Walking in the Spirit (part 3)

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT – PART 3

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

I)     INTRODUCTION – THIS IS THE THIRD IN A SERIES OF MESSAGES ON WALKING IN THE SPIRIT.  IN PREPARATION FOR TODAY’S MESSAGE, WHICH IS IN ROMANS CHAPTER 8, WE REVIEWED ROMANS CHAPTERS 5, 6 & 7. THESE CHAPTERS DISCUSS THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW AND THE UTTER FUTILITY OF TRYING TO LIVE UP TO GOD’S LAW IN OUR SINFUL NATURE.  SOME OF THE MAJOR POINTS OF THE FIRST TWO INSTALLMENTS WERE:

  • WE ARE JUSTIFIED BY FAITH IN CHRIST (AS OPPOSED TO OUR WORKS): Rom 5:1-2
  • THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW WAS TO BRING US THE KNOWLEDGE OR AWARENESS OF OUR SINFULNESS:  Rom 5:20-21, 5:13-14, 7:7
  • GOD HAS MADE A DEPOSIT OF HIS HOLY SPIRIT INTO EACH OF HIS CHILDREN AND SET HIS SEAL OF OWNERSHIP ON US GUARANTEEING THE FINAL OUTCOME IF WE CONTINUE TO SUBMIT HIS WILL AND PURPOSE.
  • WE ARE NOT TO CONTINUE TO sin EVEN THOUGH WE ARE LIVING UNDER GOD’S GRACE. Rom 6:1-4, 6:11, 6:15-18:
  • THE PRIMARY AND NECCESSARY EVIDENCE OF WALKING IN THE SPIRIT (OR WITH THE SPIRIT) OF GOD IS THAT WE WILL BEAR THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT.  GAL 5:22-23.
  • WALKING IN THE SPIRIT MEANS LIVING OUT OUR DAY-TO-DAY LIFE, LISTENING TO AND BEING DIRECTED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD, WHICH IS WITHIN US.

TODAY WE ARE GOING TO FURTHER EXAMINE THE ESSENTIAL NATURE OF LIFE IN THE SPIRIT.  (TEXT FOR TODAY ROMANS 8:1 – 17)

II)    when we walk in the spirit of god we are free from condemnation (VS 1 – 4)

A)   Roman Chapter 8 begins “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit – added in KJV)

B)   THIS IS PAUL CRY OF EMANCIPATION FROM THE GUILT AND CONDEMNATION OF SIN EXPRESSED IN ROMANS 7:18 & 19.

C)   THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS HAVE BEGAN A NEW LIFE IN THE SPIRIT OF GOD CHARACTERIZED BY CONTINUING FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD THROUGH THE AGENCY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

D)   WE ARE FREE FROM CONDEMNATION, GUILT OF OUR PAST SINS AS WE CONTINUE TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT, UNDER GOD’S DIRECTION AND GUIDANCE..

E)   THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE HAS SET US FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.  A COMPARISION, A CONTRAST IS GIVEN OF THE RELATIVE MERITS OF the LAW ESTABLISHED BY THE OLD COVENANT AND THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE ESTABLISHED BY THE NEW COVENANT.

F)     THE OLD LAW WAS REVEALED OUR SINFUL NATURE BUT IT WAS POWERLESS TO CHANGE IT.  WE WERE POWERLESS TO HELP OURSELVES ONLY GOD COULD HELP US AND THAT IS WHAT HE DID.

G)   HE (GOD) CONDEMNED SIN IN THE FLESH BY SENDING HIS SON AS A SIN OFFERING SO THAT THE RIGHTEOUS REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW MIGHT BE SATISIFIED IN US WHO CHOSE NO LONGER TO LIVE ACCORDING TO THE SINFUL NATURE BUT ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT.

III)   we must win the battle of the mind to overcome sin (VS 5 – 7)

A)    WE SIN BECAUSE THEY HAVE SET OUR MINDS AND AFFECTIONS ON THE DESIRES OF OUR OLD NATURE – WE INDULGE OUR OLD NATURE.

B)    THOSE WHO LIVE ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT OF GOD HAVE SET THEIR MINDS AND AFFECTIONS ON WHAT THE SPIRIT DESIRES.  (VS 5)

C)   IF OUR MIND IS SET UPON THE DESIRES OF OUR SINFUL NATURE WE WILL DIE.

D)   IF THE SPIRIT OF GOD CONTROLS OUR MIND – WE HAVE LIFE AND PEACE.   THE PEACE OF GOD THAT PASSES ALL HUMAN UNDERSTANDING.

E)   THE SINFUL MIND DOES NOT SUBMIT TO GOD’S LAW.  INDEED IT CANNOT SUBMIT TO GOD’S LAW ANY MORE THAN SATAN CAN SUBMIT TO GOD LAW.  IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

IV)  WE ARE NO LONGER A SLAVE TO OUR SIN – WE HAVE A CHOICE (VS 9 – 11)

A)   WE HAVE ALSO BEEN SET FREE FROM THE BONDAGE AND DEATH GRIP OF SIN.  THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE HAS SET US FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.

B)   OUR PREDISPOSITION IN THIS NEW LIFE IS TO FOLLOW THE LEADING OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD, BUT WE CAN STILL CHOSE TO SIN. OUR CHOICE MAY INCLUDE THE CHOICE TO DO WRONG EVEN THOUGH IT IS INCONSISTENT AND OUT OF CHARACTER WITH OUR NEW NATURE.

C)    THIS IS DIFFERENT, AND FAR BETTER THAN BEFORE WE CAME TO CHRIST.   BEFORE WE CAME TO CHRIST WE LIVED UNDER THE CONDEMNATION OF THE LAW.  WE SINNED AGAINST GOD WHETHER WE WANTED TO OR NOT.  WE DID NOT HAVE A CHOICE; IT WAS OUR NATURE TO SIN.  NOW GOD HAS GIVEN US HIS SPIRIT AND WE HAVE A CHOICE.

V)   THOSE WHO ARE LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD ARE THE SONS OF GOD (12 – 17)

A)   THE SPIRIT OF GOD TESTIFIES WITH OUR SPIRIT THAT WE ARE HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS.

B)   WE ARE HIS CHILDREN: HEIRS OF GOD AND CO-HEIRS WITH CHRIST.

C)   WE HAVE NO OBLIGATION TO OUR SINFUL NATURE.  WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO LIVE AS HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS.   THE WORLD HAS A RIGHT TO EXPECT CHILDREN OF THE KING TO LIVE LIKE CHILDREN OF THE KING.

a)    Rom 8:22-23: We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. NIV

b)    Rom 8:19-20: The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. NIV

D)   THERE IS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE NATURAL TENSION IN THE LIFE OF A CHRISTIAN:  WE ARE IN THE WORLD BUT WE ARE NOT OF THE WORLD.  WE WILL SUFFER FOR HIM AS A RESULT OF THIS CONFLICT.  IF WE SHARE HIS SUFFERINGS WE WILL SHARE IN HIS GLORY AND IN HIS KINGDOM.  Rom 8:18: “…our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” NIV

E)   GOD IS NOT PASSIVELY STANDING BY TO SEE IF WE CAN MAKE IT, BUT HE IS WORKING ACTIVELY WITHIN US TO GUARANTEE THAT WE MAKE IT: Rom 8:26-27: The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. NIV
