The Road to Emmaus

THE ROAD TO EMMAUS

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)INTRO – IN LUKE 24:13 WE ARE TOLD OF TWO MEN, CLEOPAS AND A FRIEND, STRUGGLING BELIEVERS, TRAVELING FROM JERUSALEM TO EMMAUS AFTER CHRIST WAS CRUCIFIED.  THE BODY OF CHRIST WAS MISSING. THEY WERE CONFUSED, TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF IT ALL.   WE HAVE ALL TRAVELED THE ROAD TO EMMAUS.  IT IS A JOURNEY FILLED WITH DOUBTS AND FEARS AND DISAPPOINTMENT.   WE THINK THAT GOD HAS FAILED US, DESERTED US…  WE WERE SO EXPECTING GOD TO DO SOMETHING GREAT… TEXT: LUKE 24:13 – 33 (NKJV)

E)     HE WAS A GREAT PROPHET, TEACHER, HEALER.

F)     HIS WORDS WERE CONFIRMED WITH MIRACLES.

G)    THEY THOUGHT HE WAS ISRAEL’S DELIVERER.

H)    HE PATIENTLY LISTENED TO ALL THEY HAD TO SAY.

III)    2ND JESUS REVEALED HIS PURPOSE (VS 25 – 27)

A)     GOD’S PLAN & PURPOSE OF CHRIST’S COMING.

B)     “OUGHT NOT CHRIST TO HAVE SUFFERED?”

E)     THEY BEGGED HIM TO STAY – THEIR HEARTS “BURNING WITHIN THEM”.

IV)    3RD JESUS REVEALED HIS PERSON (VS 28 – 33)

A)     JESUS SAW THEIR PASSION AND HE REVEALE HIS PERSON: “HE THAT HUNGERS AND THIRSTS FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS SHALL BE FILLED…”.

D)    THEY BELIEVED ON HIM; THEY RECEIVED HIM JOYOUSLY.

V)             CONCLUSION – THEY WENT BACK TO JERUSALEM VERY DIFFERENT FROM WHEN THEY LEFT.  THEY WENT BACK FILLED WITH HOPE, FILLED WITH PURPOSE, ANXIOUS TO TELL SOMEONE.  THEY RETURNED TO TELL HIS DISCIPLES AND THOSE WITH THEM.  AS THEY WERE THERE TOGETHER JESUS APPEARED IN THE MIDST OF THEM.   JESUS SAID TO THEM “…. Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 AND that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 AND ye are witnesses of these things. 49 AND, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
