The New Testament Record of the Holy Spirit Given

THE NEW TESTAMENT RECORD OF THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

 I)     INTRODUCTION – THUS FAR IN OUR SERIES ON THE HOLY SPIRIT WE HAVE PRESENTED 1) THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, 2) THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPRIIT AND 3) THE WONDERFUL WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF THE BELIEVER.   THIS MORNING WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT THE NEW TESTAMENT PATTERN FOR RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH RESPECT TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:  1) DO YOU NECESSARILY RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN YOU ARE SAVED OR BAPTIZED? 2) DO YOU RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT PROGRESSIVELY AS YOU GROW IN THE LORD?  3) IS THERE SPIRITUAL     & PHYSICAL EVIDENCE THAT YOU RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT?  LET’S GO TO THE BOOK OF ACTS WHICH RECORDS THE INITIAL OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRT AND SUBSEQUENT TIMES WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS GIVEN WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE EARLY CHURCH.

II)    THE INITIAL OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (ACTS 2:1-4)

A)   THEY WERE ALREADY BELIEVERS IN CHRIST.  THEY HAD GATHERED TOGHETHER IN OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST’S COMMAND IN ACTS 1:4. And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. THEY HAD NOT YET RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT.

B)   THERE CAME SOUND OF A MIGHTY RUSHING WIND AND TONGUES OF FIRE CAME AND SAT ON EACH OF THEM. THEY WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.

C)   THEY BEGAN TO SPEAK IN OTHER TONGUES / UNLEARNED LANGUAGES AS THE SPIRIT ENABLED THEM.

D)   VISITORS FROM OTHER NATIONS HEARD THEM GLORIFYING GOD IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGES.

E)   SOME THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE CRAZY BUT PETER DELCARED THIS TO BE WHAT THE PROPHET JOEL HAD SPOKEN ABOUT: (ACTS 2:16-21)

F)    WITH RESPECT TO OUR THREE QUESTIONS:

1)    DID THEY RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN THEY FIRST BELIEVED? NO

2)    DID THEY RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT PROGRESSIVELY? NO (AT ONCE)

3)    WAS THERE PHYSICAL EVIDENCE?  YES (H.S. CAME IN AS A RUSHING MIGHTY WIND, CLOVEN TONGUES FOR FIRE REST UPON EACH OF THEM AND THEY SPOKE IN TONGUES)

III)   HOW THE SAMARITAINS RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT (ACTS 8:12-18)

A)   THE SAMARITIANS HAD ACCEPTED THE WORD OF GOD IN RESPONSE TO PHILLIPS PREACHING: (ACTS 8:12, 14)

B)   WHEN THE APOSTLES IN JERUSALEM HEARD THIS THEY SENT PETER AND JOHN TO THEM.  THEY PRAYED FOR THEM THAT THEY MIGHT RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.  NOTE THAT THEY HAD BELIEVED IN JESUS AND ACCEPTED THE GOOD NEWS OF THE GOSPEL AND WERE FILLED WITH JOY BUT THEY HAD NOT RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT.  THE HOLY SPIRIT HAD NOT CAME UPON ANY OF THEM. (ACTS 8:16)

C)   THIS PASSAGE DOES NOT INDICATE THAT THEY SPOKE IN TONGUES AS HAPPENED IN THE INITIAL OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, BUT VERSE 18 DOES SAY THAT SIMON SAW THAT THE SPIRIT WAS GIVEN THROUGH THE LAYING ON OF HANDS.  WHAT DID SIMON SEE?  THERE WAS SOME PHYSICAL EVIDENCE THAT CONVINCED SIMON THAT THE SPIRIT WAS GIVEN THROUGH THE LAYING ON OF HANDS.

D)   WITH RESPECT TO OUR THREE QUESTIONS:

1)    DID THEY RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN THEY FIRST BELIEVED? NO

2)    DID THEY RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT PROGRESSIVELY? NO (AT ONCE)

3)    WAS THERE PHYSICAL EVIDENCE?  YES, BUT WE ARE NOT TOLD WHAT THIS WAS.)

IV)  HOW PAUL WAS CONVERTED AND RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT (ACTS 9:1-17)

A)   IN RESPONSE TO GOD’S COMMAND ANANIAS WENT TO PAUL AND PRAYED FOR PAUL THAT HE MIGHT RECEIVE HIS SIGHT AND BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT.

B)   WE CAN SAFELY ASSUME THAT PAUL ALREADY HAD BELIEVED ON CHRIST.

