The Lords Prayer

THE LORD’S PRAYER

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTION –  we are continuing our series on prayer this morning.  last week we spoke about why we should pray.  (review three main points:  when i PRAY 1) god reveals his will to me, 2) god changes me so that i am willing to do his will, and 3) as he changes me, i begin to pray god’s will and my prayers are answered.

I HAVE A FOND MEMORIES AS A CHILD IN GRADE SCHOOL AND LATER AS A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, BEGINNING EACH SCHOOL DAY READING A PASSAGE FROM THE BIBLE, PRAYING THE LORD’S PRAYER AND OFFERING OUR PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG.  WITH THE REINTERPRETATION OF OUR CONSTITUTION REGARDING SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, THIS HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY FROM OUR CHILDREN AND FUTURE GENERATIONS. MATTHEW CHAPTER 6 BEGINS WITH OUR LORD INSTRUCTING HIS DISCIPLES ON THE PRINCIPLES OF PRAYER.  AFTER WHICH JESUS SAID: AFTER this manner therefore pray ye, GIVING US A MODEL PRAYER INCORPORATING THOSE PRINCIPLES.

THE LORD’S PRAYER CONSISTS OF ONLY SEVEN MAIN THOUGHTS NOT COUNTING THE CONCLUDING DOXOLOGY. THE FIRST FOUR FOCUS ON recognizing who god is and identifying with kingdom purpose, THE LAST THREE PETITION GOD to meet OUR PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL NEEDS. THIS MORNING I WOULD LIKE TO REEXAMINE THIS FAMILIAR PRAYER THOUGHT-BY-THOUGHT AND VERSE-BY-VERSE.  This prayer teaches us to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and that all other things shall be added. After the things of God’s glory, kingdom, and will, we pray for the needful supports and comforts of this present life.  TEXT: MATTHEW 6:9 – 13.

II)   Our Father which art in heaven

A)   SPEAKS OF RELATIONSHIP – A VERY SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP – THAT OF A FATHER:  ONE WHO HAS BEGOTTEN US, ONE WHO LOVES US, ONE WHO PROTECTS US, ONE WHO CARES FOR US AND PROVIDES FOR US, ON WHO IS COMMITTED TO OUR WELL BEING, ONE WHO TEACHES AND INSTRUCTS US, ONE WHO DISCIPLINES US WHEN WE GO ASTRAY, BUT ONE IS TOTALLY COMMITTED TO PREPARING US FOR LIFE HERE AND NOW AND US, ETC.

B)   NOT OUR EARTHLY FATHER, BUT OUR FATHER THAT LIVES IN HEAVEN, SO FAR FROM US YET SO NEAR TO US.  HEAVEN IS A PLACE UNLIKE THIS EARTH WHERE GOD’S WILL IS DONE, A PLACE WHERE GOD IS WORSHIPED AND ADORED AND HONORED, A PLACE WHERE HE DWELLS IN ALL HIS GLORY AND MILLIONS OF ANGELS WORSHIP AND OBEY HIM BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS.

C)   NOTICE HE DID NOT SAY “MY fATHER” BUT “OUR FATHER”,  RECOGNIZING THE BROTHERHOOD OF MAN AND THE EMPHASIS GOD PLACES ON THE UNITY OF THE BODY OF CHRIST AND OUR LOVE AND CONCERN FOR ONE ANOTHER.

D)   JESUS SPOKE OF REVERENTLY OF HIS HEAVENLY FATHER.  EVEN THOUGH HE WAS GOD HE TOOK UPON HIMSELF A SERVANT’S HEART AND BECAME OBEDIENT ONTO DEATH, EVEN DEATH ON THE CROSS.   HIS GOD BECAME OUR GOD, HIS FATHER BECECOMES OUR FATHER BECAUSE OF THE SACRIFICE THAT HE MADE.  NOW, THROUGH CHRIST, WE HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF PRAYING TO OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, JUST AS HE DID.  BEFORE WE COME TO CHRIST WE HAVE A DIFFERENT FATHER THAT WE DO NOT WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE:  SEE JOHN 8:44.

III) Hallowed be thy name

A)   THE GREEK SAYS “LET THY NAME BE SANCTIFIED”.

