The Priesthood of the Believer (part 2)

Priesthood of The Believer (Part 2)

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

1)    INTRODUCTION – LAST WEEK I BEGAN A SERIES ON THE PRIESTHOOD OF THE BELIEVER.  WE SAW (EX. 19:3-10) HOW GOD HAD CALLED ISRAEL TO BE A NATION OF PRIESTS WHEN HE CALLED THEM TO THE HOLY MOUNTAIN WHERE HE MET WITH MOSES.  IT WAS HIS DESIRE TO DRAW THEM AND SEPARATE THEM UNTO HIMSELF AS HIS TREASURED POSSESSION BUT THEY WERE AFRAID AND REFUSED (GEN. 20:18-20).  THEY WANTED MOSES TO HEAR FROM GOD AND TO SPEAK TO GOD IN THEIR BEHALF.  WE ALSO SAW UNDER THE NEW COVENANT ESTABLISHED IN CHRIST (1 PET. 2:9-10) HOW GOD HAS AGAIN CALLED THE CHURCH TO BE A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD AND A HOLY NATION, THE PEOPLE OF GOD.

BUT WHAT DOES THAT THIS MEAN?  HOW DO WE BECOME HIS PRIESTS? WE BECOME HIS PRIESTS BY ACCEPTING CHRISTS AS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, BY RECEIVING THE ANOINTING OF CHRIST (THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT) AND WALKING IN OBEDIENCE TO HIS COMMANDMENTS.  THE NEXT QUESTION IS WHAT ARE WE TO DO AS HIS PRIESTS?  WHAT IS OUR JOB DESCRIPTION? TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION I WOULD LIKE TO LOOK AT OUR TEXT ISAIAH 61:1 – 2.

 2)    THIS PROPHECY IN ISAIAH 61 WAS FULFILLED IN Luke 4:18-22:  JESUS WENT INTO THE TEMPLE AND READ THIS PASSAGE AND DECLARED THAT IT HAD BEEN FULFILLED AT THAT MOMENT IN HISTORY AND THAT THEY HAD WITNESSED IT.

A)   The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me – JESUS WAS FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HE HAS MADE THIS SPIRIT AVAILABLE TO US.  IN ACTS 2:8 THEY WERE TOLD THAT WHEN THE HOLY GHOST COMES UPON YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER TO BE HIS WITNESSES… THAT SAME POWER IS AVAILABLE TODAY TO ALL BELIEVERS.

B)   Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good NEWS (THE GOSPEL) to the poor AND TO THE POOR IN SPIRIT – THOSE THAT ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR NEED OF GOD AND THEIR DEPENDENCY UPON GOD.

C)   He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted – THOSE WHO HEARTS HAVE BEEN BROKEN, WHO WOULD RATHER DIE THAN LIVE, WHO HAVE LOST THEIR SENSE OF SELF-WORTH AND LOST THEIR HOPE.

D)   To proclaim liberty to the captives – THOSE THAT ARE PRISONERS OF SATAN – HE NEVER LETS HIS PRISONERS GO FREE – THEIR TERM NEVER EXPIRES – THOSE THAT ARE TAKEN PRISONER ON EARTH ARE DESTINED TO BE HIS PRISONER FOR ALL ETERNITY – THEY WILL SHARE HIS FATE IN HELL UNLESS JESUS SETS THEM FREE AS HE DID FOR THE MAN OF THE LAND OF GADAREANS WHO HAD BEEN TAKEN HOSTAGE BY DEMONIC SPIRITS.  JESUS SET HIM FREE.

E)   TO PROCLAIM  the opening of the prison to those who are bound – I BELIEVE THAT THIS SPEAKS NOT ONLY THOSE THAT ARE PHYSICALLY BOUND BUT THOSE THAT ARE SPIRITUALLY BOUND.   THOSE THAT ARE ADDICTED TO DRUGS, ALCOHOL, GAMBLING, THOSE WITH EATING DISORDERS AND THOSE WITH SEXUAL ADDITIONS.

