Walking in the Spirit (part 2)

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT – PART 2

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTION – THIS IS THE SECOND IN A SERIES OF MESSAGES ON WALKING IN THE SPIRIT.   LAST WEEK WE LEARNED THAT WALKING IN THE SPIRIT MEANS LIVING OUT OUR DAY TO DAY LIFE, LISTENING TO AND BEING DIRECTED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD WHICH IS WITHIN EVERY CHILD OF GOD. WE ALSO LEARNED THAT GOD HAS MADE A DEPOSIT OF HIS HOLY SPIRIT INTO EACH OF HIS CHILDREN AND EVEN SET HIS SEAL OF OWNERSHIP ON US GUARANTEEING THE OUTCOME:   PAUL SPEAKING TO THE CHURCH OF PHILIPPI SAID:  Phil 1:4-6: In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. NIV THE ONLY THING THAT WILL PREVENT THAT GOOD OUTCOME IS THAT WE AND REFUSE TO LISTEN TO AND FOLLOW HIM AND GIVEN INTO OUR OWN CARNAL (SINFUL) DESIRES. TODAY I WANT TO BEGIN TO LOOK AT ROMANS CHAPTER 8 WHICH IS DEFINITIVE CHAPTER IN SCRIPTURE RELATING TO LIFE IN THE SPIRIT.   ROMANS CHAPTER 8 SHOULD BE STUDIED IN CONTEXT WITH ROMANS CHAPTERS 5, 6 & 7.   THESE CHAPTERS DISCUSS THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW AND THE UTTER FUTILITY OF TRYING TO LIVE UP TO GOD’S LAW IN OUR SINFUL NATURE:

A)   WE ARE JUSTIFIED BY FAITH IN CHRIST (AS OPPOSED TO WORKS): Rom 5:1-2: Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. NIV

B)   THE LAW BROUGHT US THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN (SIN WAS NOT IMPUTED OR ACCOUNTED FOR BEFORE THE LAW WAS GIVEN)

a)    Rom 5:20-21: The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. NIV

b)    Rom 5:13-14: …for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, NIV

c)    Rom 7:7: What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. NIV

C)   Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?

a)    Rom 6:1-4: What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. NIV

b)    Rom 6:11: …count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life… NIV

c)    Rom 6:15-18: What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey-whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? NIV

D)   SUMMING IT ALL UP:

a)    Rom 7:14-18: We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. NIV

b)    Rom 7:21-25: So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. NIV

c)    IN CHAPTERS 5 – 7 PAUL HAS SHOWN THAT LIFE WITHOUT THE GRACE OF CHRIST IS DEFEAT, MISERY AND BONDAGE TO SIN.  I BELIEVE THAT ROMANS 7 SPEAKS NOT ONLY OF THE PLIGHT OF THE SINNER WHO TRIES TO LIVE UP TO THE LAW OF GOD WITHOUT THE GRACE OF GOD REVEALED IN CHRIST BUT ALSO THE PLIGHT OF THE CARNAL CHRISTIAN WHO WANTS TO GET INTO HEAVEN BY THE SKIN OF HIS TEETH.  HE WANTS TO BE SPARED FROM THE WRATH OF GOD BUT HE CONTINUALLY GIVES INTO AND FOLLOWS HIS OLD SINFUL NATURE. PERHAPS HOPING TO ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF SIN WITHOUT ITS CONSEQUENCES.  THIS INDIVIDUAL IS DECEIVED… THE WAGES OF SIN IS SPIRITUAL DEATH TO THOSE WHO CONTINUE TO PRACTICE SIN.

II) THE PRIMARY AND NECESSARY EVIDENCE OF WALKING IN THE SPIRIT (OR WITH THE SPIRIT) OF GOD IS THAT WE WILL BEAR THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT.

A)      THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS WHAT DISTINGUISHES US FROM THE WORLD AND GIVES PRIMARY EVIDENCE OF THE NATURE OF GOD IN BELIEVERS, EVIDENCE THAT WE ARE CHRISTIANS, FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST:  Gal 5:22 – 23: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. NIV

B)      THESE STAND IN STARK CONTRAST TO THE FRUIT OF THE SINFUL UNGODLY NATURE WITH WHICH WE WERE BORN: Gal 5:19-21: The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. NIV

C)      Gal 5:23-26: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. NIV

D)      PAUL WARNED THE CHURCH OF GALATIA AND US THAT THOSE WHO BEAR THE FRUIT OF THE SINFUL NATURE WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. (GAL 5:21)

III)           NEXT WEEK WE WILL LOOK AT ROMANS CHAPTER 8, WHICH IS THE DEFINITIVE CHAPTER ON OUR LIFE IN THE SPIRIT.  ROMANS CHAPTER 8 BEGINS: Rom 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus  (NIV)
