, EASY AND WRONG RESPONSE TO TEMPTATION.” THEY TYPICALLY ARE LOOKING FOR A BAND-AID TO TREAT A DEEPLY INFECTED SPIRITUAL WOUND.  INSTANT GRATIFICATION DOES NOT TYPICALLY PRODUCE GOOD, LONG LASTING RESULTS.  YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR; WHEN YOU PULL UP TO A DRIVE IN WINDOW AT MCDONALDS YOU DO NOT EXPECT TO ORDER A GORMET MEAL.

II)       WE GET IN TROUBLE WHEN WE BLINDLY FOLLOW OUR EMOTIONS

A)      MAX ANDERS SPEAKS OF HOW MANY TIMES HE SAT IN HIS OFFICE AS SOMEONE TOLD HIM THEY HE OR SHE WAS LEAVING THEIR SPOUSE BECAUSE THEY HAD FALLEN IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE ELSE.  THEY KNEW IT WAS SIN BUT WERE MORE THAN WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE DOWN THE ROAD (THEY OFTEN GREALY UNDERESTIMATE WHAT THE PRICE WILL BE.) OR AS SOMEONE TOLD HIM THAT HE OR SHE WAS MARRYING AN UNBELIEVER (OR SOMEONE WHO CLAIMED TO BE A BELIEVER BUT WHO EXHIBED SCANT EVIDENCE OF IT) KNOWING IT WAS WRONG.  (IT VERY SELDOM WORKS OUT.)  WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT THIS?

B)       SIN IS EASIER UP FRONT, BUT MUCH HARDER DOWN THE ROAD; RIGHTEOUSNESS IS HARDER UP FRONT, BUT MUCH EASIER DOWN THE ROAD.

C)        SAMSON IN THE BOOK OF JUDGES IS A GOOD EXAMPLE.  AS A JEW AND NAZARITE, HE WASN’T SUPPOSED MARRY OUTSIDE OF HIS FAITH, BUT HE ASKED HIS FATHER TO MARRY A GENTILE WOMAN, WHOSE FAMILY WORSHIPED IDOLS.  HIS FATHER BEGGED HIM NOT TO BUT HE PERSISTED.  IN THE END IT COST HIM HIS FREEDOM, HIS EYESIGHT, HIS SELF-RESPECT, HIS EYESIGHT AND FINALLY HIS LIFE.

III)    EXERCIZING PATIENCE IS HARD BUT WELL WORTH THE WAIT

A)      PATIENCE DOESN’T COME NATURAL FOR MOST OF US.

B)       MAX ANDERS RELATES HOW HE WAS TOLD WHEN EATING A PEACH HOW PEACH TREES GROW FROM THE SEED.  HE PLANTED THE SEED AND WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT WHEN HE LOOKED THE NEXT MORNING THERE WAS NO TREE.  HE DUG IT UP AND THREW IT AWAY…

C)       DID YOU EVER GET IMPATIENT FOR A ROSE TO BLOOM AND DECIDE TO OPEN IT UP YOURSELF OR TO HELP A BUTTERFLY OUT OF ITS CACOON?

IV)    what DO THE SCRIPTURES SAY?

A)      1Co 9:24 – 27 NIV: DO you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

B)       2Co 4:16 NIV: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

C)       Gal 5:22, 23 niv: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

II)      LIFE CHECK

A)      WHAT EXPERIENCE CAN YOU REMEMBER IN WHICH YOU WERE IMPATIENT AND ENDED UP MAKING A DECISION THAT YOU NOW REGRET?

B)       HAVE YOU WATCHED FAMILY MEMBERS AND CLOSE FRIENDS IGNORE THE WARNINGS IN GOD’S WORD FORGING AHEAD WITH RASH DECISIONS THAT TURNED OUT BADLY.

C)       WHAT SITUATIONS DO YOU FACE RIGHT NOW THAT IN WHICH YOU COULD EASILY LOSE PATIENCE AND MAKE AN EMOTIONAL DECISION THAT YOU MIGHT REGRET LATER?  HOW CAN YOU BE SURE TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION?
