The Law of Stewardship

THE LAW OF STEWARDSHIP – PUTTING GOD FIRST

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

Corinthians 4:2 (Niv)   MOREOVER it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.   (read 1cOR 4:1-5 KJV)

I.              WE HAVE NOTHING OF OUR OWN.  EVERYTHING WE HAVE BELONGS TO GOD.

A.            EVEN OUR BODIES ARE NOT OUR OWN. (1 COR 6: 19-20)

B.            WE ARE TO MANAGE WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN US ACCORDING TO GOD’S PRIORITIES.  (ROM 11:35 – 36)

C.           WE ARE TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF THE TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US.

II.            TIME: WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE SAY ABOUT TIME MANAGEMENT?

A.            WE ALL GET 24 HOURS IN A DAY.  IT MATTERS TO GOD HOW WE USE OUR TIME.

B.            we are to use our time (LIFE) wisely.  THE BIBLE CALLS THIS REDEEMING THE TIME.  I BELIEVE WE REDEEM THE TIME ON THREE LEVELS:  1ST “WORKING OUT OUR OWN SALVATION WITH FEAR & TREMBLING, 2ND TAKING OUR PLACE IN THE CHURCH, THE BODY OF CHRIST ON EARTH AND 3RD FULLFILLING OUR PLACE IN THE END TIME HARVEST. (COL 4:5, EPH 5:15-16 KJV)

C.           WE ARE TO VIEW YOUR LIFE IN THE CONTEXT OF ETERNITY (PS 39:4, PS 90:12)

D.           PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR TIME MANAGEMENT:

1.            PRIORITIZE:  DEVELOP A MISSION STATEMENT FOR YOUR LIFE AND WRITE OUT YOUR PRIORITIES IN THE LIGHT OF THAT MISSION STATEMENT.  (YOUR PRIORITIES SHOULD SUPPORT YOUR LIFE’S MISSION STATEMENT.)

2.            SCHEDULE YOUR TIME (WISELY):  USE A CALENDAR, DAY TIMER OR PDA.

3.            REDUCE NONCRITICAL COMMITMENTS:  LEARN TO SAY “NO” TO GOOD THINGS THAT ARE NOT CRITICAL TO YOUR LIFE’S MISSION.

4.            DON’T WASTE TIME: KICK THE TV HABIT.  BE VERY SELECTIVE ABOUT THE TV PROGRAMS YOU WATCH.

III.           TALENT – WE ARE ALL GOOD AT SOME THING(S)

A.            WE ARE NOT OUR OWN WE HAVE BEEN BOUGHT WITH A PRICE.

B.            OUR TALENT SHOULD BE USED TO BRING IN SERVICE TO GOD AND TO BRING GLORY TO GOD. (1COR 6:19-20)  (SEE ALSO TEACHING ON TAKING OUR PLACE IN THE CHURCH, THE BODY OF CHRIST. 1COR 12:12-27)

C.           OUR TALENT SHOULD BE INVESTED IN THE KINGDOM WORK. (THE PARABLE OF TALENTS IN MAT 25:14-29 IN THE PARABLE THE TALENT GIVEN TO EACH SERVANT IS A SUM OF MONEY, BUT IT PROBABLY IS SPEAKING OF GOD’S TOTAL INVESTMENT IN US:  OUR LIFE, OUR TALENTS, OUR MONEY AND MORE.

D.           OUR GOD GIVEN TALENT S USUALLY NEEDS TO BE HONED AND DEVELOPED TO ACHIEVE ITS FULL POTENTIAL.  THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IN GALATIANS 5:19 INCLUDES SELF-DISCIPLINE.

IV.          TREASURE – BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES

A.            IT ALL BELONGS TO GOD:  PSALM 50:10, HAG 2:8

B.            THE TITHE (A TENTH) IS TO BE GIVEN TO GOD IN RECOGNITION OF THE FACT THAT THE SOURCE OF ALL. WHEN WE WITHOLD OUR TITHE WE ROB GOD OF WHAT IS DUE HIM.  WHEN WE ROB GOD HE PUTS HOLES IN OUR POCKETS (UNEXPECTED EXPENSES & LOSSES.)  HE COMMANDS US TO PUT HIM TO THE TEST IN THIS MATTER.   MAL 3:8-12

C.           HE SAID HE WOULD REBUKE THE DEVOURER IF WE HONOR HIM WITH OUR TITHES:  Mal 3:11 (kjv) AND I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

D.           TITHING SEEMS TO BE A UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLE THAT PREDATES THE LAW AND THE COMMANDMENTS AND THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD:  HEB 7:1-24  (JACOB SAID HE WOULD GIVE A TENTH TO THE LORD IF THE LORD WOULD BLESS HIM. )

E.            TITHING IS A PRACTICAL AND SCRIPTUAL WAY TO PUT GOD FIRST WITH YOUR MONEY.  (READ TITHING: GOD’S FINANCIAL PLAN PAGE 18 & LAIDLAW TESTIMONY PAGE 22).

F.            THE TREASURE PRINCIPLE:  Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

G.           WE ARE TO GIVE AS GOD HAS PROSPERED US:  1CoR 16:2  Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

H.           THE LAW OF SOWING & REAPING:  2Co 9:6, 7:  Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

I.              GOD EXPECTS US TO TAKE CARE OF THE NEEDS OF OUR FAMILIES AND TO HELP THE POOR AS WE ARE ABLE.

Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the LORD Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the LORD Almighty.

Lev 27:30 “‘A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. 31 If a man redeems any of his tithe, he must add a fifth of the value to it. 32 The entire tithe of the herd and flock–every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod–will be holy to the LORD.
