Who Is Jesus Christ

WHO IS JESUS CHRIST?

(Pastor Lee Jackson – FFWC)

1)    INTRODUCTION – IN MATTHEW 16:13 – 19.  JESUS ASKS TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS A THIRD QUESTION THAT WAS NOT ASKED.   THESE QUESTIONS ARE:  WHO DOES THE WORLD SAY THAT JESUS IS?,   WHO DO WE SAY THAT HE IS?,  AND WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?  (READ TEXT)

2)    WHO DOES THE WORLD SAY I AM?

A)   IN PETER’S DAY

a)    SOME SAID JOHN THE BAPTIST – THE ONE WHO IRONICALLY WOULD NEVER EVEN CONSIDER COMPARING HIMSELF TO JESUS CHRIST.  “HE MUST INCREASE BUT I MUST DECREASE.”  WHEN JESUS PASSED BY HE SAID OF JESUS “BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD THAT TAKES AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD.

b)    SOME SAID ELIJAH – THE PROPHET THAT WAS TAKEN UP INTO HEAVEN ON CHARIOTS AND HORSES OF FIRE.

c)    OTHERS JEREMIAH OR ONE OF THE PROPHETS – THE PROPHET JEREMIAH SPOKE OF A NEW COVENANT THAT WOULD BE ESTABLISHED WITH ISRAEL IN JERIMIAH 31:33.   THIS COVENANT WAS ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE LIFE, DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST THE MESSIAH OF THE JEWS.

3)    WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?

A)   PETER’S RESPONSE: “YOU ARE THE CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD.”  LIVING AS OPPOSED TO THE GODS MADE BY HUMAN HANDS THAT HAVE NO LIFE IN THEM.

B)    “Mat 16:17  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar (SON OF) jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

4)    WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE WITH RESPECT TO THEIR ROLE IN THE CHURCH?

A)   Mat 16:18  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter (lITTLE STONE) , and upon this rock (MASSIVE ROCK) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.   GATES REFER TO THE PLACE IN THE CITIES AND TOWNS WHERE THE DECISIONS ARE HANDED DOWN.

B)   VERSE 18 HEARKENS BACK TO Isa 28:16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.

C)   Mat 16:19  And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

a)   KEYS TO THE KINGDOM HERE REFER TO THE UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST AND THE BIRTH OF THE SPIRITUAL CHURCH AND CHRIST’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHURCH.

b)   LOOSING AND BINDING IN JEWISH LAW REFERS TO THAT WHICH IS PERMITTED AND THAT WHICH IS FORBIDDEN.  HERE JESUS WAS ESTABLISHING PETER AND THE APOSTLES DELEGATED AUTHORITY OVER WHAT WAS TO BE PERMITTED AND WHAT WAS TO FORBIDDEN IN THE CHURCH.

c)   JESUS HAD THIS DISCUSSION TO PREPARE THEM FOR HIS DEATH – HE WOULD NOT ESTABLISH AN EARTHLY KINGDOM – HE CAME TO DIE FOR THE SINS OF MAN AND NOTHING WOULD DETER HIM FROM THAT MISSION.  (VERSES 21 – 23)

5)    WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES OUR HEART FELT CONFESSION OF CHRIST MAKE TO US INDIVIDUALLY? (VS 24 – 27)

A)   WE WILL BE ABLE TO DENY OURSELVES AND TAKE UP OUR CROSS AND FOLLOW HIM ONLY IF WE HAVE RESOLVED THAT HE IS THE CHRIST, THE ANOINTED ONE, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD, AND

B)   ONLY IN LOSING OUR LIFE IN HIM WILL WE FIND LIFE WE ARE LOOKING FOR, AND

C)   ONLY IN LOSING THIS WORLD WILL WE GAIN THE KINGDOM OF GOD BECAUSE WE HAVE BELIEVED ON HIM, AND

D)   ONLY IN BECOMING HIS DISCIPLES WILL WE ANTIPATE HIS COMING AND RECEIVE OUR REWARD.

E)   READ 1 PETER 2:4 – 8

 6)    CONCLUSION – I BELIEVE THAT JESUS WOULD IS ASKING EACH OF US THIS SAME QUESTION TODAY, AS HE ASKED PETER:  “WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?”  IS HE YOU SAVIOR?  IS HE THE ROCK ON WHICH YOU STAND – THE CORNERSTONE OF YOUR LIFE? OR IS HE THE ROCK UPON WHICH YOU WILL BE CRUSHED?  WILL YOU FALL UPON THE ROCK OR WILL IT FALL ON YOU?  IS HE YOUR LORD AND MASTER OR ARE YOU JUST ONE OF THE CROWD?  WHAT DO YOU SAY THIS MORNING WHEN HE ASKS: WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?  WHAT SAY YE?

OTHER RELATED SCRIPTURES:

Mat 11:13  For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

Mat 11:14  And if ye will receive it, this is Elijah, which was for to come.

1Pe 2:6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

1Pe 2:7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,”

1Pe 2:8 and, “A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message–which is also what they were destined for.

1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1Pe 2:10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
