The River of God

THE RIVER OF GOD

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)  INTRODUCTION:  THE BOOK OF EZEKIEL RECORDS A NUMBER OF VISIONS GIVEN TO THE PROPHET EZEKIEL.   MANY OF THESE WERE PROPHETIC IN NATURE, SPEAKING OF THE FAR DISTANT FUTURE.   IN EZEKIEL CHAPTER 47 GOD GAVE EZEKIEL A VISION OF A RIVER.   AS YOU READ ABOUT THIS RIVER YOU WILL REALIZE THAT THIS WAS NO ORDINARY RIVER.    (TEXT EZEKIEL 47:1 – 12)  (ISAIAH 35:1-7)

II)                 THE RIVER FLOWS FROM THE ENTRANCE OF THE TEMPLE

A)         TEMPLE IS A PLACE WHERE THE PRESENCE OF GOD DWELLS

B)          UNDER THE OLD COVENANT IT BEGAN WITH THE TABERNACLE AND THEN THE TEMPLE BUILD BY KING SOLOMON USING THE PROVISIONS GATHERED BY KING DAVID THE GREATEST KING OF ISRAEL

C)          UNDER THE NEW COVENANT WE HAVE BECOME THE TEMPLE OF GOD:

1)      1 Cor. 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

2)      John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

III)              THE RIVER FLOWED EASTWARD INTO THE DESERT ARABAH

A)         ARABAH IS A BARREN, DESERT LAND WHERE NOTHING LIVES

B)          MUCH OF OUR SOCIETY IS BARREN AND SPIRITUALLY DEAD, NEITHER ACKNOWLEDGING GOD NOR FEELING THE TOUCH OF HIS PRESENCE

C)          WHERE THE WATER EMPTIES IN TO THE SEA IT BECAME FRESH

1)      SWARMS OF LIVING CREATURES WERE NURTURED AND LIVED THERE

2)      SWARMS OF FISH LIVED THERE AND DREW FISHERMEN

3)      FRUIT TREES OF ALL KINDS GREW ALONG THE BANKS –  NEITHER THE LEAVES NOR THE FRUIT WITHERED, BUT EVERY MONTH THEY WOULD BEAR FRUIT BECAUSE OF THE WATER

IV)              JESUS TOLD THE WOMEN AT THE WELL THAT HE WOULD GIVE HER WATER SUCH THAT SHE WOULD NEVER THIRST AGAIN – LIVING WATER

A)         THE SOURCE OF WATER THAT JESUS SPOKE OF IS THE SAME SOURCE THAT CAUSES THE WATER SYMBOLIZING THE HOLY SPIRIT TO SPRING FROTH FROM OUR INNERMOST BEING.

B)          IT BRINGS LIFE TO US AND TO ALL WHO ARE TOUCHED BY IT.

C)          AS CHOSEN VESSELS OF GOD WE BEAR THAT LIVING WATER.

V)                THE RIVER OF GOD SO DEEP AND SO WIDE THAT IT CANNOT BE CROSSED

A)         THE MAN MEASURED OUT A 1000 CUBITS AND THE RIVER WAS ANKLE-DEEP

B)          THE MAN MEASURED OUT ANOTHER 1000 CUBITS AND THE RIVER WAS KNEE-DEEP

C)          THE MAN MEASURED OUT ANOTHER 1000 CUBITS AND THE RIVER WAS UP TO HIS WAIST

D)         THE MAN MEASURED OUT ANOTHER 1000 CUBITS AND IT WAS A MIGHTY RIVER TO SWIM IN, A RIVER THAT NO MAN COULD CROSS

E)          IT MUST BE OBVIOUS TO YOU THAT THIS WAS A SPIRITUAL VISION OF THE RIVER OF GOD.  I BELIEVE IT SPEAKS OF A PROGRESSIVE WALK OF THE SPIRIT INTO GOD.

1)      MOST OF US DO NOT REALLY KNOW GOD NOR UNDERSTAND HIS WAYS

2)      IT IS HIS DESIRE FOR US TO KNOW HIM

3)      WE INSTEAD ARE SATISFIED TO WADE ALONG THE SHORE

4)      GOD WANTS US TO GET OUT INTO THE DEPTH OF HIMSELF WHERE WE SWIM BY FAITH INSTEAD OF OUR HUMAN WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING

5)      IF WE WANT TO BE USED OF GOD; IF WE WANT TO SEE HIS GLORY; IF WE WANT TO EXPERIENCE HIM WE MUST GO INTO HIS DEPTHS.

6)      DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART, SPOKE OF “DEEP CALLING ONTO DEEP”, THE DEEP IN GOD CALLING TO THE DEEP IN US.

VI)              THE BOOK OF ISAIAH SPEAKS OF THE THAT RIVER (ISAIAH 35:3-8)

A)         IT WILL SPRING FORTH WHEN JESUS RETURNS

B)          IT WILL STREAMS IN THE DESERT CAUSING THE DESERT TO COME TO LIFE

C)          IT WILL BRING HEALING TO THE PEOPLES

D)         IT WILL BE CALLED A HIGHWAY OF HOLINESS

E)          THE UNCLEAN WILL NOT BE TRAVELING IN IT

VII)           THE BOOK OF REVELATION SPEAKS OF THE RIVER OF GOD (REV.  22:1-4)

A)         IT FLOWS FROM THE THRONE OF GOD AND FROM THE LAMB INTO THE CITY OF GOD

B)          THERE ALSO THERE ALL KINDS OF FRUIT TREES LINING THE RIVER FLOWING FORTH FROM THE THRONE OF GOD

C)          ITS LEAVES ARE FOR THE HEALING OF THE NATIONS

D)         THERE WILL BE NO CURSE OF SIN IN THAT CITY

E)          GOD AND HIS LAMB (JESUS CHRIST) HIS SON WILL BE IN THE CITY

F)           HIS SERVANTS WILL SERVE HIM AND THEY WILL HAVE HIS NAME WRITTEN ON THEIR FOREHEADS

G)         THERE WILL BE NO NIGHT AND GOD HIMSELF WILL BE LIGHT OF HIS CITY

VIII)       PSALMS 46:4 – 6 [There is] a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy [place] of the tabernacles of the most High.  5 God [is] in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, [and that] right early. 6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