B)   WE ARE TO ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THE FATHER’S NAME IS HOLY AND SACRED. IN O.T. TIMES HIS NAME WAS NOT SPOKEN.  HIS NAME HAD NO VOWELS – IT WAS CONSIDERED SO HOLY THAT IT WAS NOT TO BE SPOKEN ALOUD.

C)   THE 3RD COMMANDMENT TELLS NOT TO TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD OUR GOD IN VAIN.  WE ARE TO INVOKE HIS NAME IN WORSHIP, PRAISE AND ADORATION, IN PRAYERS AND SUPPLICATION.  WE ARE NOT TO USE HIS NAME IN CURSING OR VULGAR LANGUAGE, ETC. THE THIRD COMMANDMENT WARNS US, “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (ExoDUS 20:7)

D)   OUR PRAYER SHOULD BE “LET THY HOLY NAME BE SANCTIFIED IN MY LIFE TODAY.  LET ME BEAR THE SACRED NAME OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER AS CHRIST DID.

IV) Thy kingdom come

A)   IN DANIEL CHAPTER 2 KING Nebuchadnezzar WAS GIVEN A TROUBLING DREAM WHICH THE PROPHET DANIEL INTERPRETED OF SUCCESSIVE KINGDOMS THAT WOULD CONQUEROR ISRAEL BECAUSE OF THEIR REBELLION AND IDOL WORSHIP.  EACH OF THESE POWER KINGDOMS WOULD LAST FOR A TIME AND A SEASON.

B)   Dan 7:13  I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 AND there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

C)   DAVID SPOKE OF HIS KINGDOM WHICH WILL COME TO EARTH IN PsaLM 110 “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

D)   Mat 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…

E)   WE BECOME DISILLUSIONED WITH POLITICS AND DISILLUSIONED WITH.  WE PRAY THAT GOD WILL RAISE UP LEADERS WHO FEAR GOD AND ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO HIM, UNTIL HE COMES TO JUDGE THE NATIONS AND ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM.

F)    Mat 11:12  And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

V)  Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

A)   in the garden of GETHSEMANE, facing the cross, jesus prayed “father if it be possible let this cup pass from me, never-the-less not my will but thine be done”.

B)   WE HAVE SEE THE SIN AND INJUSTICE GOING ON IN THE WORLD AND REALIZE THAT WE CANNOT SAVE OURSELVES; OUR LEADERS CANNOT SAVE US.  then we begin to pray “thy will be done.”

C)   THE ONLY REAL PEACE WILL COME WHEN THE PRINCE OF PEACE COMES TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM IN OUR HEARTS AS WE YIELD TO HIM.

VI)Give us this day our daily bread (VS 11)

A)   WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT GOD IS THE SOURCE OF LIFE, BOTH PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL.  IT IS HE WHO GIVES US STRENGTH AND UNDERSTANDING TO EARN OUR WAGES AND FEED OUR FAMILIES.

B)   IN Mat 6:31 , 33 TELLS HIS CHILDREN TO …take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32  (For after all these things do the GENTILES seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

C)   he concludes this passage Mat 6:33 BUT seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

VII)       forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors (VS 12)

A)   FOLLOWING OUR LORD’S PRAYER HE CONTINUES TO TEACH: “…if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Mat 6:14 – 15)

B)   Mat 5:23, 24 “…if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24  Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

C)   PLAIN AND SIMPLE, IF WE WANT GOD’S FORGIVENESS, WE MUST FORGIVE OTHERS.

VIII)     lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil (13)

A)   WE ALL FACE TEMPTATIONS EVERY DAY.  WE HAVE AN ENEMY THAT SETS TRAPS AND AMBUSHES FOR US.  HE KNOWS OUR WEAKNESSES.

B)   JESUS TAUGHT US TO PRAY:  “LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION.”  GOD KNOWS HOW TO KEEP US FROM TEMPTATION.   IT IS BETTER TO AVOID TEMPTATION THAN TO BE DELIVERED FROM TEMPTATION.

IX)  CONCLUSION – OUR LORD’S PRAYER ENDS WITH THE DOXOLOGY “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, FOREVER Amen.” THAT REMINDS US OF A VERSE IN REVELATION 11:15  “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”  WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HE IS THE ONLY GOD, THE CREATOR OF EVERYTHING, AND THAT JESUS CHRIST, HIS SON IS KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS, AND HE WILL REIGN FOREVER AND EVER.

Eph 2:18  For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
