The Work of the Holy Spirit (part 1)

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (PART 1)

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)  INTRODUCTION – THIS IS THE THIRD MESSAGE IN MY SERIES ON THE HOLY SPIRIT:  WE FIRST TALKED ABOUT THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. NEXT WE SPOKE OF THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.  THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A DIVINE PERSON, SEPARATE AND DISTINCT FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON.  WE WITNESS THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT ALL PRESENT WHEN JESUS WAS BAPTIZED.  (LUKE 3:21 & 22).  TODAY WE BEGIN TO TALK ABOUT THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.   WHY WAS HE SENT TO US?   WHAT DOES HE DO FOR US?

II)  THE HOLY SPIRIT IS SEAL OF GOD’S OWNERSHIP & A DEPOSIT GUARANTEEING THE FULFILLMENT OF GOD’S PROMISES TO US

A)      Eph 1:11- 14:  In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.

B)       2 Cor. 1:21-22: (Amplified Bible)21But it is God Who confirms and makes us steadfast and establishes us [in joint fellowship] with you in Christ, and has consecrated and anointed us [[a]enduing us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit];  22[He has also appropriated and acknowledged us as His by] putting His seal upon us and giving us His [Holy] Spirit in our hearts as the security deposit and guarantee [of the fulfillment of His promise].

C)      Eph 4:30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

D)      GOD’S PROMISES TO US ARE MADE GOOD IN CHRIST.  HE HAS GIVEN US THE HOLY SPIRIT, PLACED HIS SEAL OF OWNERSHIP UPON US GUARANTEEING WHAT HE HAS PROMISED US WILL COME TO PASS.  WE ARE SEALED US ONTO THE DAY OF OUR REDEMPTION.

III)           THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH  (THE COUNSELOR & THE COMFORTER) (JOHN  14:15 – 18; 14:25-26, 15:26 NIV)

A)       JESUS WOULD NOT LEAVE US AS ORPHANS BUT WOULD ASK THE FATHER (GOD) TO SEND US THE COMFORTER, HIS HOLY SPIRIT.

B)       THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL TESTIFY AND CONFIRM THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS CHRIST THAT THROUGH CHRIST WE HAVE BEEN ADOPTED INTO GOD’S FAMILY, WE ARE HIS CHILDREN, HEIRS AND JOINT HEIRS WITH CHRIST.

C)      JESUS TOLD THEM THIS TO COMFORT THEM SO THAT WHEN THEY WERE PERSECUTED THEY WOULD REMAIN STEADFAST.

D)      THE HOLY SPIRIT COMFORTS US AND COUNSELS US IN OUR TIMES OF DISTRESS.  IF GOD IS FOR US WHO CAN BE AGAINST US! (ROM 8:31b)

IV)          THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS (REPROVES & CONVINCES)  THE WORLD OF SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUDGEMENT (JOHN 16: 5 – 11)

A)       THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL EXPOSE SIN AND UNBELIEF IN ORDER TO AWAKEN A CONSCIOUSNESS OF GUILT AND THE NEED TO RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS.

B)       THE HOLY SPIRIT REVEALS THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST WHO GOD RAISED FROM THE DEAD…RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT HE HAS MADE AVAILABLE TO US THROUGH HIS DEATH.

C)      FINALLY, THE HOLY SPIRIT REVEALS THE TERRIBLE JUDGEMENT THA IS RESERVED TO THOSE WHO UNBELIEF FAIL TO RECEIVE GOD’S GIFT OF SALVATION AND ETERNAL LIFE THROUGH CHRIST.

D)      WHEN JESUS SUFFERED AND DIED ON THE CROSS WE MIGHT THINK THAT JESUS WAS JUDGED,.  IN RAISING CHRIST FROM THE DEAD THE FATHER MADE IT PLAIN THAT JESUS WAS NOT JUDGED BUT THAT THE PRINCE OF THIS WORLD WAS JUDGED.   JESUS, THE SECOND ADAM CAME TO RECLAIM WHAT THE FIRST ADAM HAD GIVEN AWAY, PRIMARILY HIS POWER AND DOMINION OVER GOD’S CREATION.

E)       2 Timothy 4:2 -4 (Amplified Bibl) : 2Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], whether the opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching.   3For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying], they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold,  4And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions.

V)           CONCLUSION – THE HOLY SPIRIT QUICKENS US (REVIVES, RENEWS AND STIMULATES GROWTH IN OUR SPIRITUAL LIFE)

A)        (JOHN 6:61 – 63 NIV)

1)    THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES, NUTURES & SUSTAINS OUR SPIRITUAL LIFE; THE FLESH LIFE WILL END “FLESH AND BLOOD WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD” (1COR 15:50).

2)    WE MUST INGEST HIS FLESH, THE WORD (“THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US…”

3)    WE DRINK DEEPLY OF THE WELLS OF SALVATION, HIS SHED BLOOD BRINGS US SALVATION AND REDEMPTION AND ETERNAL LIFE.

4)    WE MUST BELIEVE AND OBEY THE WORDS OF CHRIST TO RECEIVE THE QUICKENING OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE

B)       (ROMANS 8:10 – 14)

1)    OUR SPIRIT IS QUICKENED (MADE ALIVE) BECAUSE OF HIS (JESUS CHRIST’S) RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT IS IMPUTED TO US.

2)    WE ARE NOT INDEBTED, NOR  DO WE REGARD THE FLESH, BUT THE SPIRIT OF GOD WHO IS THE SOURCE AND SUSTAINER OF OUR NEW LIFE IN CHRIST!   WITHOUT HIS DRAWING AND CONVICTION PRIOR TO OUR SALVATION AND HIS NURTURING, HIS COUNSEL, HIS COMFORT AND HIS SANCTIFYING POWER WE WOULD BE LOST AND WITHOUT HOPE.

3)    HIS SPIRIT WILL QUICKEN AND RESTORE OUR SPIRIT LIFE, ENABLING US TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON.