F)    To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD (THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR) – I BELIEVE THAT HIS REFERS TO THE DISPENSATION THAT WE ARE LIVING IN WHEN GOD’S MERCY AND FORGIVENESS IS AVAILABLE TO ALL WHO WOULD receive HIM.  GOD IS REACHING OUT TO THE PEOPLES OF THE EARTH AND SAYING “WHOSOEVER WILL MAY COME.”

3)    READ MATT 28:17-20 – HERE JESUS DECLARED THAT ALL AUTHORITY WAS GIVEN TO HIM

A)    THIS MEANS THAT SATAN DOES NOT HAVE ANY AUTHORITY.

B)   JESUS DEMONSTRATED HIS AUTHORITY BY THE MIRACLES THAT HE DID: THE LAME WALKED, THE BLIND RECEIVED THEIR SIGHT, THE DEAD WERE RAISED, MEN & WOMEN FROM DEMON POSSESSION  STORMS WERE CALMED, 5000 MEN PLUS WOMEN AND CHILDREN WERE FED BY 7 LOAFS & 2 SMALL FISHES, ETC.

C)   HE COMMANDED HIS DISCIPLES TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS:

a)    BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT,

b)   TEACHING THEM TO OBEY EVERYTHING THAT HE COMMANDED.

D)   HE PROMISED TO BE WITH THEM ALWAYS TO THE END OF THE AGE.

E)   NOTICE THAT HE COMMANDED HIS DISCIPLES TO MAKE DISCIPLES AND TO BE WITH THEM TO THE END OF THE AGE (THE AGE OF THE CHURCH THAT WE NOW LIVE IN).

F)    CLEARLY HIS AUTHORITY AND POWER CONTINUE TO ENABLE AND EMPOWER HIS DISCIPLES UNTIL THE END OF THE AGE.

G)   FUTURE GENERATIONS OF DISCIPLES ARE CONTINUE TO DO THESE SAME WORKS UNDER HIS AUTHORITY.

4)    MARK 16:15-20 MAKES THIS EVEN CLEARER

A)   Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; he that believeth not shall be damned.

B)   these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;

C)   they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

D)    They went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.

5)    CONCLUSION – THE WORLD AND ALL CREATION IS WAITING FOR THE MANIFESTATION OF THE SONS OF GOD (THE PRIESTS OF GOD) TO BE REVEALED Rom 8:18-22

A)   the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the GLORY, WHICH shall be revealed in us. For the earn est expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the sons of God TO BE REVEALED.

B)   GOD WOULD NOT ASK US TO DO THESE THINGS UNLESS HE MADE PROVISION FOR US TO DO THEM.

C)   THE SAME HOLY SPIRIT, WHICH FILLED AND EMPOWERED JESUS CHRIST IS AVAILABLE TO US TO DAY TO ENABLE US TO CONTINUE TO DO HIS WORK.

D)   Acts 1:8 “ you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” NIV

Isa 61:1-4

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me,

Because the LORD has anointed Me

To preach good tidings to the poor;

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives,

And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,

And the day of vengeance of our God;

To comfort all who mourn,

3 To console those who mourn in Zion,

To give them beauty for ashes,

The oil of joy for mourning,

The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;

That they may be called trees of righteousness,

The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”

4 And they shall rebuild the old ruins,

They shall raise up the former desolations,

And they shall repair the ruined cities,

The desolations of many generations.

NKJV

Luke 4:18-22

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor: He hath sent me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down: and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, To-day hath this scripture been fulfilled in your ears.

22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the words of grace which proceeded out of his mouth: and they said, Is not this Joseph’s son? ASV

Mark 16:15-20

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. KJV

Matt 28:17-20

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

NIV

Matt 17:14-20

14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

17 “O unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

NIV

Rom 8:18-24

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved.
