The Law of Servanthood

THE LAW OF SERVANT HOOD

LOOKING OUT FOR THE OTHER GUY

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTION – I AM CONTINUING ON IN MY SERIES ON THE UNBREAKABLE LAWS OF LIFE.  LAST WEEK WE TALKED ABOUT THE LAW OF STEWARDSHIP AND WE LEARNED THAT “IT ALL BELONGS TO GOD” AND THAT WE ARE TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF ALL THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US.  WE LEARNED THE BIBLE SAYS THAT IT IS REQUIRED OF A STEWARD TO BE FAITHFUL (1COR 4:2).  TONIGHT WE WILL BE DISCUSSING THE LAW OF SERVANT HOOD  SERVANT HOOD IS NOT ONE OF THOSE VIRTUES THAT OUR CULTURE TENDS TO VALUE BUT THE BIBLE HAS MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT VIRTUE. CHUCK COLSON, IN HIS BOOK DANGEROUS GRACE, WROTE:  NOTHING DISTINGUISHES THE KINGDOMS OF MAN FROM THE KINGDOM OF GOD MORE THAN THEIR DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED VIEWS OF THE EXERCISE OF POWER.  ONE SEEKS TO CONTROL PEOPLE, THE OTHER TO SERVE PEOPLE; ONE PROMOTES SELF, THE OTHER PROSTRATES SELF; ONE SEEKS PRESTIGE AND POSITION, THE OTHER LIFTS UP THE LOWLY AND DESPISED ”  TEXT: MARK 10:45 NIV “FOR EVEN THE SON OF MAN DID NOT COME TO BE SERVED, BUY TO SERVE, AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE A RANSOM FOR MANY.

II)    JESUS TAUGHT MODELED AND TAUGHT SERVANT LEADERSHIP

mARK 10:42-45 (niv): Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

III)   JOHN THE FORERUNNER OF CHRIST WAS A SERVANT LEADER

A)    “HE MUST INCREASE BUT I MUST DECREASE…” (READ & DISCUSS JOHN 3:26-30)

B)    WE SERVE THE LORD ACCORDING TO OUR GIFTS & CALLINGS.  WE ARE A FRIEND OF THE BRIDEGROOM. THERE IS NO PLACE FOR COMPARISON OR COMPETITION IN OUR SERVICE TO GO: 2COR 10:12 (niv): “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”

II)    AS MEMBERS OF THE BODY OF CHRIST, WE FOLLOW CHRIST’S EXAMPLE

A)    PHILIPPIANS 2:1-8 (NIV): If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death– even death on a cross!

B)   AFTER WASHING HIS DISCIPLES FEET JESUS SAID  Very truly I tell you, no servant is Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17  If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. (John 13:16-17)

III)   EVEN THOSE IN AUTHORITY ARE TO SERVE THOSE UNDER THEM

A)    HUSBAND / WIFE RELATIONSHIPS (EPH. 5:22-31: HUSBAND IS THE HEAD OF THE WIFE AS CHRIST IS THE CHURCH; HUSBANDS ARE TO LOVE THEIR WIVES AS THEY LOVE THEMSELVES; WIVES ARE TO SUBMIT TO THEIR HUSBANDS.)

B)    PARENT/CHILD RELATIONSHIPS (EPH. 6:1-4:  (PARAPHRASE) CHILDREN ARE TO OBEY AND HONOR THEIR FATHER & MOTHER; FATHERS ARE NOT TO LORD IT OVER AND EXASPERATE THEIR CHILDREN.)

C)    MASTERS / SLAVES (EMPLOYER/EMPLOYEE) RELATIONSHIPS (EPH. 6:-9Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. 9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.)

D)    GOVERNMENT/CITIZEN RELATIONSHIPS (1 PET. 2:13,14 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.

E)    ELDER (PASTOR) MEMBER RELATIONSHIPS (1 PET. 5:1-3 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed:2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers–not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.)

IV)   HOW DO WE DEMONSTRATE SERVANT LEADERSHIP TODAY?

  1. AS SERVANT LEADERS OUR LOYALTY IS TO JESUS CHRIST: WE ARE SERVANTS OF CHRIST TO DO HIS WORK.  WE ARE NOT DOING GOD’S WORK BY BEING AN ENABLER FOR SOMEONE SO THAT THEY CAN CONTINUE TO LIVE AN UNGODLY LIFE. WE STRIVE TO SEE OTHERS AND THEIR “NEEDS” THROUGH OUR LORD’S EYES?  IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL WE CAN HINDER GOD FROM WORKING.
  2. A TRUE SERVANT LEADER DOES NOT DEMAND RECOGNITION.  A SERVANT LEADER DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE THE SPOTLIGHT ON HIM / HER, BUT GIVES OR RENDERS SERVICE WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:  Mat 6:1 “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
  3. A TRUE SERVANT LEADER DOES NOT DEMAND REWARD:  HE / SHE WILL GIVE WITHOUT EXPECTING ANYTHING IN RETURN FROM PEOPLE HE / SHE LEADS AND SERVES. “…DO GOOD, …HOPING FOR NOTHING IN RETURN; AND YOUR REWARD WILL BE GREAT AND YOU WILL BE SONS OF THE MOST HIGH.”  LUKE 6:35B
  4. A TRUE SERVANT LEADER DOES NOT MANIPULATE OR DESIRE TO CONTROL OTHERS:  “GIVING THANKS ALWAYS FOR ALL THINGS TO GOD THE FATHER; IN THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, SUBMITTING TO ONE ANOTHER IN THE FEAR OF GOD.” EPHESIANS 5:20 – 21.
  5. A TRUE SERVANT DOES NOT DEMAND RIGHTS:  GODLY LEADERS HAVE A “YIELDED SPIRIT” BOTH TO GOD AND TO OTHERS AND DOES NOT INSIST ON HIS / HER OWN WAY.  HE OR SHE WILL “YIELD TO OTHERS” AS PAUL WROTE IN ROMANS 12:10 “GIVING PREFERENCE TO ONE ANOTHER”.
  6. SERVANT LEADERS MUST AVOID THE TRAP OF DISCOURAGEMENT AND SELF PITY.  WE LOOK TO GOD FOR OUR REWARD, BOTH IN THIS LIFE AND THE LIFE TO COME: Rev 22:12 “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.