C)   NOTHING WAS SAID HERE AGAIN ABOUT PAUL SPEAKING IN TONGUES BUT IN CORINTHIANS 14:18  I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all…

D)   WITH RESPECT TO OUR THREE QUESTIONS:

1)    DID PAUL RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN HE FIRST BELIEVED? NO

2)    DID HE RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT PROGRESSIVELY? NO (AT ONCE)

3)    WAS THERE PHYSICAL EVIDENCE?  WE ARE NOT TOLD.

V)   HOW CORNELIUS RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT (ACTS 10:34-46)

A)   GOD HAD GIVEN CORNELIUS A RIGHTEOUS MAN A VISION.

B)   GOD TOLD HIM TO SEND TO JOPPA FOR PETER, WHO WAS STAYING WITH SIMON THE TANNER.

C)   AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME GOD A PETER A VISION AND TOLD HIM THAT THREE MEN WERE LOOKING FOR HIM AND THAT HE SHOULD GO WITH THEM. (ACTS 10:19 – 20)

D)   PETER UNDERSTOOD THAT GOD DOES NOT SHOW FAVORITISM BUT WAS REACHING OUT TO MEN OF EVERY NATION.

E)   PETER PREACHED CHRIST TO THEM AND WHILE HE WAS STILL PREACHING THEY WERE ASTONISHED THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS POURED OUT UPON THEM ALSO FOR THEY HEARD THEM SPEAKING IN TONGUES AND PRAISING GOD.  (ACTS 10:46)

YES (THEY SPOKE IN TONGUES)

VI)  HOW THE EPHESIANS (ABOUT 12 MEN) RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT (ACTS 19:1-6)

A)   PAUL MADE A TRIP TO EPHESUS AND FOUND SOME DISCIPLES (BELIEVERS). EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ALREADY BELIEVERS HE ASKED THEM IF THEY HAD RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN THEY BELIEVED.   (WE CAN INFIR FORM THIS QUESTION THAT PAUL BELIEVED THAT GOD COULD HAVE GIVEN THEM THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN THEY FIRST BELIEVED.  OTHERWISE HE WOULD NOT HAVE ASKED THE QUESTION.)

B)   THEY REPLIED THAT THEY HAD NOT HEARD WHETHER THERE WAS A HOLY SPIRIT.

C)   WITH FURTHER QUESTIONING THEY TOLD PAUL THAT THEY HAD RECEIVED JOHN’S BAPTISM, WHICH PAUL TOLD THEM WAS A BAPTISM OF REPENTENCE.  JOHN WAS THE FORERUNNER OF CHRIST.  HE POINTED PEOPLE TO CHRIST.  THEY HAD REPENTED FOR THEIR SINS AND BELIEVED IN CHRIST.

D)   PAUL LAID HANDS ON THEM AND PRAYED FOR THEM AND THEY RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BEGAN TO SPEAK IN OTHER TONGUES AND PROPHECIED.

E)   WITH RESPECT TO OUR THREE QUESTIONS:

1)    DID THEY RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN THEY FIRST BELIEVED? NO

2)    DID THEY RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT PROGRESSIVELY? NO (AT ONCE)

3)    WAS THERE PHYSICAL EVIDENCE?  YES (THEY SPOKE IN TONGUES)

VII) CONCLUSIONS: 1) We do not receive the Holy Spirit in stages or over extended periods of time, as some would have us believe. We either have or have not received the Holy Spirit. 2) We do not necessarily receive the Holy Spirit when we believe on Christ. Nor do we necessarily receive the Holy Spirit when we are baptized (See Acts 8:16). This is a completely separate experience for those seeking salvation (Acts 2:38). 3) What the New Testament does record is that when people received the Holy Spirit they began to speak in new UNLEARNED languages (TONGUES). This God-given ability stands today as the PRIMARY Bible evidence that the Spirit of God has entered into a man or woman.

Although many have testified to other experiences it is only when the earnest seeker speaks in tongues that we can say with scriptural authority that he has received the Holy Spirit. From that point he is called to walk in the spirit and BEAR THE fruit of THE SPIRIT.  (GALATIANS 5:22-26) apostate ‘Churches’ have opposed this wonderful salvation experience for centuries. Cold powerless tradition has replaced the personal presence of the Lord. All over the world men and women are being filled with the Holy Spirit with the Bible evidence of speaking in a new language. Jesus said “these signs shall follow them that believe … they shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17 KJV).
